NBL1 West - 2025 Season

So no real news or gossip, so I thought I would start my way too early predictions and roster line ups for the Women.

Feel free to add or correct.

NBL 1 Women Rankings

1) Hawks - McCarthy, Clark, Dennis, Amy Jacobs, Grace Stone, Fowler, Mckay. A huge recruiting offseason for the team bringing in Fowler and bringing home Mckay to form a huge frontline this season. Clark and Stone the slashing wing scorers. Import spot up their sleeves is this the year for the Hawks.

2) Flames – Deegan, Cibba, Sharp, Whittle, Pineau. An all-star starting 5 with a really underrated Pineau doing the hard work inside. Whittle and Sharp the best wing combo in the league and add to that the playmaking in Cibba and college returnee Deegan.

3) Magic – Palmer, Milo, CJ Jacobs, Mckenna Dale, Berg, Gowland. Small line up so far with the question that an import 5 would be rounding out this roster. Scoring won't be the issue with this group. Deep vet bench.

4) Cougars – Williams, Gorman, Raber, Turnour-McCarty, Mortensen is a great 5. Mortensen dominated last time in the league, is Jessie returning? Import spot to be filled.

5) Tigers – Kelly, Pirini, Eva Langton, Ajulu Thatha, Aokuso. Aokuso is a massive massive signing. Some new faces this year and Waite is a huge loss, do they have the guard play to compete.

6) Senators – Forster, Barr, Waite, Hoycard, Burton. Hoycard back gives them a big scoring boost and the addition of Waite allows her to slide the 3 at times. It’s a big team and Forster was near league MVP last season. Two import spots available.

7) Lightning – Sarah Allen, Morrell, Lubke, Abbie Hall. Lightning seam to be collecting all the bigs in the league. Rumours of Sowah to round out this team, she dominates at the NBL1 level.

8) Wolves – Berberabe, Smith, not much news coming out. Normally this is all over the socials. Emma Clarke possible return? I know I am missing the starting big signing.

9) Eagles – Sears, Morrison, talk of 4 recruits coming in. Two import spots to fill.

10) Suns – Berry, Murphy, Kuir Gayo. Murphy is a solid double double machine. Some rumours of Maley heading that way if WNBA doesn't work.

11) Redbacks – Chou, Hartree, Doran, Brossman. Redbacks went early and re-signed Chou and brought in forward Brossman. A piece away from being a competitive team.

12) Giants, pretty quiet on the player announcement space, Pettit a solid vet pick up.

13) Slammers – Mykea Gray, Palmer, fitch, Bayless. Great to have Skye Palmer return, 2nd import coming in.

Surely Gorman and Mortensen are both restricted for Cockburn?

Pirini has signed over east, I believe.

Only two weeks to go until the season kicks off! Do we have any early predictions for the men's competition so far? It seems like a few import players are still yet to be confirmed, which could definitely shake things up. Curious to hear what everyone's thinking—who’s looking strong, and which teams might surprise us this year?

How Men's NBL1 West is shaping up

There's top level NBL talent on board from the Perth Wildcats and beyond, there's some high quality imports and a strong group of returning players setting the stage for a mouth watering 2025 Men's NBL1 West season.

Fresh off being part of the 2024/25 NBL season, Emmett Naar, Isaac White, Elijah Pepper and Todd Withers have signed up for the 2025 NBL1 West season.

Former NBL Grand Final MVP Terrico White has also joined the Eastern Suns with Verle Williams Jr, Akeem Springs, Kortland Martin, Matthew Lang, Max Rice, Trey Crawford, Isaiah Lewis, Sam Freeman, Tyreese Davis, Taeshon Cherry, Calvin Whipple, Jamal Poplar, Jonah Underwood, Davin Miller and Jaden Stanley-Williams among the other new arrivals.

Mitch Clarke, Lochlan Cummings, Connor Mincherton, Jarrad Anastasio, Rowan Mackenzie, Corey Shervill and Hamish Warden are all familiar faces coming back to the league after being away whether through injury or playing elsewhere.

Ioannis Dimakopoulos, Damon Ballantyne, Shaun Stewart, Marshall Nelson, Lewis Thomas, Kyle Armour, Tevin Jackson, Seva Chan and Cooper Lowe also remain in the league but will be at new clubs in 2025.

The Mandurah Magic made history last year with a remarkable run not only to make a Grand Final for the first time, but to the win the club's first ever championship under the guidance of coach Mark Utley.

Keeping that group together was always going to be a challenge for the Magic and superstar import pair Joel Murray and Michael Durr won't be back, and nor will be Jarrod Molnar.

