SEM 25/26

Overall a good season. I probably wouldn't change to much, obviously a few areas need strengthening. If Walton junior can stay fit I’d keep, never been a great fan of Hurt and for his asking price I’d let go, just to bad on D to win games that matter. Wieskamp I’d keep depending on dollars as a bench player. I’d keep Ayre ahead of Sobey, Majok, Kenyon and Vadonavic probably let go. Rest are under contract.
Walton jnr, Ayre,
Import, Foxwell
Wieskamp, ? Possibly Kenyon
?, ?
Hunter, I’d like Lee, then remove the import two guard.
If Lewis doesn’t get drafted, he’d be a good return. I think SEM just got to be tougher.
Probably so far away from what SEM think but my thoughts.

As I understand it:

Under contract: Sobey (team option), Hunter, Glover, Foxwell, Lewis

FA's: Hurt, Walton, Wieskamp, Kenyon, Ayre, Vodanovich, Majok

Solid group of local role players. Retaining Hurt the goal.

I agree with how the season started to where they finished they did a great job
For me I would keep Walton & Sobey , probably find someone else instead of Weiskamp & keep Hurt
Don't see Arye staying & I would keep Kenyon
SEM was always short of bigs, this is what I would like to see

Walton/ Foxwell
Sobey/ Glover / Rosendale
Import/ Kenyon
Hurt/ Aussie 4 ( Moller ?)
Hunter/ Aussie 5

A big next star in the 4 or 5 if they can’t get locals

I believe King was keen on Moller to stay after his rehab, not certain what happened there, always been a favourite of mine. I'd chase Doolittle, probably cost you less and can play three or four.

I would be looking for three new imports. The three of them didn't play at anywhere near the required standard in their most important game of the year. Walton looked like he couldn’t care less, Hurt is a defensive disaster and Weiskamp really isn’t that good. He does play hard and it probably depends on money he wants. If it wasn’t for Sobey, Glover and Foxwell just making enough iso baskets to keep some scoring happening, they really struggled to score consistently. Also need an upgrade on Hunter. He is foul prone and just doesn’t score enough points. Coach is probably safe, but for a so called defensive guy, they need to stop opponents scoring so easily.

coach deserves more credit for this year, cause roster is poor. Hurt, 1 rebound over what 60 minutes in games 2 and 3? he cant defend anyone or any action and he cant rebound. Hopefully coach gets a license to put together a team HE wants, not the one he took over.

It's a strange, media and some punters think Hurt is a gun and others like me don’t. Imo he’s probably not going to win you big finals game, similar to Pinder imo.

The NBL media machine used to do the same with Daniel Johnson but at least he was a better player than Hurt.

I would get 3 new imports.

Hurt can be a gun when the opposition lets him be, but otherwise goes missing on offense and is the Invisible Man on defense.

Wieskamp is just too inconsistent in his scoring, even if he's consistent in his effort and plays at both ends. Again, a gun when allowed to be.

Walton has been very good, but ... at least he works his ass off to create baskets.

None of those three imports should be offered contracts for next season.

Seems to be a bit of a curse with SEM always ending up with mediocre imports. At least they used to have the excuse Creek was eating up a lot of money, not this season though.

Roberson and Sykes were better than mediocre

could see that happening, MU will surely have to move on from at least one of Loe and Lee

Roberson and Munford were good.

Hurt, Walton, Wieskamp, Williams, Browne, Cummings, Nader, Kell, Ashley, Sykes, Wesley, Benson not so much.

Most of those imports are ordinary. Kell is the only one I call A grade. Then again they have never had an A grade coach either

Hurt is a poor defender but one of the best scorers going around.

Kell was average at SEM though.

24 games - 12.5p, 3.8r, 2.8a, 38% FG (35.5% 3p)

I dare say the main reason he got a contract from the Sixers was because Craig Simpson was with him at SEM.

Wieskamp was very very lucky not to be cut early in the season, billed as a shooter but struggled big time.
Walton just had too many soft tissue injuries to consider getting him back. And would have been on decent coin as well.
Hurt is what he is, an elite scorer, questionable defender. Have honestly never seen anyone fall over as much, every time he shot it he was on the ground. But to keep some consistency would definitely bring him back, depends on his price tag. I've already called it that Sydney will go after him even though he makes no huge sense roster wise, they'll just want to sign the biggest free agent as usual, ala Hogg.
Ayre really needs an opportunity somewhere, and I think there'll be a market for sure. Same with Kenyon, both would be good depth pieces on the bench somewhere.
Although he did have some flashbacks, Sobey was under control for first time in ages so would pick up that option.
Would look at a combo guard as import, Foxwell a great sparkplug and rotate at the point. Someone like an Ian Clark.
Think they either go with a defensive wing or big to fit their system. Hunter was very solid but if he got into foul trouble they didn't have anyone to replace on defensive end.
So really would only replace Wieskamp and Walton from main rotation. I think the Hurt to Tassie rumours are pretty well done. He really only does one thing and score, but he does it really well most of the time.

I don't think Hurt will get another contract in the NBL, he just got exposed badly in the SF.

Poor coaching by King. Defence a joke. Totally exposed and thrashed in the decider. No Plan B. Must be sacked surely.
