Melbourne United may move home games to regional Vic

Melbourne United look set to relocate its home games to regional Victoria if the club can't use John Cain Arena due to a clash with the Australian Open tennis.

Less than a month out from the start of the NBL season, United still doesn't have a venue for early home games.

Melbourne remains hopeful of using John Cain Arena, formerly known as Melbourne Arena, for the first five rounds of the season from January 10 but are awaiting official confirmation around scheduling with the Australian Open tennis.

The world’s first tennis major starts on February 8, but the tournament could require early access to venues like John Cain Arena to fulfil quarantine obligations.

This would prompt United to take its home games to a basketball heartland like regional Victoria.

Ballarat a poor man's Bendigo. Geelong facilities aren’t as good. Not as basketball focused as Bendigo and surroundings.

Bendigo is the basketball capital of Australia and should have an NBL team

- Bendigo Stadium has a 10 court precinct with a brand new show court that seats 4000+ without added seating
- Bendigo stadium is the largest provider of grassroots basketball in the state
- the city already hosts the popular and successful WNBL team spirit and the NBL1 team the braves. Both teams have had great successes and support.
- Basketball in Bendigo has seen rises every year at a grass roots level
- Bendigo is a growth corridor with over 115,000 population it is the biggest inland city in Australia
- A regional representative of Shepparton, Maryborough, Kyneton, Echuca, Castlemaine etc. could make it even more attractive.
- Huge sponsors such as Bendigo Bank and La Trobe University

I don't know if Bendigo is the basketball capital. I’d have Melbourne as the basketball capital and then Bendigo as 2nd.

Makes sense to play games in Bendigo.
