yeah i agree keefy but then again this could just be a topic to get everyone biteing and creating some inuendo
guess time will tell if theres substance i dare say there would be a mention on ozhoops as well or isaac would have responded by now
Bballer

Yes, i think this anonymous is just playing with us and stirring up some trouble by spreading rumours!!!
Keefy
Years ago
I can't see Mahersy retiring at the end of this year, he's still got a number of good year's left in him. If he went, would mean Hill has to step up BIG time like he did on the weekend, but on a more consistent basis. Having Brett around for a few more years would certainly benefit Hill's development at NBL level
HERE IT IS:
Kevin Foley has SACKED the ENTIRE BASA Board.
They have given the sixers 800k to trade with until the end of April then good bye sixers.
Paul Bell is needed to save our team. If only they had taken him up on the offer a few months ago.
Bballer
Years ago
I definately agree... i dont think Maher would just do that now when Hill is just startng to find his feet. He understands it all and he def has a good 2-3years in him and the whole team would benefit profoundly in particular Hill..I dont think he would just disapear like that
also, look for Boti to get front page with this tomorrow morning.
You heard it here first.

Not being an expert in this field so I may be wrong but how can the CEO of an organisation just sack the board? I thought to do this that an extraordinary general meeting would need to be called and a vote held before any board sackings can take place
my 2 cents worth
Years ago
No, Kevin Foley did.
I hope and pry that Paul Bell and his team can come in and save our 36ers.
You will find that if they have been trading insolvent, that a lot of directors will not be sleeping too well tonight.

all i know is that there has been no rumbling from the auditor generals department who infact are the controlling body of the BASA portfolio, infact 6 months ago BASA and the SA GOV signed and agreement waving all loan repayments which constitutes 98% of the debt for 2 years.
Thomo

my 2 cents , quote a name or something , im not saying this is BS but it would go against the last 3 months of rules set down by the AGD which included the hiring of a CEO the state gov wanted who would implament a plan to reduce the BASA debt in half by 2012

I AM OWED BEERS
FOLEY DUMPS BOARD
By GREG KELTON
17jan06
BASKETBALL management in South Australia has been forced to quit to prevent the sport's total financial collapse.
Treasurer Kevin Foley late yesterday gave the board of the Basketball Association of SA an ultimatum to quit by 11am today or face insolvency.
The board did not wait until the morning, giving Mr Foley a reply in his office in the State Administration Centre that it had accepted his tough terms.
Government sources said the board members had been "shell shocked" and "upset" by the move.
Badly in debt, the association has asked for another $1.5 million bailout from the Government.
Unless it gets the money, the future of the sport and the state's two major basketball teams - the 36ers and women's team the Fellas - is under threat by the end of this month.
Mr Foley told the board to stand aside for a government-appointed administrator - or receive no more funding.
"Without government support, basketball in SA will collapse," Mr Foley said.
"The administrators of basketball have badly let down their sport."
Financial corporate expert Bruce Carter, chairman of WorkCover and the man behind rescue bids for Balfours, Harris Scarfe and the National Wine Centre, will be put in control of restructuring basketball.
Mr Foley said many thousands of SA basketball players and their families would no longer be able to take part in the sport and the 36ers and the Fellas would not be viable if the offer was rejected.
"Liberal and Labor governments have given BASA every opportunity to get their house in order," he said.
"The situation has just got worse and enough is enough."
Mr Foley said if the board had not accepted his ultimatum it would have been "left to its own devices".
The latest problems came to a head after a meeting between Mr Foley and BASA in December last year, at which the board indicated it was looking at a loss for the current financial year of $280,000.
"They believed those losses were manageable," he said.
When Mr Foley returned from leave early this month, he was presented with an auditor's report advising the association losses for 2005-06 were more likely to be around $1.2 million.
"The report made it clear that the solvency of BASA is such that by the end of January, they could no longer trade as an organisation," he said.
Mr Foley said he was prepared to provide financial support, conditional upon BASA's board agreeing to stand aside.
"I have no confidence in their ability to administer basketball, particularly given what I consider to have been a completely inaccurate financial report in our December meeting," he said. "This is the sport's last chance to get it right."
There are more than 20,000 registered basketball players in SA, with as many as 100,000 playing in schools and competitions under the auspices of BASA and relying on BASA to help with coaching, venue payments and administration costs.
Basketball sources have blamed financial problems on mismanagement, lack of free-to-air television coverage of the 36ers, poor ticket sales, increased insurance expenses and a failure to meet sponsorship and fund-raising targets.
BASA borrowed $16 million from the Government to fund construction of its headquarters - now known as the Distinctive Homes Dome - in March, 1992.
It has struggled to repay debts and on several occasions has been forced to seek extra assistance - the latest a $2.5 million five-year package in 2002.
BASA chairperson Di Campbell last night agreed "significant change had to occur".
She said the board had been asked to remain until the end of April to facilitate restructuring.