However, the majority of the rest of that championship group will be back including Julian Pesava, captain Chad Miegel, Lachlan Bertram and Jermaine Malie.

There are some other signings that coach Utley will be hoping come off just as well as some of those speculative picks in 2024 did including bringing across Victorian Nick Woodall, bringing down Cooper Lowe who he coached at the Eastern Suns, and welcoming Hamish Warden on his return to WA.

There are big shoes to fill with the imports from last season, but Mandurah have brought in Jahcoree Ealy and Sam Freeman for their championship defence.

The Willetton Tigers were so close to a championship breakthrough last season having beat Rockingham and Geraldton on the way to the Grand Final, and then being on top until the Magic produced a huge fightback to snatch the trophy from them.

The Tigers have had to sit without all off-season but there is every reason to suggest that coach Adam Nener again has a team at his disposal that will be right in contention.

Veteran trio Michael Vigor, Andrew Black and Damien Scott are once again on deck while 310-game veteran Kyle Armour makes his return to Willetton to join his former teammates once more.

Willetton has lost important players from last year's Grand Final run including Michael Dupree, Marshall Nelson and Deng Gak, but the new signings look impressive including import pair Tyreese Davis and Taeshon Cherry.

The Joondalup Wolves heartbreakingly missed a second straight Grand Final appearance by losing a nail-biting preliminary final at home to the Mandurah Magic last season, but there's every reason to expect the Wolfpack to contend again in 2025.

After a spirited run into the 2023 Grand Final, the Wolves finished second last season with a 16-6 record before beating the Willetton Tigers in the qualifying final but then losing at home in that preliminary final to Mandurah.

A lot of that core group under coach David Morrell is back again in 2025 including CJ Turnage, Caleb Davis, Ethan Elliott, Jordan Wellsteed and Gabe Chadinha.

The Wolves will also be boosted with the addition of the versatile Damon Ballantyne who had a breakout 2024 season with the Goldfields Giants along with new import Joey Baker along with Adili Kuerben.

It would have been a long summer for the Geraldton Buccaneers after they had a dominant regular season in 2024 finishing with a 20-2 record to be four games clear in top spot before being stunned at home in the preliminary final by the Willetton Tigers.

The majority of that core group including Liam Hunt, Mat Wundenberg, Aaron Ralph, Nik DeSantis, Johny Narkle and Joshua Keyes.

Geraldton has also added Verle Williams Jr who has racked up plenty of experience since first coming to Australia in rival NBL1 conferences with Akeem Springs on board as the second import.

The Goldfields Giants reached the semi finals last season and now with Lennon Smartt appointed the permanent head coach, they will be looking to build on that with the added excitement of their new home court being available to start 2025.

While Goldfields has lost some experience and quality through Mayo Malek, Randy Bell, Kon Anguik and Damon Ballantyne, the additions of former Mandurah and Geraldton point guard Shaun Stewart, NBL development player at Melbourne United Joshua Duach and returning college star Michael Jok are impressive.

It's been a rocky road for the Rockingham Flames since winning the NBL1 West and National Championship in 2022 with a top place finish in 2023 but just falling short of the Grand Final and also losing in the decider at the National Finals.

Then in 2024, the Flames started on fire winning their first five games, but then lost nine of the next 14 in the absence of Devondrick Walker before winning the last three matches which saw them finish at 13-9 and qualify for finals from seventh position.

The Flames then took care of the East Perth Eagles in the elimination final but then were blown away by former championship star Marshall Nelson and the Willetton Tigers in the semi finals.

Ryan Petrik remains coach after another WNBL finals campaign with the Perth Lynx but there has been significant player turnover coming into the 2025 season.

There will be no Walker, Jeremy Combs, Jono Janssen or Gorjok Gak, but the signings are impressive headed up by NBL guards Emmett Naar and Isaac White fresh off a season together at the Brisbane Bullets on the back of leading the Mackay Meteors to an NBL1 North championship.

Tevin Jackson has also made the move from the Perth Redbacks to join Rockingham while the Flames have brought in new import Jervon Pressley to a group still featuring captain Justin Beard, former captain Ryan Godfrey, Travis Durnin and the returning Callum Beard.

The East Perth Eagles broke through for their first finals appearance last year since winning the championship in 2014 and now coach Carl Filpo will look to take them up another level again in 2025.

While they won't have the services of NBL pair Sunday Dech and David Okwera and with Sebit Reath and Lukas Milner having departed, the additions look exciting for the Eagles and are all on deck ready for the start of the season.

