Starbury's el cheapo shoes

Stephon Marbury cops a lot of flak for his playing style, ie a me-first point guard who looks to shoot first, pass second etc and whose teams never win.

But there's an interesting story here about his new shoe, which is selling for US$14.98. He's even going to wear the shoe himself during games this season. The official website apparently is here, although my dumb work computer isn't letting me through its firewall to see it.

I think it's a reasonably noble gesture for a guy who's regarded as selfish (although, yes, he's called the line "Starbury").

Normally your hoops stars get paid a lump sum to endorse shoes, which are then sold for prices way in excess of $US15. Marbury's only getting a cut on how well the shoes do.

I realise that he's probably not going to go broke if this venture doesn't work, but all the same, in an era when companies show no qualms in paying NBA stars dollar amounts with vapour trails of zeros to flog shoes that a lot of people can't afford, this is kind of refreshing.

The price will give it an instant low-quality, dodgy reputation. Children will be ridiculed for wearing it on the court, that's my guess. Could be a hit in Africa or China though?

Maybe, Isaac. If Starbury didn't wear them himself, then I would definitely agree with you (about them getting the dodgy rep).

I like this because it implies him saying "having shoes that cost ten times more doesn't mean they're ten times better, or that you'll play ten times better".

It also shows that if you can make a decent shoe and sell it for a profit at $15, then the other companies must be adding obscene mark-ups to their $150 products. Of course, the alternative argument is that they wouldn't do this if no-one was willing to pay that much.

Who's ever heard of Rocketfish before?

Counterpoints: An Industrie t-shirt doesn't cover you more than a Target t-shirt. Everyone knows that the mark-up on branded products is obscene.

They might be slightly popular now, but 10-15 years ago, remember the stigma associated with Dunlop Volleys? Even K-Swiss once had the same deal.

I was reading somewhere that the Starbury's come in 4 different models and basically the Manhattan area sold out in a matter of hours. People were only allowed to by 4 pairs at a time, and a special Knicks design was also released, but only in the city of New York.

They have got to be better than those dodgy KanagaROO's.

Heard these shoes have already recieved a half decent reputation from inner city kids within NY. If the Knicks have the season they are projected to have, this shoe will sell very successfully, Knick fans are desperate to support this team.

I wonder if the Knicks have got specialists to check the sneaker for adequate support. If Marbury wears an inferior shoe so as to sell them and does a ankle, the Knicks will lose out on the huge salary they are paying him.

"remember the stigma associated with Dunlop Volleys?"

As a longtime wearer of Dunlop Volleys, hell yes I do!

Picture the schoolyard.
"DC's mother must be on crack dude!"
"Why's that?"
"Because he's been forced to used former doggie bags covered in vomit as a pair of shoes!"
"That isn't doggie bags covered in vomit, that's a pair of Dunlop Volleys!"

You've totally missed the point Matt W, I am saying he gets paid so many million a year, and for him to be wearing a shoe without adequate support would be bad news for the Knicks, hence they would need to test them themselves, to be confident in him wearing them.

TR, Kobe8 believes events of that type are also covered while wearing Nike. If I took a photo of his shoe cupboard, you would understand.

It would be covered because the shock that was caused by the Nike running on the floorboards at Pasadena caused the light to fall.....

Haha, Nike just emailed me and thanked me for my ongoing support! Ofcourse you can do an ankle etc in a pair of Nikes and other leading brands, but there must be a minimum of support that a shoe must offer a professional athlete. I just think that the trainers etc would check this with a 'new' brand a player may wear. They'd probably know Marbury would risk his ankles to become $bury!

Any money on Starbury actually having a 'game' shoe made by a leading brand that resembles the Starbury el-welfare brand??

K8, out of interest, just how many pairs of Nikes do you own???

I have a nutter work colleague that each month he buys a new pair of shoes, last counts was at 47 pairs.

If Starbury did a ankle-snapping cross over, it would probably be his own ankle that go crack...

and1 is the worst shoe there is, they have no support at all,and when the 6ers was sponsered by them they had all the problems in the world with foot injuries. The podiatrist who dealt with the sixers told me that i should throw mypair out and go for something like the T-macs or New Blance because they offer much more support. So if these Marburys are anything like And 1's S.M will be in big trouble and there goes another chance for the knicks!!!!

Awnser, you do know that Marbury wore And 1 for years don't you? He didn't seem to have problems then and when you consider that something like 30% of the NBA wear And 1, then they must be OK.

Now, I agree that And 1's aren't the best shoes for support and what not, but I'm pretty sure that if a shoe was messing players feet up, they wouldn't wear them any amount of money.

yes you make a good point 24, but the sixers did have alot of problems with there feet. This was when Maher, Catallini,Nash and Rogers all had probs with there feet! do the NBA players wear a normal And 1 shoe like of the footlocker display like us,or do they have anything done to them? can anyone help me.

Thanks

every brand make both "good" and "bad" shoes, look at the shoes themselves.

Do some research before you "bag" a pair of shoes. WTF do you mean by "support". Really do you have any idea what you are talking about, or are you just dribbling s&$t???

Most if not all have good heal counters these days. Look at rear foot stabalisers, durometer rating etc, but dont come on here and generalise "support" when you clearly have no idea.

I see bla bla bla, support, bla bla bla. elaborate or shut up really, just another pleb talking up their favorite brand.

Awnser,
As usual your points are so far wrong I don't even know where to start.
Maher didn't have feet trouble, Nash had back problems and Cattalini hurt his feet playing in Spain wearing NIKE!

Brad,
I really haven't got time to argue with you except to suggest you find out who the team doctors, physios, podiatrists of the 36ers really are. Sportscare in Wakefield Street and at Hindmarsh, Sportsmed at Stepney, not sure if any of these names ring a bell or not.
Graham Lee and Michael Woodcock have been doctor and physio of the team from before you were born.
Check your facts rather than argue with people who really know.
Look forward to your illogical, unbalanced reply when you get home from school.

Cattalini also didnt wear AND1 during his time at 36ers, as they where not right for his feet. lets face it, the new starbury shoes will be just like Shaqs, a big flop. sell now, but in time just be in the shadow of the all-mighty NIKE. different shoes fit different people. and if you look at shoes that players such as Kobe, Jordan, etc wear, they have been made to fit their feet. and in some rare situations, such as Carters, the shoes made for them are not as comfortable as they first thought, and end up wearing something different. at the end of the day, you put a face behind a shoe it will sell, no matter how crap it is. Volleys became popular, why? because celebs starting to wear them, for example Andrew G from Australin Idol and Channel V. starbury is gettin cash for it, he has to, he wouldnt do it for moral ethics, who the hell would.

I made the mistake of wearing Starbury 1's in a real game. In my 4th game I ruptured my plantar facia because of what my DR deemed inadequate foot support. It started with plantar facia and didn't know what the pain was.

Damn theres some heated arguements up there, shoes is all personal choice, i've tried plenty of brands (minus dunlop volleys) had 2 pairs of AND1s and one had great support and the other was pretty much shyt, but love them either way. I've seen firsthand upmarketing and honestly, i think Starbury is a great idea for those who can't afford the $400 jordans (which i still do love)
