The Intense Scrap

This years under 20's will be a very exciting competition.

I think the front runners will consist of North, Nourlunga, Woodville and West (not necessarily in that order) Norwood and South may also have a shot.

The more relaxed attitude towards 20's often brings out excellent team work aswell as great individual skills, it is a very entertaining league, so support it!

The mass testosterone of 18's is over. Despite being coolies, Dunks/blocks don't win matches...scrapping and scoring do. (and i say that as someone who appreciates and is able to dunk, so dont be calling me weak)

To conclude, Scrap hard, drive hard, pull those sweet J's from range and look after your mum.

Yea scrap rules and good hustle but everyone loves to see the big dunk and block. justs keeps the crowd happy becoz they dont usually appreciate the players who dive for the ball and end each games with corkies and court burns. On that note which player in U20s would have the most scrap and hustle and where would the best dunks be coming from.

Southern will have a dunking team, north will be business as usual, woodville well they will be physical, west will be disiplined and aggressive and norwood will miss top 5...south will need big efforts from players like t-mac and bailey...eastern and centrals have 2 or 3 decent players but not a finals team, sturt have no chance in hell and i reckon im done

North only have one second year in leif burdon who is an absolute gun. Tom Rowe and Jordan Kies are awesome. The thing is tho is that they are a team of guards. they dont have a tall unless theyve recruited someone. Whos is meant to contain the bigger players in the league.

Think everyone is forgetting about the eagles this year in the 20's. Any team with Peter Hoban and Matt Gange would have to be considered a threat!

If you cant take a zone then go play table tennis or something. Its a part of the game...the jump ball should live on, its a travesty that they took it away for so much of the game.
I dont particularly like playing zones at all, but i think the game has been changed enough in recent times...if it aint broke, dont fix it!

Under 20's should be able to take a zone apart, the easies way not to play against zones is burn them with transition, outside shooting and inside action.

U14's and below can't shoot around zones and shouldn't have to play against them.

Gotta admit though it SUCKS always playong zones.

I don't think anyone like playing against a zone. It slows the game and sends it stale. Even boring. Not hard to beat, but harder to beat than a man. Isn't zone defence not allowed in the NBA???

Reply #12054 | Report this post

Team who start in zone at the beginning of a season will get burnt as the season drags on. Zones are not hard to beat and in Under 20's, these teams should take it apart...

Correct, zones are illegal in the NBA.

Reply #12056 | Report this post

Hoop Addict

Zones are no longer illegal in the NBA. They now have a 'defensive 3 seconds' rule, whereby a defender cannot stand in the lane doing bugger all. You can be in the lane for 3+ seconds if you are either actively defending someone, or within one metre of them.

Other than that, zones are legal now. You will find that Dallas often play a bit of zone as do some other teams.

I don't dislike playing against zones. They are pretty simple to beat if you have good teamwork. All you really need to do is pass & move to space, get the defenders moving and there will be holes all over the place. If you have good mid & long range shooters then it makes it very easy to beat.

I think zones are somewhat of a 'cop out' in junior basketball, and even to an extent in seniors. In juniors we should be focusing on getting players fundamentals right, and having a solid base in man-to-man is pretty important. By U20s you are basically seniors anyhow, so I don't think it's a major development issue, probably more laziness than anything else.

I have heard only good things about Southern thus far. My only concern for them is when a team is revolved around 1 player, and that certain player leaves for the AIS or what-have-you, things fall apart.
But it seems they have good depth and will be a good competitor this year.

At least they are looking better than the Southern youngsters, who have declined profusely.

Supercoach himself cant even bring these boys to losing by less than 80

Southern Spanked South by twenty odd with six players. They look in good form but like everyone have a long way to go.

You all seem to be forgetting its summer season... so its really only a chance for everyone to sus out the competition. The winter season is much longer so anything can happen.

oh yeah, did i mention the tigers dominated not only above the rim, with three of the years best dunks so far, coming from jingles and woody, but also showed mad hustle. If you ask me they scrap as good as anyone. If not better. Some sweet shooting going on out there too.

The tigers will lose joe, Smitty and lalic for a while. but they will be sure contenders.

This weeks games will be "the battle of who isnt going to schoolies"

I put my money on woodville over north by atleast 10. Woodville is in very good form, there is not one weak player in that team.
However Tigers and Woodville i couldn't pick it. But the game is at the Dome this weekend and i WONT be missing it! Will tigers have full team for this game? They will definately need it.

I've heard the Joe has now left to go to the AIS this week, therefore he wont be playing on friday, I may be wrong though. I still believe Tigers will beat Woodville though.

And yes as said, it all depends who has a full team without players going to schoolies. Should be interesting.

If woodville and tigers were at full strength, tiger would win. They are too tall and too talented. Due to schoolies, we will see different results compared to full strength teams playing. It's a good chance for woodville to get a win over tigers if they don't spend too much time on the floor getting wood burn (good work sir spark), not many other teams will get a chance for a win there, and south could get a needed win over eagles.

Tigers only got five players tonight. Joe and Lalic on Tour. Woody injured. Shane Boal ? ? ? might be back from injury, not sure.

Anyway regardless of tonights result, you cant say which team is better without seeing them both at full strength. Which wont be at least till finals if not winter season.

But my bet. Southern tigers... Too tall and talented... i mean who in that woodville team has ever even played state let alone AIS???

woodville got up by 20 tonight.

None made SASI apart from one first year, but many deserved a spot i can't mention names.. but still if they are undefeated and do well every season you would think they do! Woodville were missing 3 tonight, southern were missing about the same.

Woodville had 3 players out, 2 hung over and 1 up from div 2.

Friday night was a boring game, the predicted battle of who didn't go to schoolies was evident.

Southern were missing big players, as they only had 5 it was always going to be a battle, the game was closer than the end result indicates and they did well to compete...even though it there was a "cbf" (cant be f****d) atmosphere in the game by both teams.

Nevertheless Woodies up by 20 and sitting equal top with North as far as I have heard.

That's because they didn't play the 6th game...

All North and West games in round 6 through to 9 have been postponed due to players away on the SASI tour.

Interesting because I thought Tigers also had 2 players that went on the SASI tour, they mustn't have complained to BASA like North and West did?? who knows?

I think its more that north and west have alot of players away rather than a couple. (North 4, west 3, southern 2, sturt, forestville and norwood 1 each). But southern are a quility team and can probably have the players away more than west and north. I think this could be a reason.

By the way, does anyone have any scores/stats for the tour??

and Iowa Western Community College on 1st you can go to the college websites and they post the scores - give it a couple of days after the games to get the scores updated. they head off to spain on the 2nd december and start playing on the 4th. i am still trying to work out if i can access the spanish college websites, but hopefully scott or justin will have time to post summaries.

Woodville with only 6 players, missing their 3 big men.
Forrestville with only 7, you could only assume they were also missing players.

Forestville came 4th - only after a tight loss to Woodville, and after losing Matt Gange for alot of the Winter season. Along with Hobo they were the only two state/SASI type players they had last season...not a bad effort.