East Perth has a readymade recruit with the return of Jarrad Anastasio from a knee injury while size won't be an issue with the recruitment also of 7'2 giant Ioannis Dimakopoulos.

The Eagles have signed import pair Max Rice and Matthew Lang as well, have brought in Chier Maker, and with the retention of Taylor Young, Shareef Watson, Lee Roberts and Nic Filpo, and it's an imposing looking East Perth group.

The Warwick Senators looked capable of big things at times in 2024 led by Todd Withers and Michael Harris, but in the end they were likely missing that one final piece. That would have been Zac Gattorna, who never ended up playing due to a back injury.

While Harris won't be back in coach Andrew Cooper's second season in 2025, Withers will return fresh off being an injury replacement import at the Perth Wildcats in NBL25.

His 'Cats teammate Elijah Pepper will join him as a hot shooting threat at the Senators while multiple championship winning point guard Mitch Clarke returns to the NBL1 West, and not to the Perry Lakes Hawks but to the Senators.

Championship captain Cody Ellis is back for another season at Warwick along with proven commodities Jay Thwaites, George Pearl, Tyler Shand and Brody England with Cooper Creek, the son of Giants legend Wayne, joining the Senators on his return from college.

The Perry Lakes Hawks narrowly missed the finals in 2024 with a 9-13 record to be in ninth position in the first season of coach Damian Barr.

The Hawks aren't used to not being part of the post-season action so will be looking to change that in 2025 with a changeover in their two imports.

Replacing Dequan Abrom and Jaylen Key are Jaden Stanley-Williams and Davin Miller while they have recruited 284-game veteran Seva Chan from Cockburn Cougars where Barr was previously his assistant coach.

The Lakeside Lightning at times in 2024 looked capable of beating anybody including scoring wins over finals bound teams Goldfields, Mandurah, Rockingham, Joondalup and Warwick, but the consistency wasn’t there and they finished 10th at 8-14.

Coach Mike Malat will now attempt to bridge that gap between their best and worst in 2025 and bringing back Lakeside products Rowan Mackenzie and Corey Shervill is certainly going to help that cause.

New faces for the Lightning also include AJ Wilson, Isaiah Lewis, Finley Payne, Michael Chigumbu and Trey Crawford while Josh Davey, Ben Lee, Michael Garbellini and Tom Parkinson are all back on board to provide that stability for the Lightning.

The biggest moves all off-season have been made at the Kalamunda Eastern Suns with coach Aaron Trahair looking to bring success to the hills for the first time.

The Suns did start to come together in the back end of last season winning six of the last 12 games having lost nine of the first 10 even though they did still miss out on the finals at 7-15.

There have been plenty of changes coming into 2025 headed up by the recruitment of former Perth Wildcats star and 2019 NBL Grand Final MVP Terrico White in one of the biggest ever NBL1 West signings.

It doesn't stop there for the Eastern Suns with Marshall Nelson and Travis Fee both making the move from Willetton's Grand Final team last season while Lewis Thomas gives them size and experience up front as does Joel Vaiangina.

Denzel Jackson also joins from the Perth Redbacks while Seb Salinas and Brendan Dinardo are among the players committed to return to help keep the ship running smoothly.

The South West Slammers had their moments in the 2024 season with six victories including beating both Grand Finalists, Willetton and Mandurah, in a three-game winning run late in the piece.

Buay Tuach was the star of that team averaging 23.7 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists, and while he won't be returning in 2025, there are some impressive additions the Slammers have made.

They have added import pair Calvin Whipple and Jamal Poplar that they will be looking for big things from while looking for continued strong contributions from Manny Wugol, Pharell Keats, Devan Craig, Jack Flynn and Cory Richardson.

The Cockburn Cougars are the team with the greatest turnover coming into 2025 with the loss of legendary captain Gavin Field, vice-captain Seva Chan and experienced guard Kyle Armour along with former NBL championship winner Rhys Vague.

Second-year coach Mark Clayden will now get to put his full stamp on the Cougars with a group that he's fully put together including the additions of new import Kortland Martin.

The departure of the experienced brigade will provide the chance for Charlie Dimmock, Josh Hunt, Austin Crowe-St Jack, Riley Eves, Riley Bensemann and Nathan Pond to all take on greater responsibility.

Nothing went right for the Perth Redbacks last season culminating in just five wins and a bottom place finish, but injuries along the way to key players Joe Cook-Green, Tevin Jackson, Jacob Formosa and Cousteau Kyle didn't help the cause.

