ABA Stats - Are they accurate?

I was looking at the stats for the games this weekend and i couldn't help but notice that Sturt had 19 Turnovers for the game, but West was credited with 22 Steals!

I know they are very much appreciated volunteers giving up time to help out our league but the amount of times we have noticed missing stats in our games, Do they get audited or checked on from time to time?

dont' have a dig at the stats people, it's gotta be a glitch somewhere. The software we use doesn't allow a steal with crediting a turnover.

Double checked the boxscores and they have the discrepancy also. Often the rebound counts from my stats won't match the boxscores as I ignore team rebounds. Not sure what would cause this for steals and turnovers.

if we enter a steal to a player, but miss the T/O (yes, we are human and sometimes make mistakes) the system will credit the team a turnover automatically. Not sure if this shows up on the boxscore, or Isaacs system, but it shows up on our running 'event' screen

even the nba got them wrong - they had some bloke with 36 points in 12 minutes during the title playoffs!

We can all forgive the stats people for making a few mistakes but i personally am very sceptical at some of the "home cookin" in some cases. There certainly seems to be a bias towards some catagories in some stadiums and in some cases, certain players.

I agree that it is probably a glitch. Normally the Turnovers are far higher than Steals as you can have a Turnover recorded (ie individual fumble, travel etc) without having a Steal recorded for the other team. Conversly if you have a Steal it has to be a Turnover for the opposition.

As for the sceptics I have yet to meet a player that doesn't think his Stats are better than what they actually are.

Some of the problems with stats are caused by the fact that statisticians can't read the player numbers quickly enough.
This is caused by - lack of contrast such as the South men's white top with very light grey numbers, the dificulties in determining 6, 8, & 9 in some fonts like the one used by North women, numbers too low on the top getting obscured and folded into the tops of shorts, front numbers low down in the middle of the shirt again being obscured by folds in the uniform. If Clubs want accurate stats then help the statisticians (and the score bench) by having decent, contrasting numbers in positions than can be easily seen. It is not unusual for a stats caller to have to make 6 or 7 calls in the space of a couple of seconds. We need all the help we can get.

Statisticians also have to contend with coaches standing in their way. Same as shot clock operators.

Coaches especially the men who tend to stand more. You can stand at the opposite end to the scoretable stats area.

There is yet to be a see thru coach.

Please don't get me wrong, i value their great contributions and wouldn't ever have a go at someone doing stats... hey, they can miss as many of my turnovers as they want! Lol

i only raise the question as ppl's stats can often reflect future playing time
