Latest on the Pirates

It's looking grim for the Hunter Pirates with some see-sawing news about a sponsor coming to the rescue.

The rumours seem to be that the license could travel abroad, move to Gold Coast or re-emerge with a second team in Adelaide.

Surely stability has to be an issue? Surely you'd want to help Hunter, retain those existing 2000 fans/game, and allow the club to build up some history?

I would love to see a second NBL team out of Adelaide. They would have toplay out of a smaller venue to start, maybe the netball centre.

Think of when the Power came into the AFL, the AFL became even more popular.

Aussies love sport and they love paying their mates out when they win and their mate's team loses. I think that kind of rivalry in Adelaide with Basketball would be GREAT!

A second team in Adelaide would suck. We're struggling to support one.

Doctor E, that is because there is next to no coverage of basketball in this state. I think bringing some new life into the state will help Basketball.

I don't know if it's that grim now. There have been some movements in the staffing ranks, adding a new marketing guy and keeping Potsie and Rachel, new CEO who hasn't talked to me about his lawyers yet (bonus!) and seems pretty reasonable, and the crowds have improved a bit.

Maybe not ready for a second team, but it's been worse.

If Cowan brought in the South Dragons next year with a concession general admin season ticket of $99, I think you'd see a few people supporting both sides. If they marketed themselves really well to juniors, I can't see why they wouldn't attract some fans, but who knows if it'd be enough - perhaps not?

A 2nd nbl team could move up to the northern suburbs with Norwood, North and CEntrals. Young area, rapidly expanding population, a long way from the dome, plenty of sporting facilities, parochial supporter base etc.

This could potentially open up a new fan base to basketball.

It seems to be one of the sad things in modern, professional sport, that you can uproot and take teams wherever the "licence" is (or in other words, wherever the money is).

For an interesting take on owning a basketball team, visit here. It's a ABA team "owned" by a guy who writes for Sports Illustrated and he's basically doing it just because he can.

The Frost Heaves' slogan: "We're gonna be the bump in their road".

Send the Pirates up here to the Gold Coast! The new GC Entertainment centre would be perfect for BBall and with teh population growing as fast as it is up here Im sure we could sustain the team.

2nd team in Adelaide? bad news.

yes, do look at Port Power.. they made a massive loss last year. how long do you give them to survive?

As someone said.. we can barely keep 1 bball team going... how many sell-outs have we had this year? hmm?

Power made a loss the year they one the flag, and membership base declined year after,

for pureley entertainment and rivalary value 2 teams would rock,
but financially and sustainability the 2nd team coming in would struggle and go via the way side within 2 - 3 seasons max

If the second team can get 3000 to games and play out of the netball centre, it would make a profit.

Plus they would play on different weekends at home compared to the 36ers, so it means we could see an NBL game each week here.

You will find that a second NBL team would bring with it, FTA coverage.

You are a big statement specialist I think.

Name me one NBL side that averages 3000 fans per game and makes a profit. I'll name you a bunch that average that and make huge losses.

And while we are on it, tell us how you work out that, with the NBL playing 16 home games in 22 rounds (weeks), you get to not have a huge number of clashes with the 36ers.

And then, with two NBL teams in North Queensland (distinct isolated market) and two in Sydney (distinct isolated market) and no FTA in either, how does two NBL teams in Adelaide = FTA?

HO,

You will have to wait and see.

The Tigers average 3000 a game and will make close to $500k profit this season.

And don't forget Wednesday nights basketball does mean that more often then not, the Sixers and a new team would not clash on Saturday nights.

The NBL would not allow a clash - look at Sydney West Sydney, even back to Melbourne when it was tigers, magic and giants or just tigers and titans/giants...

They would have to play on the same weekend ie Friday night/Saturday night but NOT on the same night!

melb make a profit but isn't most of the tigers admin done by the owners office - not having run admin/office space/phone etc must be a great saving

"its not that grim yet" and "its been worse"

When?

The sport has collapsed under a weight of debt and no matter how you title it the organisation is effectively in administration. Shuffling deck chairs didn't help the Titanic resurface?

I was referring to the Sixers. The Sixers have a reasonable admin group and decent crowd which is an improvement on last year IMO.

Isolate them from the Dome mess, or sell them off to make that separation happen and they're fine.

Fine

Agree there is a reasonable group there having a go - although financially things seem to be worse than last year?

Just not sure how you differentiate them from the Dome 'mess'?

And given that the Dome is not the only problem they face, I just don't see the bright light in the tunnel many now seem to paint for BASA and basketball? Its a train.

My comment was in regards to Doctor E saying "We're struggling to support one (team)". It might not be perfect, but I think that the level of support for the club has increased in the last twelve months.

The issues are not coming from the fan/"support" side - they've come from the administrative side.

People said that the second AFL team would not work and for the first few years the Power struggled with attendances etc.

They had a deficit last year but smart business decisions will almost guarantee a profit this year with out side the box thinking.

If a second team was to surface in Adelaide which i doubt then its success will depend on how much brains the ownership group bring to the table.

Also remember that the privately owned teams currently in the NBL are run at a nice loss for tax benefits to the owners.

Comments have been made re the success (or lack of financial success) of the Power as a second AFL team in Adelaide.

The main factors for Port's success in the AFL in Adelaide relate to the level of passion held by Port Adelaide supporters and secondly the already existing 'them against us' mentality with Port and all other teams (albeit the SANFL teams or Adelaide Crows at AFL level).

This level of passion and/or angst does not exist in SA basketball in the same number of supporters as it does in football and therefore does not already provide a divided and passionate existing supporter base.

However, the flip side to the argument would be the number of 36ers supporters who would support both teams and attend both matches (if ticket prices were cheap).

I can't see a basketball 'Showdown' generating anywhere near the same level of interest as our two Adelaide AFl teams do! At least not in the early days.

DJM,

You say that the level of people for AFL compared to NBL is a lot more.

You need to remember, a second team would aim for 3000 members/crowd, which is around 10% of what the worst team (member wise) in Adelaide currently have.
