It may seem a bit of a "what-the" move having him in the team in the first place, given his (lack of) physical size. The same could be said about Ng, and his one-on-one defence this season.
However, what both players can do is shoot the heck out of the ball. Whether or not they deserve minutes in the regular rotation, or merely step up as role players when the team needs to shoot itself out of a situation, should be the crux of this debate, imho. I think the original anonymous criticism is slightly validated in this sense, although it was junk time and the game was gone.
(On a side note, since when has Phil ever given junk-time minutes before to rookies...anyone remember 02 GF series when the 4 rookies sat the whole time? I don't think Madgen logged a minute last year, and Gerlach suited in one game?).
