Basketball Courts - Same old, same old

I see Nunawading have got some commitments from both sides of government to extend their courts. Absolutely brilliant for them and hats off to everyone that has worked on this. The pollies will swoop in to take the glory. I hope those that have gone after this for years are duly rewarded.

On a similar note, and I will keep this nice, our kids in the area of Moonee Valley, have no basketball stadium and nothing has built in 30 years. We don't need an extension.....we just need our first stadium.

Sadly, courts tend to get built with political vote gathering (see: pork barrelling) rather than where they are immediately required.

Our area, a safe Labor seat for many moons has continually missed out on State and Federal money for this reason. If anyone tells you differently, they are absolute liars. To add to this, we have a local council that wants to paint everything in rainbows and regularly attracts councillors from the bottom of the gene pool.

What is the answer going forward for areas like ours. Do we have to build private facilities whilst those communities in marginal seats swim in the courts?

You are a safe seat. Therein lies the problem. Parties are only for the people if they need the vote.

Answer. Make is a non safe seat and you will have a chance.

I love your thinking. Hard to do when the Libs sometimes don't even put up a candidate.

That's really only one part of the dilemma.

Membership numbers/number of voters
Priority for the sport in the state
Lobbying with both major parties
Funding at all 3 levels of Government
and lastly patience.

Nunawading have been working on this funding for over a decade. Serious lobbying, member engagement, BV support etc.

Basketball venues are extremely expensive in comparison to outdoor sports. Always up against it, and in every state there are complaints of underfunding and a lack of the necessary courts to continue to support the growth of the game.

Wow, that escalated quickly.
Another way is to get the local MPs or any local politician kids to play basketball.
From memory the rumour was that Chris Pines kids played for Norwood, suddenly millions were given in grants to build the ARC.

Sorry Dr Dre. not sure who you are or what beef you have with me. Obviously I have rubbed you up the wrong way at some point. As for becoming a politician (or a bully) as you call it, I am absolutely one for putting up my hand in these situations and not just yelling from the cheap seats. I have sat down with every local politician, and the sporting politicians at a state and federal level, got a commitment from the Melbourne Showgrounds for a temporary solution which was poo-pooed by the local member and have advocated from many different angles. It staggers me to think the time I would have put into this. Given I won't directly benefit from them being built, and my kids will be well out of juniors by the time it does happen, I would think that my advocacy is driven by a want to get my sport what it truly deserves. Are Church Halls and 40 year old high school courts all we can do in this area. If I have to be a 'whinging little b*tch' to get what we are owed, well I am happy to take on that role. If we had more people advocating for this over the years, we wouldn't be in the hole we are in now.
Thank you for allowing me to explain my position further.

Owed, interesting word. Hard to quantify

Agree Sebastian. 'Owed' probably wrong choice of word. 'Needed' probably better. Just hard to fathom that a community can go so long without any new facilities. I would take a 2-court stadium at the moment. Although 10 courts wouldn't scratch the surface.

Agreed it would be great to have new courts in Moonee Valley

Most courts around Melbourne have been upgraded in recent decades/years- a few examples from not too far away from Moonee Valley- Altona, Keilor, Broady. Some of those are in safe seats too, so I'm not sure that's the full answer

Keep on fighting though
