The Boomers future competition

We all know that the USA is the biggest threat but is Team Canada the sleeping giant that is finally awakening. The following have committed to the full three year program for the Olympics. That is those who will train together and play together over three years toward the Olympics. This removes the two biggest weaknesses of Team Canada- lack of commitment and lack of chemistry.

RJ Barrett
Dillon Brooks
Luguentz Dort
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Cory Joseph
Jamal Murray
Kelly Olynyk
Dwight Powell

Side note: Nick Nurse is the coach and Andrew Wiggins is considering joining Olympics if they qualify.

Who might be one of the other biggest threats outside of USA though?

Let's look at France:

Nicolas Batum
Evan Fournier
Luwawu-Cabarrot
Frank Ntilikina
Gobert
Victor Wembanyama
Joel Embiid

You would have to say most of these are a lock to play except for the wildcards of Embiid and Wembanyama.

So with or without the wildcards of superstars in these teams, the Boomers might well have one of their strongest squads at the wrong time. Anything is possible in international competition but France, USA and Canada will be powerhouses.

Where do you think they rank if all committed, who do you have winning it all?

While they did slip up in not qualifying for the Olympics, Greece (w/ Giannis) and Serbia (especially w/ Jokic) are candidates.

I do agree that Canada are looking strong - on paper. In the absence of exceptional talent, chemistry and international experience matter so much e.g. the USA finishing 7th in the 2019 World Cup with a relatively underwhelming roster, but one that's more talented than the potential Canadian team listed above.

Nicolas Batum and Evan Fournier are reaching the end of their NBA careers, so it will be interesting to see how much they contribute at international level. The prospect of adding Embiid and Wembanyama to a front court that already has Gobert has ridiculous defensive potential - especially with the length they already have at other positions.

Slovenia - Luka by himself almost won a bronze...

Europe is loaded, we're kinda lucky not all of them make it…

It looks like USA - France - Daylight - then the rest, including Australia at the moment. Not that we couldn't put ourselves in the top 3 conversation but we would really have to leverage that well worn Boomers culture to get it done. There will be no easy beats in this tournament. And for us to medal, we will need to be full strength and come in with everyone on the same page. If Ben Simmons is coming in with anything less than 100 percent commitment he cant be on the team. I think we have the depth and horses to be one of the top teams but you cant discount Canada, and one of those more average teams with a single superstar (Giannis, Luka) could very well up end us.

I really cant wait for the world cup

Not an expert on French basketball but I'd say Besson and Dieng wouldn't be even in their top 20. Dieng was drafted for potential and while Besson showed he was a good young player here, way way too early to be in line for national team.

Like most tournaments it will mostly come down to availability...

Those lists look great on paper, as does AUS… let's see who shows up…
