ABA Draw Unfair?

The fairness of the ABA draw has been discussed already on this site. Most of the discussions were about the 22 game draw and the fact that it is impossible to make the draw even because you play some teams three times and others only twice. And because the men and women play against the same teams each week, any attempt to go by the rankings from last year is made even more difficult.

But I would like to draw attention to something that can surely be avoided and seems extremely unfair. On the weekend two teams (South and North) had to play two games but their Sunday game was agianst a team that did not have to play Saturday night. Surely the draw can be put together so that anytime teams are required to back up on Sunday after playing on Saturday that they are playing against a team that is also in the same boat?

the draw has been available for many many weeks now, and those pro-active teams would have reviewed the program ahead of them and made queries and requests for changes before the season even started.

no use whinging now.

Surely ABA teams should be fit enough to backup with 24hrs on the odd occasion??

How about the 4 teams South has to play twice also - Sturt, Woodville, Forestville and Norwood. Apparently the draw went off to some Canadian company for concoction, who do the draw for the big leagues. I don't think they did a very good job

If you look at the draw every team is in the same situation on double headers just on different weekends. Get over it!

The bottom line is no competition is ever fair when the draw is uneven such as our situation with playing 22 games with only a 10 team competiton. so the answer is DONT DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Its absolutely stupid with NO upside what so ever play 18 or play 27 but the current foramt is absolutley rediculos

The process re the ABA programme is that ALL clubs have ample opportunity to look at the draft and place requests.
The programme is done by Basketball SA staff, and is only delayed by the slowness of some clubs in responding to the drafts.
The reason we play 22 rounds, and the consequences of this is due to the fact that some clubs (or club personel) refuse to extend the season to an even three rounds (27 games), so point the finger in the appropriate direction.
22 game is better than 18 - think of how many years players need to play to gain life membership at 18 per season.

Isn't life membership based on season's played not games???

"so point the finger in the appropriate direction"

I think people here are! We HAD a fair competition last year - 18 rounds, everyone plays each other twice, home and away. Now we play half twice, half three times, we have differing number of home and away games - it's farcical.
BSA changed one of the few things it had right!

"so point the finger in the appropriate direction"

That's the point you're wrong. BSA aren't to blame.

If you knew what you were talking about you'd know that.

A majority vote by the Senior Commitee made up of Club Delegates made the decision. As has been explained on this forum plenty of times already.

Let's recap all the past threads for those who haven't seen them. 22 is the right number of games for the comp. 18 is too little, 27 is too much. The main reason for not having 27 is there just aren't enough resources to cover them (eg stats, bench, in short all the behind the scenes people!).

Now that's sorted, here are 2 further improvements that can be made.

To work out who plays each other 3 times, have 2 groups based on last year's results:

1,4,5,8,9 and 2,3,6,7,10. The 4 extra games occur within these 2 groups. Fair for everybody.

Now that can not work if all 22 games are home and away. So the extra 4 games (in the groups above) are played midweek at Wayville or Dome like the old days at Apollo. There are 20 games total. If they were 4 games a night there would be 5 midweeks. Most people want at least a partial return to the midweek, so here is a perfect opportunity to trial it.

Mid week is the way to go....permanently!

Midweek idea is decent and what you've suggested is a good way to ease back to it.

84507 good to see some vision laced with common sense . How bout some marquee games saved for double headers on a wednesday night , say at wayville with a bit of promotion. More likely to get a crowd than on a weekend where half the players let alone spectators would rather be doin other s...
As for the split of games , all is fair when ya winning .

what do you think of putting a uni team into the competition. Flinders, Uni SA and Adelaide could put in a combined team into the ABA. They have some pretty good players and if they could get a couple of starters they would probably be more competitive... Just a thought

If they had enough funding and support it could be a good option. But, with respect, in my experience playing against them I could only say I've come across 1 player that would make an ABA team, possibly as a reserve PG at best. They would need some cash to 'woo' players from other clubs.
