Well, the first edition of Hang Time is out and it looks packed with info. Great work to anyone involved with the content.

Ins and outs, previews and so on. Spread the word and let's boost the crowds.

BLOCK BUSTER SEASON OPENS

Welcome to the 2006 BankSA State League (ABA) season that promises to be even more competitive than 2005. The disappointments of the early exit of the 36ers and Lightning from the NBL and WNBL finals series has whetted the appetites of the basketball junkies who will now switch their allegiances to the various local clubs.

BankSA has extended its already long term sponsorship of the State League once again. It has offered its expertise to the sport to enhance the manner in which the League will be presented. To BankSA we extend basketball's thanks in anticipation of a successful partnership in 2006.

2006 marks the tenth year of Basketball SA's State League involvement as the Central League in the Australian Basketball Association. Prior to that the Adelaide Buffalos (1987 to 1995) and the Adelaide Opals (1993 to 1995) provided opportunities for the up and coming athletes from our State League to compete in the predecessor of the ABA, the CBA. Before that individual clubs competed in the CBA and its predecessor SEABL. Spiraling costs caused the gradual exodus of individual clubs from involvement in these interstate competitions. Thus, our State League's involvement in the current ABA continues to provide the opportunity for our premier clubs to test themselves at the ABA National Finals.

At the 2005 National Finals the ABA announced a three-year contract with Champion. The result will see our individual clubs suit up in new uniforms after the initial holdups have been overcome. With Molten again sponsoring the ABA, clubs have also benefited from the supply of basketballs. Contrary to media reports, the costs to Basketball SA of our State League's continuing involvement in the ABA is significantly less than the figures quoted. In reality those costs will reduce by 10% in 2006.

It will be interesting to see the impact of the Salary Cap rule this year. Its design is two-fold: to curb the costs to clubs and to assist with the development of a more even competition. The 2005 men's league was highly competitive from top team to bottom team. If a similar status can be attained with the women's league, then the efforts of administrators will be positively received.

Once again the "restricted player" rule has impacted negatively on at least one of the powerhouse clubs of 2005 as it had done to others in previous years. The principal effect has been the forced movement of players from the clubs with which they have had a long-term relationship. The rule will be reviewed during 2006.

Pick up a copy at a game to read all the details.

isaac - did you pull all those player names out of the hang time?

They were sent to me independently of the Hang Time program, but I think it's the same info that goes into it. I think I did the same thing last year to aid with tipping.

Hang Time itself has a previews and in/out notes that still make it worth picking up at a game IMO.

Well, how about this for a start.

Restricted players that have:

a. played a long period of time for a team, or
b. played a substantial amount of junior basketball at a club

should be allowed to play unrestricted for that club, but are still restricted for other clubs.

These guidelines should form the basis of any change to the rule. We need to stop teams loading up on imports and piggy-backing off the development work that other clubs do (both in SA and around Australia).

Added.

Also, I've been notified of some additions to the Eastern Mavericks women: Emma Fellowes, Penny Gollan, Regan Pitt and Dearna Schinella.

Jordan Dodman and Shane Breheny were missing from the Sturt Sabres men but should probably be there as far as I'm aware.

Yeah, poor Forestville Women, they'll have to actually play some of their OWN juniors now.... like Rebecca Duke.....

Having said that, I agree with point (b) - long term juniors should be exempt.

Or like Deanna Ranford, or Kylie Newbold, or Nerelle Lindsay, or Jess Fergus, or Gemma Boyton, or Jo Matthews, or Jamie Bow.

6 out of 14 ain't bad. Not that those 6 will play much but, ohh Well.

Yes Olivia, Tracey & Colleen I think all were tiger juniors before they left? I maybe wrong not sure and Rebekah was a Southern Suns senior player.

West Adelaide before Adelaide Suns. And Terri-Jo was from Sturt.

but why does a whole group of players and the coach just up and leave a club? Surely not just for a change? I know that some of those players loved that club only a couple of years back. They may not have been original junior players but they had been around the club for a long time.

Anon, please just accept that the girls that left South for Southern have their reasons, and we can all move on and concentrate on basketball.

Terri-Jo was both a Broken Hill and Sturt junior. Came down in bottom age Under 18's from memory and then played 4-5 years (I think!) before moving to South. Colleen followed Steve Knight to Sturt in 16's and stayed until 2003 when she moved to South.

Mmm, lemme see:
Jamie Fricker
Tracey Beatty
Sarah Peddle
Kate Burkevics
Colleen Kaesler
Tamara Walker (Birbeck)
Rebekah Redden
(ALL ex-NCT or Southern juniors)

I'm not gonna get into muck-raking -unlike you, I'm above that.

BTW, I think it's charming you hide behind "anonymous" as a name. Don't you have the guts to put any name to your comments?
