Cairns scouring the world for next Head Coach

Interesting article here with Cairns hiring a consulting firm to seek the best applicant world wide.
Many locals already applying including "Incumbent Taipans assistant coaches Jamie Pearlman and Jamie O'Loughlin both confirmed they will apply for the top job while Brisbane Bullets assistant Mick Downer will also push for his first head coaching role in the NBL.
Former Taipans assistant coach Gordie McLeod, who earned NBL Coach of the Year honours in 2014, has relocated back to Cairns recently but has ruled himself out of the running to return to a senior role."

Hopefully this isn't like the time the Wildcats scoured the USA for a coach only to appoint Gleeson.

Yes, hopefully Cairns new coach won't deliver them 3 titles in 5 years.

That wasn't my point. They talked it up going to the US then hired a local. They probably just said it to make the US holiday they were taking tax deductible.

Downer been at Brisbane the last few years, not much of a track record there.

Flynn is overrated and his personality won't bring anything positive to the club. Sign Flynn if you wanna lock up the wooden spoon for the next 3 seasons

I remember the Wildcats saying they were embarking on a global search for the right coach, then being excited at the announcement that they had signed one.. then being very disappointed when it was revealed to be Gleeson. 4 out of 5 years he had by far the most talented team in the league, he is one title short of what a good coach would've delivered in the same situation.

Scouring with a scourer or just a sponge? They'll need some serious detergent.

I thought it was hilarious how they made a big deal about searching in the US. People play it down now but probably don't remember how big a deal the club made of it. And yeah, what an anti-climax after it all.

"4 out of 5 years he had by far the most talented team in the league, he is one title short of what a good coach would've delivered in the same situation."

Correct. At least someone other than myself gets it. Most on here think he is some master coach. Keep contributing, as you get it, such a breath of fresh air!

Is that why he bought a house in Carins yet now isn't in contention for the job? How sad and unlucky.

Shawn Dennis may be interested but he is contracted for another season after this one and makes roughly $220k USD per season. He will stay in Japan. Would be lucky to get $120k for Cairns job and a horrible recruiting budget.

This is why I haven't renewed my membership! Correct Joel Khalu is a spud. Jamie O'loughlin is a terrible choice too, especially because the players would roll their eyes everytime he said something. DMac has shown he can't coach at the NBL level. I mean hopefully this is just rumours because if these are actually the candidates then we screwed.

Surely Gordie is the only local worth talking to.

So if he is out look overseas or perhaps even an Aussie coaching in the NCAA

all the locals guys listed are spuds and aren't the high quality guys from the lower local levels because most of the better local guys are successful in other pursuits and don't have the time to dedicate to full time coaching for literally minimum wage assistance coaching jobs.

To call all the local coaches spuds is ridiculous, I'd take any Australian coach ahead of most import coaches, just look at United this year compared to there American coach previously. If you have served your time as an assistant and your credentials stack up take the Aussie.

Joel Khalu is no spud. He is an internationally accredited coach now and a previous QBL title winning coach. He is a local through and through, having ridden the ups and downs of basketball in Cairns for years. Local knowledge and coaching talent are very valuable assets.

No Shawn Dennis in the applicants now?

There is a lot to be said for a coach's familiarity with a league and its players/administration. Mike knows this league by being around it for so long. A coach who has pedigree as a North America-based coach for his entire career may not see success translated to a different continent where so many things are different.

Chill out and give Mike an actual chance. Remember Dean Demopoulos? Remember our boy Sweat Towel Joe?
