NH: Cricket Australia bans the Mexican Wave

Spotted this on AdelaideNow and thought it was a bit much.

THE Adelaide crowd will be banned from starting the Mexican Wave at the Ashes Test from Friday.

Cricket Australia announced before the Ashes series the wave would be forbidden in the interests of safety.
On the first day of the Gabba Test match, a member of the Barmy Army was evicted from the ground for playing his bugle.

The same rules again will apply in Adelaide.
Yeah, right up there with cancer, traffic accidents and wearing white headphones after 2AM - putting your hands in the air like you just don't care is dangerous stuff.

That is a joke. I will smile when I see the 1st Mexican Wave going around the ground on mass- how to police it is mind boggling. What an absurd rule.

I think it is more the fact the people also throwing stuff up in the air as they are doing it. Beign a regular to the cricket for Australia games I have been drenched in beer a few times thanks to the Mexican wave. I still love doing it tho.
It is fairly easy to police. Generaly to start it someone is yelling out a countdown and their are plenty of police and cameras about to spot them.

Well maybe they shouldn't ban the Mexican Wave - just ban people doing countdowns!!!!!

Agreed skip - Im sure a few people will try to start a wave after a few beers but they will have to watch the rest ofthe game on TV outside the ground.

As far as doing the wave is concerned its the idiots who throw stuff in the air that have caused it to be banned. Last time I was at the cricket a poor girl nera us - in addition to the beer and other liquids that coivered us all - copped a half eaten pie all over her....while we all laughed it pretty well ruined her day and caused a great deal of embarrassment

Also banned at the cricket:

the wave is great for the crowd - love it at bball - why is there always a few idiots who take the fun out by being as dumb as by throwing stuff and ruining it for the majority... What to do with 'em..
There is nothing funny Statman about having your day ruined by some dickhead throwing food at you.

Speaking of Americans and Cricket. Bizzy and I were speaking to Carlos Powell before the game on Saturday and the cricket was on at the time. Asked him what he knows about. He replied something like "Not a damn thing, but to be 619 points in front has got to be pretty damn good dont it?"

How would they police this?

Richie: " to the folks at home we are waiting the restart of play as the police escort 51,202 paying members of the public out of the ground for engaging in bad behaviour. The members seemed pleased as finally they will be able to enjoy the game in peace and quiet."

There was a story on Hack on Triple J the other night about the crowd control at the cricket. They talked to the ground manager or some bloke high up at the Gabba, who sounded no fun.
He said there were cameras specifically watching the crowd to see who tried to start the mexican wave. How ridiculous! Even more stupid is the "dob people in by SMS" if they're acting stupid!

The cricket wont be the same with the mexican wave and a few drunken yobos! It's all part of the atmosphere...

I love Mexican Waves. It's funny as hell when you see massive waves of beer and cups go up into the air.

Was reading in the paper today that both teams, and management, and most cricket media have been complaining about the lack of atmosphere the "fun police" have created.

I think I speak for most people when I say cricket was pretty much the last bastion where you could have a few frothies, have a bit of a "lads day out" as long as no one actually got hurt.

The sledging and the banter between fans has always been a highlight.

In someways I'm glad I couldnt get a ticket this year, sounds like you would actually have to pay attention to whats happening in the middle....and the way the Poms are playing.....well Will Farley could even defend that bowling!

Why don't we just do the "Aussie Wave"? It's when you are driving and you just lift your index finger to give a friendly "Hello" to the driver going in the opposite direction!

Good to see that we can still FRENCH KISS at the cricket!
