Boti sums it up

Boti's article in today's advertiser really summed up the pathetic state of affairs for the Sixers and basketball in this state.

In the absence of any other news from Basketball SA or the Sixers management, the basketballing community in this state can only draw the conclusion that days are numbered for the Sixers and district ball probably won't be far behind.

The Sixers haven't gained anything for this year and have managed to lose one of it's star players to Brisbane. There just doesn't appear to be any light at the end of this tunnel - the bulb is gone!

We can only pray for Kevin Folley to come to the rescue - - how sad is that?!

whilst he may be correct in his assumptions - if there is to be a future we need to be careful and directive - especially when you have a large influence through the media

how can we get people interested / involved when it is all being talked down?

talk and think bad = bad

talk and think good = good

The new team this year plus the gold coast next year will dilute the teams down to maybe 6 solid players each with vets/ rookies off the benches.

20 new spots open up and so almost 2 players per team shuffle around looking for new money and minutes.

The best teams will be those that can buy 6/7 decent players ie Tigers this year.

Is the league talented enough to support the teams it has?

Are there enough bums on seats players available in Australia for every team to have a decent shot at the title? Or will the past relive itself with only a few stacked teams being really competitive and the rest making up the fodder.

There are only so many guns out of the AIS worth recruiting or do we need to get on our bike and follow Goorj lead and go to the college system to load up teams with rookies who can hold their own.

Go the college route IMO. They're capped as rookies, they're still a 3 under the points cap and they have four years of experience and development on top of the AIS-level kids.

There are a lot of players over there - for rookie salaries, surely you could take a gamble on someone. e.g., Chris Cameron is a Senior, 6'11", 122 kg - bit of a tank, but wouldn't be hopeless - went through AIS with Schensch, Holmes, Mottram, Caporn, Carter, Crosswhite, Forman, etc. There would be loads of others too.

This is pretty harsh:

Ingles fielded seven offers from NBL clubs and guess where Adelaide's rated? It was #7.

Karma is a funny thing. Championships were won whilst breaking the salary cap rules and money spent recklessly. Now the coaches and club find themselves with few options which have been self inflicted. What goes around, comes around. Be interesting to see if the coaches have the balls to stick it out or bail citing management failures in a year or two. What cost a championship? If it means the demise of a club a few years after the glory then that is mismanagement by ALL involved, not just the people upstairs. The current coaching regime has a lot to answer for but they'll disappear into the night looking squeaky clean and leave the mess for somebody else to clean up.Seen it happen before.

I think it's unfair to blame the coaching staff for any financial trouble we are in. They haven't ever cut a contracted player and they can only spend money on players that management give them.

The coaching staff may have their flaws but you can't put our financial troubles down to them.

The coaching staff have continuously told players that they are worth more than the club is paying them. In order to let the players know who much they value them. This has created a system where players are asking more than the team can afford. And thus the need to overpay and break the salary cap.

Wow, Iam amazed to hear that there is all these problems. Being in Melbourne I have always seen Adelaide as the the second best area for quality of their junior programs. Not being able to convert into the NBL with guys like Ingles etc is a very worring concern, but I suppose multiple players for each spot means someone moves to another club alah Ingles.

So if the quality of the players are there then there must be a something significantly wrong somewhere else? From all the passion on the other topics there is some very clear finger pointing at past decissions.

But above all else there NEEDS TO BE AN NBL TEAM in Adelaide because there is more passion for the game from 1 Adelaide supporter than 5 Melbourne supporters.

Heres a question (should this be a new topic sorry)would there be more support and appreciation of 36rs to have mostly locals and no imports and be mid level comp team or go for 2 quality imports and pay top dollar to be regular semi finalist? Which would put the most bums on seats?

