Must read a rule book

Are new umpire's told to read the rule book before they pick up a whistle. Or are they put on the court (thrown into the deep end).

Not looking to slander referee's just a general question....

What is the process for jnr umpires and who deceided's when they stop wearing the green shirts and move up to te Grey shirts.

like many experiences learn on the job is best training so long as environment is safe
if you having a crack at young referees - get a life - have a go yourself - most young refs do great job they are fine until loud mouth adults start giving them grief

interested parent - do you read the rule book before you send your children out to play?

Many parents beleive they KNOW the rules, but don't.

If kids read the rule book from front to back before the umpired many games IMO the rule book wouldn't make much sense and would probably confuse them because there is a lot of techical information there that clouds the issue.

Allow them to be guided by the UIC's their peers and by watching much better referee's.

They like players learn by experience. They also attend training sessions and have assessments.

yea ive got a copy... not overly technical... fair easy to read... jus very long!!! lol... reading over the rules isnt a bad idea for jnr refs, even snr refs for that matter. but there are things you cant learn from a piece of papper! for example: say the difference from reffing a junior game as opposed to a men's (or women's) game... how to interperit calls... what things to let go... etc

reffing is a whole different world to playing... u get abused a whole lot more as well!

advice to any jnr ref... be confident, straight forward, give breif explinations to players or coaches if asked and appropriate and dont be influenced by your surroundings ie. be intimidated! the game is what your there to ref, so ref it! :o)

cheers!

To the original question. Majority of times people start officiating the games without reading the rule book.

As you develop, you are going to have to pick up a copy sometime in order to pass exams. Theory is part of all referees courses, with some not requiring the right answer but the correct article as well.

I would say I have a very good understanding of the rule book, but still pull it out from time to time to go over things.

my sis has recently become an umpire and she is consistently going on about how much abuse an umpire cops during a game i think its disgusting because most of the parents dishing out the comments have never umpired themselves!

It's now firmly embedded in our culture to abuse sporting officials. It's wrong but as parents seem to be setting such a good example to their kids, it isn't gonna change anytime soon.
