SEJBT grading needs a good look at

Grading for the SEJBT tournament needs a good over haul in my opinion. We had a team entered in U16 B grade and came up against VJBL 1 and VC teams....and now those same teams are playing in the grand final.

I felt sorry for the Casey 16.4 team who are graded in VJBL 4 having to play against those teams....credit to the coaches and kids for not giving up and still scoring on them. My childs team did ok in Pool A which was definitely the easier pool but man I feel sorry for that 4s team, especially when those VJL 1 and VC teams knew full well there main players who were at the U16 combine were going to come back on Sunday and play for those teams.

Goes to show which clubs value tournament wins and coaches ego trips over anything else.

important for communication pre grading - I usually email tournament admins (not specifically this tourney) and say what strength team we are putting in and my thoughts re around where we'll be at for the carnival - but at the end of the day it's their call. You could email your thoughts to them. However always seems to be someone after easy silverware. Having said that - sometimes if the team has been taking a hit regularly - something like this can improve morale.

The main goal of most Tournament Grading process is not to create even Pools.

Teams that enter are seeded according to the compositon of the players that register for the team.

The seedings then dictate what teams get allocated to what Pools.

Each Pool will have a spread of teams. The higher seeded teams will have an easier path to finals series rounds. The fixtures are structured so that the highest seeded teams in each pool have the easiest path to the SF matches.

If one looks very closely at VJBL, a similar thing happens.
In a 10 team VJBL grade, you usually see two really strong teams, six middling teams, and two weak teams. Unless something odd happens, the two strong teams are a shoe in to make the finals. The six middling team all have a decent crack at making the finals. And the bottom two teams are there just to make up the numbers.

The ultimate goal of grading is never to create even grades where every team has a nearly equal chance of beating every other team.