The likelihood of the Sixer falling over (or more to the point SA not having an NBL side) is very slim. With the rumoured buyout of the Sixer still floating around and there being more than the one interested parties I can see a sale of the Sixer being an viable option or a brand new NBL club starting up and playing in SA right away. As I see it is very slim that the Sixer will die, even with out a sale of the origination I can see the 2 entities being separated and ran independently. As soon as that happens and the main priority for the Sixer management shifts back to basketball they can move forward, but at the present time it is still all one big jumble where all the financial transactions are being investigated.

I imagine April 30th a major announcement will take place, If the South Australian government decide to stop financing the Sixer and cannot come to a head of agreement to sell both the dome and the sixers as one (the $10.45 M for the Dome is going to be very difficult to recoup). The One of the problem the new owners may face is where do they play home games? If the state government take ownership of the dome as they cannot agree on the price of the sale they will be asking for some very high rent on it and will be doing any new consortium any favours to rent them the entertainment centre at a cheap price either (government owned again)

Where could a NBL side play? Out at Starplex with a temporary grandstand (3000 people) ETSA Park (netball) with almost 3000 people as well?

By no means is it all doom and gloom if you are a die-hard basketball fan, but the Sixer may have a few hard years ahead of them.

Ive noticed that NBL teams are getting Diluted this year.... I think teams may have to dip in the AIS and junior leagues a little prematutrely to make up for this.

Joe,

I can't see NBL basketball being played anywhere else apart from the Dome. What use is the Dome to the govt (assuming they even take ownership)but to play basketball. Rather than have no income from this venue due to overpricing the rental charge, I would have thought they would set a rental charge at a level with what can be supported by a team ....some inflow is better than none.

Joe M I also disagree that if the Government take back the Dome, they will charge high prices for the rent. I can't see the Government deliberately having a hand in killing the only NBL team we have in SA. With the pride associated with the Grand Prix and then having lost it to Victoria, the Government expressed disappointment at that loss. I think they will do everything in their power to make sure the club survives. It would be an embarrassment to the SA Government to lose an NBL team, particularly when its a team that attracts more spectators than any other NBL teams. South Astralia like every other state prides itself on its sporting achievements.

I also personally feel that the Government taking over the Dome would be the best thing for club so it can rid itself of the crippling debt and make it more attractive for private sale. Like a bank taking over your home if you default on your mortgage payments, the same would apply here. There must be some good use for the land even if the building is knocked down. Alternatively, the Government can use it in the same way as the Entertainment Centre if a smaller venue is required. The Entertainment centre would be the best place to play out of. Anything else is too small.

Lets face it - why did we ever build the dome?? For the sake of thirteen or so home games per season, wouldn't the money have been better spent building a multi court (about six courts) district venue and use the entertainment centre for NBL.

$12M for a venue which does not suit district ball (court 2 is a joke) and is only used for those few NBL games a year, is clearly misappropriation of funds!!!!

Well it's all too late now, so unless there is an ""Alan Scott who wants to rescue basketball in this state, we will have to hope that our treasurer will dig deep and pull us out of this crap.

because at the time the then administration and government had realised that Basketball had out grown the ONLY other venue suitable at the time to host National matches at the time it was a innovative and great move forward unfortunetly season changing times and other venues being built took revenue that at the time was promised by the then government in power,

so at the time great move great idea and certainly well worth it,

14 years later Miss Management and Un Kept Promises by State Government has made it a multi Million Dollar Debt, but on another note government is still makeing money off it its called "NEGATIVE GEARING" and strangely enough is how rich people (land tycoons) get richer,

end of the day its still a awesome stadium and leaves ANY of the other nbl teams stadiums FOR DEAD

btw entertainment centre for NBL would not happen and would be useless as its design would not permit a FAN freindly sporting enviroment, for starters you would be miles away from the court and Massive metal pilons will stop the view from allround the centre as its designed for a Stage in one end not a court that needs to be seen from all angles

huh...too late to sell the 6er's...well not to late for a buyer, but leave it for another month or so and the price will dirt cheap. Should have sold the license 3 months ago when it was first aired for the best price.
