Any thoughts from the experts on this deal?

Denver acquires J.R. Smith via trade from Chicago for Howard Eisley and two 2007 second-round draft picks.

The theory is that Eisley can be waived without penalty so expect the Bulls to do this soon to create more cap space for the resigning of Hinrich.

Actually its so they can waive eisley in order to sign adrian griffin back from dallas. He has already accepted a 3year offer, just need the cap space.

I wondered if that might be the case. Just feels a bit weird with these NBA deals being done just to offload big contract burdens.

And they don't even involve off loading to the Knicks ... Eddie Curry who!?

Good pickup of more draft picks for Chicago in the deal. Can use the second rounders to take a punt on some long shots with potential possibly.

With the contract thing, it's always going to happen as longs as a guy's ability never matches their contract. To be fair to Howard Eisley, he's never been much more than an average NBA player, so I don't know why he would have ever been given such a contract (in value and length) to begin with. I suppose it's just the idiot GMs who feel they need to stroke player's egos by paying what the player thinks he's worth.

Since word got out about Nene's big contract (about $10 million per year reportedly), every big with decent ability (e.g. Chris Wilcox) thinks he's worth the same. The GMs will cave and pay up usually, and then they'll regret it for years to come.

Maybe the NBA should make the 'Allan Houston rule' and annual thing, so that clubs get a bit of an out if a player on big moneys ends up coming up small. This would ensure to an extent that player's are always valued in trades for their ability, and not for their contracts.

Denver need a off guard, why not roll the dice and try with a former high school all usa. Yes he has attitude, perhaps Caremelo can mentor him (joke). Can dunk and shoot and is young.

J.R. Smith needs to learn to do more than just shoot. He's also got to stop having such a quick trigger on the outside shot. Have a look at his per 40 minute stats to see what I mean:

Smith really should be entering his junior season in college at the moment. As a general rule, I'd give players until 6 years after their high school graduation to decide whether they're a player in the NBA or not. That's usually around 24-25 years of age. Smith is 4 whole seasons away from that type of judgement, so he's got plenty of time to work out the kinks in his game.

This time last year the Hornets surely wouldn't have ever thought of getting rid of him so quickly. After his fairly successful rookie season, Smith started to believe his own hype and had an inflated sense of his own importance. By complaining about minutes last season, he instantly labelled himself as a troublemaker, so he'll need to beat that wrap now too.

Smith has all the physical tools, he just needs to get the mental aspects in order. If he fully commits to working hard, playing defense and being a team player he'll do well in the NBA.
