Game Thread: Hawks vs 36ers

Game time is 5PM EST (4:30 Adelaide time).

Best bet for scores should be the NBL site or, failing that, Sportal or NineMSN.

We're far from favourites in this game but have the firepower to win.

For me I think Horvath is the key, if he can dominate the Gong's frontline then we will be in with an extremely good chance.

Looks like the starters are:

Groves
Campbell
Saville
Ballinger
Rampton

Maher
Farley
Nash
Horvath
Wheeler

Nash to try and lock down Saville perhaps?

I am trying some of my special "whatever I bet on loses" power to back the Hawks, and for Campbell to outshoot Maher on threes in this game.

I think Hill's just not getting played.

Besides Horvath, our frontcourt is getting killed. Majstro has 1 point. Cooper has 1 point and 1 rebound. Wheeler at least has 6 rebounds.

Hawks 45 rebounds to our 35.

if hill does not get minutes he will walk at the end of his contract. A young guy with potential wants to play and at the moment he is not been given a chance especially considering the team i would think they can find some room for him, either at 1,2 or even 3.

Reply #97592 | Report this post

Without seeing the game its hard to comment - but it looked like we were very lucky to escape with this one. If Hill is not injured there is no excuse to not play him. It would be a disaster to see him walk at the end of the year.

Our 3 big men should have done a MUCH better defensive job on Rampton and Ballinger. Very dissapointed with that.

Also Farley not scoring in the last was not acceptable.

But full credit to them for still managing to get the win. I just dont see much hope this year. Will be a struggle to even make the playoffs.

Good win for the Sixers considering their road trip to Singapore and back. Horvath will go close to mvp this year. He is on fire! Copes is also relishing his opportunity with the Sixers. Expect him to average 12-14 points a game this year.

Somebody tell Farley to get his head out of his ass and start making some shots. Or is he injured?

Brad Hill not playing is a disgrace. If he is injured or there are some other issues, then I can understand, but to not play someone like Brad, yet give everyone else (including Ng) 20 mins is just silly.

Reply #97597 | Report this post

Surely it depends on the game, the situation and the flow as to who gets what minutes.

IT is tough to play ALL 10 players and keep with the game plan in terms of the group's of 5 you want to run out on the court at any one time. I'm not saying Hill isnt worthy to be out there, probably more of a case that Ng got injected first and did well so if you'r first stint out you do well you kinda expect to get out there again, or would you prefer someone playing well not to get another run to try someone who has yet to enter the game.

I'm sure over the season he will get some minutes.

have to also consider the number of players that we have that can play the 2/3 spot as well.

Reply #97601 | Report this post

Isaac

Horvath keeps us in it for three quarters and then Maher puts in an amazing three-minute passage to snatch the game away from the Hawks.

1-1 and this win will give them confidence for the next two games.

I wonder if Nash spent a lot of time on Saville? Sav went 1/13 from the field...

good win to the sixers should see them in good stead, so much negativity after 2 matches and considering we got 1-1 result from a tough road trip where we traveled half way round the world to complete it,

good game by ng as well

twenty four> Why is it silly to give 20 mins to NG? he was after all the MVP of the abl and top scorer of the leagu so i believe he deserves the minutes he is getting as well as Copeland who has put up some good numbers so far, but i have to admit that hill has to be playedx more otherwise he will leave at the end of the year. Its still to early to make a judgement on his playing team.

i dont know why brad hill didnt play but i knew if he didnt get on in the first half he wouldnt get on. i thought Wheeler was solid with 6 rebounds although only 2 points. i reckon if farley was given the time he would have scored 20 points but he was only give 26 minutes. besides you dont need to score as much when you have copeland score 14 points anyway. Mastro did seem to have that great an impact even tho he only had 12 minutes of court time. id expect more from him as the season goes on. NG did well with 6 points a 5 rebounds. pretty solid stuff from him. cooper seemed to be well off his game considering i beleive he had great pre season form and player well against slingers. he only had 5 points and 3 rebounds tonight. he had the mintues to do well just under proformed. Nash seemed to play alright with 5 points and 1 rebound. im gonna assume he did a good job on saville restricting him to just 5 points.i think that nashes will never be as dominate as he once was as his number seem to go down more and more each year. hes well past it now. Horvath will get mvp imo. hes playing extremely well and has been since hes been in Adelaide. hes in for a big year. Maher once again saved our ass and won the game for us. i think he will be as good as he always is but hes numbers will go down. but that doesnt mean that he wont be as effictive

Horvath- needs to keep doing what hes doing.

Wheeler- needs to stay healthy and keep racking up boards.

Mastro- needs more minutes and needs to be more effective in every aspect of his game. isnt he tipped to get most improved?

Farley- needs more minutes then he got today and needs to star making more shots. also needs to not slack off in defence because when he is playing defence he is really good.

Maher- needs to stay healthy all year and keep the team as a unit.

Ng- just keep doing what hes doing.

Copes- needs to stay health and shot a good percentage

Hill- needs more minutes. hes to keep his head up when he goes for a drive and really lift his game to the next level this year.

Nash- needs less court time and try and be a leader and a mentor for the young ones.take a step back from the team and help the other players grow.

Cooper- needs to stay in his preseason form and just give us that big defencive pressence. hopefully he doesnt get in one of the big holes he was in last year.

97607, I'm not saying that Ng shouldn't be getting minutes, I'm just saying that I would've thought that Hill would get at least SOME, as Brad, IMO, is probably a better player.

I think Hill and Ng will be battling each other for court time most the season.

They are obviously going to be used for their offence, so it's pretty much going to come down to in each game, do we need Ng's ability to drain a quick couple of 3's or Hills ability to get to the ring.

I think Phil had to make the tough (and correct IMO) call of not playing one of Hill or Ng. I think at this stage Ng is more experienced and a better player. Had Ng been playing for Eastern and Hill for Sturt in ABA it would have been an Eastern vs Forestville Grand Final.

Surely it was just a case of Copes got his run first, Ng than got a small oppurtunity and both of them performed well so it was a no brainer of unfortunetly Hill you remain on the bench.

Had one of these 2 not performed well I'm sure Hill would have got a run in the second stint instead of Ng/Copeland.

Hill should be getting a run, just on his final 4 weeks form of the aba season...We need to look to the future a bit here, even 10 minutes is beneficial to getting used to the speed of the nbl game.
We really should have Copeland coming off the bench as a "super sub" as well IMO.

let's not forget that hill was only playin PG last year because we didn't have Ng, Brad is just as effective - if not more playing the 2. I agree with Wolly that he needs to be more confident and sure of himself when driving - and shooting from outside, i think he could take a page out of Brad Newlwy's book in that regard.