Coach Charles Nix remains at the helm for the 2025 season charged with putting the Redbacks back in the finals mix and there has been plenty of turnover including the departures of Tevin and Denzel Jackson, Ioannis Dimakopoulos, Miles Gibson and Maris Colton.

Retaining the services of Cook-Green is a massive step for the Redbacks, though, while they have added new import Jonah Underwood while strengthening the back court with Lochlan Cummings coming back to the NBL1 West and Connor Mincherton back after a year off playing.

Great first round of games last night! The Rocko NBL boys looked tough — but will they even be around come finals? Jules seemed like the only one showing heart for Magic, while Willo looked solid. Lakeside really struggled without Rowan. Is his injury serious? He tweaked it early, around the 3-4 minute mark, and you could see him grimace — not sure why he went back out there. That felt like a poor decision. Hopefully he's not done for the season. And how about Joondalup dropping one to the Redbacks? Didn’t see that coming!

Doesn't sound like he's expected to be back this year.

Anneli Maley easing herself into the season with 29 points, 30 rebounds, 10 assists.
"Going out with a bang" might be more accurate than "easing herself in."

Elijah Pepper with 50 for Warwick tonight, despite sitting down with almost five minutes remaining.

MEN'S POWER RANKINGS - After Round 1

1. ROCKINGHAM FLAMES
The additions of NBL pair Emmett Naar and Isaac White, along with impressive big man Jervon Pressley, elevate the Flames to the #1 ranking. Then add stalwarts Ryan Godfrey and the Beard brothers, plus ex-Redbacks veteran Tevin Jackson, and you have a well balanced team capable of winning their 2nd-ever Championship. The probable season loss of Travis Durnin is a setback, but this didn't show in their easy away win over the Eagles, where they led by as many as 30 points, and didn't yet have Pressley in the line-up.

2. WARWICK SENATORS
Predictable start to the season with a thumping of the Lightning. Pepper is an upgrade on Harris while the addition of Clarke and Creek gives them depth. Following his 50-point haul against Lakeside, Pepper must be favourite to be the league's leading scorer this year. If there are any shortcomings with this team, it's the lack of an inside presence - instead they have a bunch of outside-shooting forwards. And this showed on the weekend when they were out-rebounded by the Lightning, despite winning by 38.

3. JOONDALUP WOLVES
Would have been ranked higher if they didn't lose to the Redbacks on opening night. We'll put that down as round one blues, and they quickly bounced back the next night with a close win over fellow contenders, the Buccaneers. Damon Ballantyne could be the pick-up of the year and would be starting on any other team in the league. On a negative, there are question marks over import Joey Baker who could only manage 16 points from his first 2 games.

4. GERALDTON BUCCANEERS
A tough road-trip to start the season, but they would be happy with the 1-1 split against two teams with plenty of firepower. Import Akeem Springs looks impressive, and his 53 points over the course of the weekend would have brought smiles to the Buccs' recruiters. Almost everyone else returns to a team that went 20-2 last year, including Josh Keys and Johnny Narkle, plus they have also added veteran journeyman Verle Williams. Won't be surprised if they move higher up the rankings.

5. GOLDFIELDS GIANTS
The Giants only finished percentage outside of the top-4 last year, eventually being knocked out in the playoffs by the Magic. To build on that, their off-season recruiting has been as good as any team, particularly with the addition of championship-winning import Shaun Stewart, and the return of 2024 All-Star De-Sean Parsons. Then add dynamic swingmen Michael Jok and Josh Duach, along with former Slammers big man Leigh Rickwood-Pitt, and you have a team with a starting-5 as good as any in the league. And their firepower was on full show on the weekend in their 40-point demolition of the Cougars, with Stewart, Parsons, Jok and Duach combining for 93 points.

6. WILLETTON TIGERS
Despite making a Grand Final last year, the Tigers are an ageing team. They finished the regular season in 3rd in 2024 but I expect them to drop another 2-3 places. The experienced Michael Vigor and Damien Scott are back, and they have a solid core of locals, particularly Tom Gerovich and Roosevelt Williams. In addition, imports Davis and Cherry look good, and veteran Kyle Armour returns. But effectively those latter three just replace Marshall Nelson, Michael Dupree and Deng Gak, so whether that is an upgrade is debatable. They beat the Magic by 14 in the Grand Final rematch last week, but Mandurah are shadow of 2024, so that was not a great form guide for Willeton.