yep , good article on it, this is what was rumoured couple months back it wont collapse its just bringining in its own board which it wanted to do 6 months ago,
well soz i doubted you 2 cents its bad but not doom and gloom new basa board new direction and they guy who they have brought in is a winner and should be able to bring it back again
again well done on the scoop even if its not as bad as made out at the start of this thread
Mismanagement. What a fucking surprise .... not!
I could not be angrier if I was confused for " my 2 cents worth " again!!! just joking mate.

sorry man u were right, does this mean no more district???
Thomo, are you kidding, not as bad as first stated!!!!
Read the article again, please.
joshMJ23
Years ago
wait im confused, so theres no more basa? ( district competition)
Thomo
Years ago
i dont think its as bad as first thought, look to the 36ers to be government run, like they wanted 6 months ago (go back and read my topic on it) look at basa to be split,
again its the BASA board sacked the 36ers board are intact as far as that article goes, the current ceo was brought in by the Gov look at him to only work with the 36ers
again guess we will know more when settles down and the t's a crossed and i dotted
Thomo
Years ago
yep read it through again, and i still believe 36ers are fine BASA is in deep shit, yes.
again look to the 36ers being government run, the writing was on the wall with basa the moment dawes was brought it
and lets be brutally honest whilst the current basa board was there nothing was going to be done
joshMJ23
Years ago
someone answer me does this mean there may be no district competition?
VC fan
Years ago
guess you were right, so what exactly does this mean, if they can sort everything out in time will it mean that the sixers ship will stay steady (didnt plan that by the way)???
36er's aren't self sufficent they need BASA leagues to support them so.... no BASA leagues no 36ers.
Thomo
Years ago
36ers can run without BASA this was floated several times around gov circles,
but yeah it would be sad to see district and grass roots get affected
so if 36ers are to be sold who would buy now considering 6 months ago gov said if they were to be sold the buyer would need to take on 70% of the debt 8mil roughly
So i ask you this where did the debt come from in the first place??? Then state again 36er's can't support themselves without BASA leagues proping them up. Why not enough sponsorship and not meeting fund raising budgets(as stated in newspaper article). The money is not there to support them.
probably because it was thought 70% of the debt stems from the sixers.
Makes sense doesn't it??
joshMJ23
Years ago
dude i swear im only 14 but this is the worst thing that has ever happened to me, ive lost basketball,my only love. i love the game so much and have just started goin places in district and now this. this has been the worst night of my life.
my 2 cents worth

