it is so you can warm up, up (i believe you can get your game commissioner to change it) per the by laws of the aba
as a player that 3 minutes is good to just get moving again after standing still while the anthem is playing. It should stay
remove the people with no national pride. They serve no purpose. (yes, that's you smooth pockets).

get moving again after standing still????? r u serious??
perhaps u should consider lawn bowls if ur tired old body cant hack the pace..
also consider the crowd!! im sure they are tired of watching u do lay ups for 20mins!!
troy different strokes for different folks or different competitions
nbl goes direct from holding clock at one minute; national anthem; into coaches final address to players.
abl has national anthem at 3 mins then the players can go back to lay ups for the final few minutes. for bench players etc it is at least a time for them to touch the ball for others its a time to get their nerves etc under control. some might tighten up mentally or physically with nerves.
international games like olympics, world championships etc, there is no clock stopping as the national anthem is only played at the medal presentation and therefore the only anthem played is of the gold medal country. the players are brought together with six minutes on the clock - clock continues to run - the teams met mid court and exchange cultural gifts - they then go back to warmups with about 3 minutes on the clock they are brought to the benches with a minute to go.
as stated before - IMO it is part of the aba by-laws that the home team can chose to have the national anthem 60seconds before tip off. it is a club by club decision like having 10 or 15 minute half times.
or by allowing the home team to sit closest to their change rooms. these things are negotiable if both teams are aware, the referees and scoretable/stats/announcer are informed.
approach your club's game commissioner and ask that the time be reduced. other than that live with it - everyone else seems to survive.
