Copeland confirmed to coach Geelong

Looks like the Copeland coaching situation has been settled.

The NBL legend will coach Geelong's division one men's side in the Big V competition this season and last night he arrived from Adelaide to meet his prospective new players.

Copeland spoke to the group and also had a look at them in action in the Basketball Geelong domestic competition.

Copeland will take charge of the side when his and the Adelaide 36ers' NBL season is finished.

The 36ers season HAS finished! ha.

Looks like all went cold on copes... he was only going to stick to the Geelong 'Kitty' Cats gig if a better offer didnt come up....

1st think needed with that group is a massive pre-season... alot of unfit cats used to sitting deep on the supercats bench or floating around the 'domestic' level Youth league 2 Big V.

You don't win the comp 2yrs in a row if you are unfit - even if it was div2 youth league. A lot of those guys have experience playing for the Supercats other then just bench warming, so good luck to the boys this year - they have played well as a team for the last 2 yrs so they must be doing something right.

You have got to be kidding... did you ever see that guys playing in that team...?!?! OMG, the team was a joke and couldn't have beaten half the teams in GABA Div.1 the past 2 years! That is the truth.

Don't pump up the tyers of those acheivments, get real.

I watched the team play over the last 2 years, and also saw a few of them play in Supercats team's over the years. With players going to America on scholarships they have been doing something right.
They might not win this year - it is hard for a team in their 1st year of a new comp but they won't be the pushovers that some might suggest. If they keep the core of the team together, where the have had past success it works as a driving factor for future success.
Good luck to them this year and lets see what they can do

US Players... who?... 1 kid is at Nic. State and he is not going to come back setting the house on fire, he's a limited role player at best.

Annon - wake up, playing college does not = amazing player, its all about the system and players.

who besides NS guy Friend are you refering to... the Geelong Females that play college? Whats been going right down there also?

The gaba team will be full of guys who play for themselves as per all geelong teams of the past and prob will include 'heavy wieghts' s.loader & l.oneal just to ..."round" out the team.

You are kidding yourselves if you think Geelong are not a chance this year. All this talk about Loader and O'neill is rubbish. Not the fittest blokes going around but Loader year in year out proves what he can do. No matter what level he has played ie, ABA, Div 1 VBL and yes even Youth League he has been a force on the boards. I'm not going to pump up Geelong's tyres but this team will be no push over. Sitting on a ABA national title teams bench or playing only 10 - 15 minutes a game is still a title last time i checked.

I might be wrong, but I think the post re: american players is referring to Friend, C Dunlop and M Hardiman. Also, questions remain as to whether Friend would play upon his return as last season Nicholl's state players were not allowed to play Big V.

On another point, with no Brebner (staying in cairns), Reardon (going to SA, whatever team signs him), either no Herbert or an import (subject to the appeal), Jamal Brown gone up the road to Ballarat, will those "bench players" be offered more minutes in a rebuilding phase for the supercats? Or will they go to the Div 1 or YL2 sides for more 'guaranteed' time?

I understand that at least 1 player who was coming off the bench last year has chosen to play div1 where they will get more court time - disappointing because they were a good young player, but maybe next year they will change their mind.
Rosters haven't been finalized yet, so it will be interesting to see. The loss of Brebner and either Herbert or Myers will be a greater loss than losing JB - after having 4 teeth knocked out last yr he wasn't the same player, he became too cautious and there were other people who stepped up and contributed more, so JB is probably the easier player to replace this yr for them.
