Derrick Walton Jnr rumor

Been reading a rumor that Derrick Walton Jnr is in discussions with the 36ers.
There could be something to this with him being mates with DJV from sydney days. And with DJV having a lot of pull with who we sign, it could be a real possibility.

Thoughts?

Certainly remember the name, but I don't recall how good or bad he was?

Spinner, in NBL23 for the kings he averaged 16pts, 4 rebs and 6 asts a game in 26 games. Had similar numbers across the playoffs and went on to be named Grand Final MVP and was on the All-NBL first team. He's also played 45 NBA games for the Heat, Pistons and Clippers.

Really can't fault this signing if it does happen.

A special mention should also go to his 45 point game against SEM which went to double OT. Went just over 50% from the field but knocked down 12/13 free throws.

As a Kings fan I'd happily take him back. He was frustratingly careless with the ball at times, but after a bit of a dip midseason he finished strong and was probably our best overall player down the stretch.

Be good if Sixers got him over the line.

If Sixers go 3 imports should go one proven experienced guy in the league who is high character and the other 2 new to the league as can get cheaper if scout well.

Need to get the right pf next to Humphries has been an issue the last few years - Wiley and Franks were good players just poor fits next to Humphries and DJ.

Walton would be the best import guard the 36ers have had in years if we got him, it would be an amazing signing

If they can the right pieces to compliment Humphries and DJV they have the potential to be a really good team

Gun but very top end of the payment bracket, plays D when it's need to win as well, came a across as a good team man as well looking from the outside.

Get him to Brisbane.

Then the Sixers can have 'son of an NBA player' point guard Shannon Scott. I promise he's really great guys, almost averaging a triple double in Taiwan.

Looks like the Sixers missed out on Walton, looks like Sem are starting to put together a good roster.

Just add him to the list. Sixers cannot land anyone bar Mayen who is an SA kid.

Shame the 36ers missed out on him, he'd help improve any team in this league

He would have played with DJV in one of the kings titles, probably gets down to money. SEM really opening the purse strings.

DJV is kidding himself thinking he's the key figure to putting together a quality roster like he commented. Reckons all signings are going through him. Even if true that's not the good thing he thinks it is! I'd put money on him throwing his toys and leaving reasonably soon. He still thinks he should be in the nba anyway

If Justin Simon or Cleveland end up at the 36ers then that's on part to DJV. He advocated for Humphries and Cleveland. Cleveland might be out of reach so he’s gone to his old teammate who plays exactly the same Justin Simon.

So the players are now choosing the other players on the team at the Sixers?

How do you think Kevin Brooks ended up in Adelaide or Al Harrington in Sydney or or or of course players recruit guys they know.

I expect it would be normal for key players to suggest possible targets and be asked their opinion about potential recruits, eg character, team fit etc

Final decision would (or should) be with coach and head of basketball.

Once they decide on a player, it would be best to do whatever you can to get them to your club, including have coach and key players (particularly if they know them) contact the player to advocate for the club and try to convince them to sign.

So the club no doubt are discussing potential recruits with DJV (and Isaac etc) to check if any potential issues or if they can help in recruiting them. Doesn't mean any of the players are calling the shots, they will be involved in some way, depends on how they interpret the involvement in their own mind. Either way, no harm in letting them think what they want if it gets players buy in

Were Adelaide ever truly in the mix for Walton JR? From what I understand, they're going hard to nail a high level point. SEM must cashed up this season.

Humphries was at Adelaide before DJV. And you'd hope they would've resigned him with our without DJVs approval. If not the club will go nowhere

I agree with you Peter an effective process would involve consultation with players but that is not how DJV has commented it is working.

It's not like a previous 36ers coach went out and hired an import guard that every one warned him away from...
and it completely blew up in his face….

Maybe this is a deliberate leak which is saying
Hey the front office is now going to take advice from players and others into account.
And the front office is now happy to have recommendations from players also.

Thought DJV actual words were "they are running recruiting by him" or something to that effect?

This to me means they are looking for his input and knowledge / thoughts about a potential recruit, not necessarily his approval. I'm sure they are asking more than just him for input, but ultimately it's the coach and recruiters call. if an import has good chemistry with our top signed players and the players feel like they have input, they should buy in, both of which are a good thing.

If they say we want a defensive 3 (example only), then of course he would throw some names up of players he thinks would work or he knows. The same happens with staff in any business.

I suspect people read more into the comment and DJV was happy to let them think he has more input on decisions.

At a guess I'd say most sides senior players get asked, it would just make sense.