Josh, You'll be right.
There are plans in place already to fix this mess.
don't worry mate, the action taken was so you can still play the game you love and watch the sixers Im sure you love too.
joshMJ23
Years ago
thanx fellas, but if i lose basketball i lose everything. it keeps me away from drugs and all that shit. im absolutely crappin myself and so are all my mates
Thomo
Years ago
i think you will find its alot of the BASA problems that cant sustain the fundaraising etc,,, im not saying the 36ers are not to blame but i think you will find its alot more on the BASA side, the reason 70% debt figure was floated was so that there would be enough money brought back in to replenish the dome debt,
so what would you do now then, sell the 36ers or let the newly appointed board create a new direction ? personally i think the sixer will be fine, gov board will work out a new direction, and i believe split the two
if 36ers where to be privetly sold i see them folding with in 2 - 3 years,
any way this is all hypathetical until we know more details of the new board their direction what their plans are for the 3 entities and what process they are going to take,
gonna be interesting to read boti's take on this tommorow
Thomo
Years ago
either way good scoop on the story 2 cents the only disapointment is you where right
joshMJ23
Years ago
so there is going to be a neew board for BASA abd the 36ers or them both combined??
Thomo
Years ago
doesnt say in the article it says the BASA board has been sacked which some of them are on the sixers board but very few,
either way i reckon it will be ok in the end the guy thats come in has saved all the companys hes been appointed to ,
its sad this has happend but i guess lets be honest how much more where the gov gonna wait on the 12mil owed when basa would spend money willynilly on other things like spending 2 mill on a centre they dont own (wayville) and borrowing the money from unley council to do it
When administrators come into a company they try to keep the company going in the right direction(nothing smart about that) but they will sell off peices of the company for the greater good. BASA leagues will be fine but they mite sell the 36er's or maybe their other franchise being the Fella's. All in all they can't keep trading at a loss, BASA makes money and the 36er's and Fella's don't.
Some hard decisions will be made!!!
Thomo
Years ago
josh i wouldnt worry, Anon is right at the end of the day grass roots and club ball will still go on whether its under basa or a newly formed entity only time will tell now,
and yep i think anon is right the two will be split but not sure who would buy the 36ers or fellas still have a feeling it will be gov supported either way,
i dont think the dome will go as its built on a pughole tip which has a high lead content meaning houseing cant be built on it for X years 2020 i heard from some where
Are you kidding that BASA make money and the 36ers don't?
On paper the only reason that BASA looks like its making money is because it charges the 36ers a million dollars a year for court hire and administration fees when in actual fact it is probably closer to 200 grand a year.
I thought this was common knowledge anyway.
I'm with Boti on this one, how can the 36ers possibly be losing money? Answer: they can't be!
Thomo
Years ago
yay anon thanks for backing me up on that, even at 4000 a game say average ticket price of $15 theres $60000 not inc boxes, food , game sponsor and more expensive seating courtside
That is how they make money. Court hire and other tangible items, 36er's can't make money if they don't get sposnsored or raise the money from crowds/fundraising. BASA if run correctly will make money, maybe not much but profit. 36er's like every other NBL club struggle to make money, just look at how many franchises have fallen over!!!
Anon 65886, no idea hey, well if only you really knew.
Tell me which part of my post is incorrect.
And I should add that BASA should not be losing money either!

Ok - is this neccesarily a bad hing? All that seems to have happened is that the major share holder has sacked an underperforming board. If they are replaced by someone who knows how to turn things around surely this is a good thing?
We have been hearing for ages that the BASA board have no idea for ages and need replacing so maybe this is what needed to happen years ago to stem the flow of money and stop the whole basketball situation geting to the stage it has now.
lets wait for the dust to settle and hopefully some solutions will be found.
Read Boti's comment in the sport section (not online) of today's paper.
If he's anything to go by (and I am one who agrees with him) this is actually the best thing that could have happened to the sport at all levels.

Will that be good? Most likely.

Basketball SA is in Administration, which from my understanding, the major creditor (in this case the Government as they are owed the most) appoint someone of their choosing to run the company in order for the debt to be repaid, or restructure the company with a view to trading out of debt.
The administrator could decide that it is physically impossible to trade out of debt, at which time the company becomes insolvent, and is wound up (thats when you get things like HIH, One.Tel etc).
Administration means at the customer end, it is business as usual (games are scheduled and played, 36ers and Fellas keep playing, and get paid).
I think the Government has brought in an excellent team, and I wouldnt be worried. I feel sorry for Mike Daws, walked in to this not even 3 months ago.

Get basketball back on free to air TV, that will increase the interest level in the sport. Ok so we get one game of womens leage on TV a week, but lets put it on free to air TV instead of some of the other sports like Golf, Tennis (unless an aussie is playing), and other sports that are much more interesting to watch live.
This might just increase basketballs profile, more people start playing, more subs, more money from the associations, and the sport will be high profile again.
Basketball was very high profile back when it was on TV, not all people can afford Pay TV i know i cant.
Also maybe if the county associations had more to do with BASA the sport would be a lot better financially, as most country associations are doing quite well (note I did say most)
