I would revise your "taken up by 3 players" to "taken up by 4 players".
Anyway, as much as people will disagree, any reasonable improvement to the team is only going to realistically come from paycuts to any of three of those four (I wouldn't dare ask Maher to take a cut) or one of them not being retained at their requested price even though they've all been contributing pretty well. And Farley is signed, so that leaves two.
Unfortunately I could really see this coming down to Dusty, but I don't know Holmes' option scenario. You would obviously prefer to keep them, but there's no money in dropping Rees/Hambour/Nash and probably Coops either.
If Dusty doesn't like the Sixers best offer, I'd go after Hinder and at least see what price you could get him for should the Pirates fall over or otherwise and field something like this.
G: Maher/Farley/Hill/x
F: Hinder/Holmes/Forman/Nash
C: y/Cooper
Then get a minimum for 10th man (I'd take a guard like Gerlach or a Bungey just because we already have that small-forward glut), and use the spare import spot for an affordable import centre (doesn't have to be a stand-out).
Or you could play Hinder as the starting C (something that Dusty is too short for) and you've got a decent 8-man rotation there and you're filling gaps with a minimum and an almost-minimum. I just can't get past the fact that our roster seems to have that pool of small forwards: Rychart, Holmes, Forman, Nash, Hambour. That's half of the squad mostly suited to one position (though the first two can hold their own at PF).
Or for those who've lost all faith, swap out Cooper for a Behrendorff (free agent). Or Vanderjagt (also a free agent - 210cm lightweight, but does well if given the court time - Friday night: Cooper 0 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, 4 blocks in 24 minutes; Vanderjagt 20 points, 8 boards, 4 assists, 3 blocks in 36.).
(Meanwhile, Dusty will get picked up by the Dragons and average 25 and 15!)
