Someone is just a little bit bored, aren't they?
I would love Phil to leave the 36ers and Steve take over.

Contracts people, contracts, unless of course Phil has a euro /NBA out clause....
This was only a rumour. Well he did have a no cut clause in his contract as a player. Yet Dunlap still cut him. As he did a lot of players back then. It was a rumour at one stage in the dunlap time that we were paying more players around the league then on the 36ers team with the amont players he let go while still under contract to us becuase of the lenght of there contract and the fact if you terminate it early you still have to pay it out. I dont think Adelaide ever recovered and thats why when they change the salary cap we kept on breaking it. Then we were fined by the league for breaking the cap. We lost huge $$$ back then.

Yeah right.
Gee it was a bad decision to cut Phil (with respect nearing the end of his career) to give a kid called Brett Maher a chance.
What was Dunlap thinking!!
Didn't say it was right or wrong. Just rumours that was going around at the time. It was around that time all the shit started and the money side of things started to fall a part because of the fines we paying for being over the cap.

Sorry, my historical knowledge of the 36ers isn't great. Who are some of the players Dunlap cut?

Dunlap cut SA bred legends of the NBL such as Smyth, McKay and Ninnis as well as Blakemore and Rose at the end of the 1995 finals.
Weren't the most popular decisions at the time but he was able to recruit young stars such as Rillie, Cattalini, Trimmingham and Brunson as replacements.
He also elevated Maher and Wheeler's roles after the sackings.

Thanks Stephon.
Interesting, at the Crows Malcolm Blight did something similar and now he is called the messiah! You couldn't get much bigger in SA legend status than Mc Dermott, Andrew Jarman and McGuiness. I guess two premierships was the justification of the action and there lies the difference?

Two premierships for who? Wasn't until Dunlap bolted and left the team imploding under the inept Claxton that Smyth walked in and setup shop - the rest is history

DJM was referring to how Malcolm Blight is viewed by the South Australian Sporting public (or Crows fans) and sacking those players was justified with the premierships. Mike Dunlap didn't win any premiership and is viewed in a completely different way, had the Sixers won the premiership in 1994 (vs. North Melbourne) his legacy to Australian basketball and the Sixers would have been so different.
But in 94, Dunlap still had all the eventual sackees in the team.

The Sixers would have won the title in 94 had Davis not dislocated his shoulder in the semi final, Davis was unstoppable back then

Forgot about that dislocation - wasn't it Uthoff or someone who stopped Davis throwing a touchdown pass?

It wasn't Paul Rees at it happened in the Semi Final vs. the Melbourne Tigers, it was Dave Simmons or Dave Colbert from the Tigers
Mark David dislocated his shoulder during the Semi Final series vs. the Melbourne Tigers. It was hyper extended after he attempted to outlet the ball down the player entrance end late in the 4th quarter of game 2.
Paul Rees played for the North Melbourne Giants and subsequently won the Grand Final MVP
