Funny Adelaide heat from outside sinks Hunter

The Adelaide 36ERS last night shook off a week of turmoil pertaining to its parent association and an energy-sapping heatwave to burn the visiting Hunter Pirates, 111-91.

Their revenge came on the back of the team's superb form from outside the arc, the side connecting on 55% of triples in the sweltering Distinctive Homes Dome.

Captain Brett Maher, playing in his 450th NBL game and returning from an injury-related DNP the week before, was brilliant, leading all scorers with 31 points which included hitting six of eight from the deep.

The Sixers show cast also featured Willie Farley's 21 points at 67% and back-up shooting guard Brad Hill stepping off the bench for 16 points of his own; it was only appropriate that the best crowd of the season (6,149) arrived despite the sauna-like conditions to watch the team's final home game before the finals commence.

For the visiting side, Russell Hinder was professional, quietly amassing 24 points and 17 rebounds, and Geordie Cullen got to the line consistently to aid his total of 21 points, but the Pirates could not match Adelaide's firepower.

Even at half-time, the signs were ominous as Adelaide proceeded smoothly, shooting at 53% (67% 3PT) from the field to Hunter's poor 28%.

Hunter had stayed in touch for much of the opening quarter before Adelaide closed with a run of 10 unanswered points. Farley, Maher and Oscar Forman (8 points for the term on his way to 14 points) beat the Pirates from outside and gave the home side a ten-point buffer at the first break.

Hinder and Cullen had some luck in the second quarter, but for the most part Hunter were luckless from the field, managing only 15 points in total. Adelaide remained a step above, drawing scores from 8 players to win the period 24-15.

Highlights for the quarter were Hill's dunk on the break and a nice triple, as well as a passage in which Maher was knocked to the ground on offense with no foul called, picked himself up, camped in the corner to await the feed from Farley, and then buried a triple.

At half-time, Adelaide enjoyed a commanding 54-35 lead.

After the long break, however, the Pirates righted their ship and doubled their efforts. Hinder and Cullen combined for 25 points in the second half, overrunning two of Adelaide's starters in David Cooper (0-5 FG) and Jacob Holmes (1-8 FG, but 9 rebounds and a team-high 6 assists).

For every Hunter attack, Adelaide had a smooth reply. Maher was inspirational in the second half with 21 points and, at one point, Forman had hit all four of his three-point attempts.

The final quarter saw Dusty Rychart advance his quiet total and the forward finished with a diligent double-double - 14 points (75% FG) and a team-high 10 rebounds, as well as 4 assists.

Hunter had some success with the injection of giant Jason Eversteyn for quick boards and points in the paint, but there was no chance of the Pirates winning this one at the Dome.

The Sixers home by 20 points, 111-91, despite giving up more shots, more free throws, more boards and having 19 turnovers in the hot conditions. Their 51%-36% from the field was just too strong an advantage.

With the win, Adelaide gain their 19th of the season and are two games clear in third spot on the NBL ladder. Their remaining three games for the regular season are on the road in Queensland. The Pirates will see play-off action regardless of the result, holding eighth position.

Adelaide 36ers 111 (Maher 31, Farley 21, Hill 15, Rychart 14, Forman 14)
Hunter Pirates 91 (Hinder 24, Cullen 21, Helms 16, Trahair 11)

Great summary Isaac!

A good game to watch, and a terrific crowd atmosphere, despite the heat. It was hot everywhere yesterday, and the Dome's air conditioner was not the only one that was struggling!

Excellent performance by Adelaide, though we continue to give up too many offensive boards. I was somewhat disappointed that Gerlach and Madgen didn't get a run in the last quarter, with the game such a blowout. I thought that showed a lack of class on Phil Smyth's part. The referees must have also been suffering from heat stroke.

Brett Maher did nothing but ooze class: he hasn't shot the ball that purely in quite a few games. Russell Hinder should be high on Adelaide's wishlist for next season.

Great effort Adelaide, great effort Fellas!

It's a tough call to throw in Madgen and Gerlach, at this time of the season you want to have the team running at is best - obviously madgen and gerlach are very unlikely to see any minutes in the finals. I'd rather see oscar and hill out there, both in my opinion have had a lack of minutes all season (with exception of a few games obviously).

Is this playing the good trainers for real or what, so hambour sits this week, guess it dosn't really matter for him as he has hardly been used all season anyway, but if they are so adament on Gower they should have just picked him instead of hambour.

was the A/C on? i thought they would have had it on at full blast before the girls game but was just as hot when they were playing.

On the actual game, it was great and everything went very well althought i thought it was very bad how they announced brett and willie's milestones during the game.

great double header. Enjoyed the lighening/fellas game more than the odd womens games i've seen! I guess action jackson and having tracey and angela in a quality opposition added interest and nice to see the Fellas working well and cranking up towards the finals. Good team spirit evident in the mens game with sixers looking confident and working hard and enjoying themselves despite the conditions. It was obviously easier to enjoy for those who were droppng the shots..particularly good shooting under the conditions. Brett was exceptional Willie was positive and everyone else contributed. Great to see Phil and Steve far more directive. It looked like EVERYONE knows we will need to be cranking it up to go deeper into the finals campaign. And the Gower Conspiracy...fantastic goes like this gower suffers a rare form of amnesia..a little different to Jason Bourne. It seems just when everyone could no longer remember who he was 2 schemers remembered a key ingredient that was fogotten so released Gower into the team and even his team are not sure whose side he is on but as he wears their uniform they pass to him occasionally and the rest of the time he is so hungry that he is out looking to steal the ball to become part of the team. Not only that but oposition teams haven't factored him in because there is nothing out there to scout. Who Is he? Has he changed his name by deed poll? where did he come from? There are reports that on the perth road trip he offered a choice of passports as ID. An illegal import with a rubber Todd Gower mask?? The mystery deepens. It certainly opened old wounds for Mike Helms a CIA operative masquerading as a basketball player. Gower ripped past him just leaving Helms with a head and relieving helms of the ball. Slow motion exam of the tape shows agent Gower also checked Helms for a CIA tattoo behind the ear. Is this a case of establishing the Gower Identity or are we looking at the Gower Supremacy?? Go Todd ...whoever you are.

(Mod: Greatest Todd Gower Post ever.)

Maybe Madgen, Gerlach and Hambour would be better off going to College if they can still meet such criteria. May get to play some pressure and intense game time more regularly. From at least game side seen at The Dome, they get no minutes, so how are they going to improve, develop or become a true part of the playing staff and are they even considered as genuine future 36rs?

Leaves a lot of doubts in many up and coming youngsters minds (also Newley to Townsville) as to what to do, especially if they are only being treated as training fodder. Perhaps these unused players are getting a LOT of extra, special, intensive 1 on 1s??

Just a small thought out of many on how our bench are apparently used. To me the USA appears to offer a lot more for our 18s-20s who are real serious about their basketball.
