Brondello extended to LA 2028

Fresh from a career-best year in 2024, Sandy Brondello has recommitted to coaching the Seven Consulting Opals through to the Los Angeles Olympics.

Last August, Brondello guided Australia to a bronze medal in Paris, returning the Opals to the Olympic podium for the first time in 12 years, then on return to the WNBA was the mastermind of New York Liberty's inaugural championship in October.

...

Paul Goriss has been appointed Associate Head Coach, leading the program when Brondello has WNBA commitments, with the coaching panel also featuring Shannon Seebohm, Cheryl Chambers, Kristi Harrower and Renae Garlepp.

Goriss as Associate HC is mind boggling! Caps were noticeably better once Hurst appeared on the scene.

Goriss hasn't stopped failing upwards since his referee scandal.

He certainly got off lightly.

Maybe he's more available, or thinks more strategically (international-level), or has something on the decision-makers ...

Nfi.

You might be right. He has been known to obtain video footage of things to use to his advantage ...

Given how many major events Sandy has played or coached at for Australia, this is starting to put her up in Lindsay Gaze kind of territory.

I haven't always agreed with her coaching style, but I respect her contribution.

The next World Cup is now only 18 months away. Have to be a few questions marks about some of the more senior players making that team.

We are about to go through a transition, much like the Boomers have started going through.

Some of the older players would help the process by retiring early rather than hanging around until eventually they're not selected.

All should be around for the 2026 WC, none of the vets in 2028.

In 2026.
IMO, the roster might look like...

PG Melbourne(24)
PG 1 of Reid(30), Rocci(28) or Heal(25)
CG Whitcomb(38)
CG Swain(23)
SG Borlase(22)
SF Talbot(32)
SF/PF Allen(34)
PF/C Smith(30)
C/PF Magbegor(27)
C/PF George(37), maybe Aokuso(28)
C Tolo(37), maybe Aokuso(28)

+ 1 other, probably a *forward/guard looking at the above.

Amoore-PG
Loughridge-PG
Ellis-PG
Shelley-CG
Sowah-SG
Wallace-SG
Wilson*
Woods*
Atwell*
Sharp*
Bibby*
Kunek*
Maley*
Puoch*
Horvat*
Blicavs*
Bourne-PF
Garbin-PF
Scherf-C
Current NCAA or youth n.t player, someone would really have to shine at 18-22y.o to break in.

some great names there - makes you realize how well the Team came together to wind the world champs in Sth America all those years ago.
Basketball world is a smaller place now - can't be good / world beaters and slip under the radar

Not a great decision.

When you have the cattle you do not have to really coach, just direct.

Spends majority of her time in the USA and relies on others to cover her role.

Look for someone closer to home.