7. KALAMUNDA EASTERN SUNS
The Suns have brought in 2 big names in former Perth Wildcat Terico White, and perennial top-10 player Marshall Nelson. And topped that off with veteran big men Lewis Thomas and Joel Vaiangina. You then add season veterans Rob Huntington, Seb Salinas, Brendan Dinardo and Reece Maxwell, and they have the makings of a top-8 team. But like the Tigers, this is another ageing team. And we saw a glimpse of this with their last quarter fade out against the Buccs on Sunday. Also doesn't help that White seems a shadow of his former self. I think they will win enough games to sneak into the top-8, but will exit the playoffs quickly.

8. MANDURAH MAGIC
Don't expect the same fairytale story with the 2025 Magic as we saw last year. After losing the 2024 league MVP, along with one of the top-3 centres in the league, you already start towards the back of the pack. The new imports look okay, as does solid recruit Hamish Warden, but if you are relying on injury-prone veteran Julian Pesava to win you games, you are in for long season. If they can get good returns from their imports, they could finish middle-of-the-standings. But if they don't, they will miss the playoffs altogether, which would be a big fall from grace.

9. PERTH REDBACKS
The Redbacks finished last in 2024, and have lost more players in the offseason than they have gained. So why have I picked them to finish higher up the ladder?? Well their 2024 team was a lot better on paper that what the win/loss record showed. And I don't expect that to happen 2 years in a row. And they showed their potential with an upset win over the Wolves on Friday night. Yes, they will live and die off the shooting of Joe Cook-Green and Lochy Cummings, but if both of them stay healthy, they will win 8-9 games. But that is the key word - healthy. Cook-Green missed half a season last year, and that hurt them big time. But they have two scorers this time.

10. PERRY LAKES HAWKS
Not many changes for the Hawks in the offseason. Veteran Seva Chan joins Perry Lakes while their two 2024 imports are replaced by two new imports in Jaden Stanley-Williams and Davin Miller. That said, Chan and Miller played a combined 29 minutes in their 1-point win over Lakeside (also an underwhelming team) - not a good sign. They finished with 9 wins in 2024 and missed the playoffs by 2 games. And I expect a similar result in 2025. One thing I will give the Hawks credit for, and that is the depth of their 2nd-string players, which is probably the best and deepest in the league. Hence why they have been so successful in D-league over the past few years.

11. LAKESIDE LIGHTNING
Rowan Mackenzie and Corey Shervill return to Lakeside, and picking up good Aussie talent cannot be underestimated in this league. However a major injury to Mackenzie in round one doesn't bode well for the Lightning, and would have contributed to their 0-2 start to the season. Shervill and reliable power forward Josh Davey were their two best players in the losses, which doesn't say much for new imports AJ Wilson and Isaiah Lewis who could only average a combined 27ppg over the weekend. Not a good start for Lakeside, and the longer that Mackenzie is out, the less chance they have of finishing in the top-8.

12. EAST PERTH EAGLES
Sunday Dech, David Okwera, Sebit Reath and Lukas Milner are big losses for an Eagles team that finished 2024 in 6th with a 13-9 record. New imports Matthew Lang and Max Rice have good resumes, but sometimes that doesn't equate to good numbers in our strong Australian leagues. Getting spanked by an understrength Flames wasn't a good start. Nor was getting a combined 4 points out of your two centres, Lee Roberts and Ioannis Dimakopoulos. And without trying to sound too critical, if you are starting Nic Filpo then you are probably not a top-8 team.

13. COCKBURN COUGARS
The Cougars started 2024 in a not-so-good way, sending an import home early in the season. And 2025 has not started off much better. Firstly they saw the departure of Gavin Field, Seva Chan, Kyle Armour and Rhys Vague, then they sent an import home before the season had even started, and then topped that off by being belted by the Giants by 40 on Kalgoorlie's impressive new show court. In the offseason they did counter with bringing in former Big-V scoring machine Kortland Martin, but the 5-9" Martin is going to struggle with the big NBL1 West guards, and we saw this against the talented Giants backcourt on Saturday night. Another long season for the Cougars.

14. SOUTH WEST SLAMMERS
Losing Buay Tuach is not a great result for the Slammers. If you were to pick any team that relied on one player more than any other during the 2024 season, it was the Slammers. He has big shoes to fill, and if round one is any indication, his replacement - Calvin Whipple - could be the first import on the chopping block. The other Slammers import, Jamal Poplar, looks solid, but he will only help them win a game or two. The rest of the team is basically the equivalent of a good D-league team.

Just heard from a Lakeside coach Rowan has a Tear 3 Hammy - not sure if they need surgery yet. Sounds like he will miss most of the season- Big blow for Laskeside and Rowan!
