Summerton Reaches Agreement With Sun

UNCASVILLE, CT. (February 24, 2006) The Connecticut Sun announced the signing of forward Laura Summerton to a one-year contract Friday.
As per team policy, no terms were released.

A 6-foot-2 Australian who played limited minutes for the Sun last season, Summerton averaged 15.1 points and 8.5 rebounds per game for Adelaide of the WNBL this winter. She finished in the top 10 in both scoring and rebounding average for Australia's top professional women's basketball league.

"Laura was one of our most improved players last year," Connecticut Sun coach Mike Thibault said of the 22-year-old Summerton. "The experience she gained should be invaluable to her continued growth and contribution to our team. In reality, compared to American players, she would just be finishing her college career. Our plan is to use her at all three frontline positions in training camp, allowing her to take advantage of her speed and athleticism."

Summerton was recently selected to play for the Australian National Team in the 2006 Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Melbourne from March 15-26. Her teammates will include WNBA veterans Lauren Jackson and Tully Bevilaqua.

Loffhagen, a 6-2 forward, is the captain of the New Zealand National team that will play for a Gold Medal at the Commonwealth Games in Australia next month. She averaged 14.3 points and 12.2 rebounds per game during three games against the Cuban National Team last week, and she was the leading rebounder at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Loffhagen has also starred in international competition for New Zealand's netball team, and she has played for both the New Zealand and Australian professional basketball leagues.

"This is a player we've tried to sign for a year," Thibault said. "She was the leading rebounder at the last Olympics, and she has been the glue and the go-to player for the National Team. Her commitment to netball kept her from coming last year. She will give us an experienced frontline player who will help with our rebounding in particular."
