Secondly, yes, the crows made a blunder and as a result, the AFL are going to make them pay for it by not allowing the crows the chance to draft any player with the father-son rule until Andrew Macleod's son is old enough to play in the AFL.
The biggest point here is that the AFL had a chance to forgive the crows for their blunder and allow them one concession. It is the AFL's attitude, however, not to give any clubs west of Victoria an inch of favour if they can help it, this was obviously shown by the rule change. I bet instead of discussing whether or not to grant the rule change in Adelaide's favour, they sat there and brain stormed an idea and an excuse as to why they would not allow this rule change.
They penalise the club for a blunder but it is the fans who are the ones that will play, I remember playing against Ross Gibbs and he was a fantastic player for Glenelg, playing over 250 games. What a tragedy that his son won't be able to stay in Adelaide because of a "Technicality"
You will notice that the AFL have also made blunders by letting West Coast and Port Adelaide draft a player under the father-son rule that were not elligable under the old ruling.
This new ruling makes these drafted player legitimate. This was a mistake by the AFL so they aren't penalising the clubs, however, they have quickly moved in to disadvantage West Coast for the future by not letting the younger brothers of this player who was originally drafted illegaly under the father-son rule ineligable to be drafted under the new father-son rule, go figure that out.....
Could you imagine if they said that Geelong could have Gary Ablett jr, but not Nathan Ablett. There would be a riot. Let's not forget who the father-son rule was made to benefit. Clubs who had past players in the VFL competition, notice that they all come from Victoria.
The AFL is truely an expanded VFL and not a true national competition. I say fold the current competition and start from scratch where every team would have to apply to take part, thjs way we can even up the fairness of the competition and not have what we have now where the AFL make token gestures to interstate clubs West of Victoria to make them feel on "Par" with all the other teams.
