Some pretty shocking and horrific comments made by Scott Roth regarding abuse from online in the first few minutes of his post game presser this evening. Strongly recommended everyone has a look

Some people are just disgusting, chase them down and let the law punish them. That bozo that won the election leads the way in abuse that seems to make it normal all over the world. Old bloke like me doesn't understand where respect and decency has gone.

Most of the abuse will come from SE Asia and eastern europe, so makes it hard to prosecute.
They tend to be 10+ leg multi's

Yeah we have seen what's happened in the US, best thing anyone can do is stay off social media that’s run by a degenerate to feed other degenerates.

Half the shit is probably rogue states trolling for shits and giggles anyway.

Righttt Ket...…Because social media only become full of degenerates the last few years!!!

Athletes who struggle with the dark side of social media (i agree the comments are horrible) need to STOP going on social media.

The problem here is these comments are going past just the athletes and to the families. That is plain wrong and disgusting

Imagine selling your soul to the world of gambling which the NBL did, accepting money from gambling companies then whingeing and complaining when you cop the negative consequences of this industry.

You reap what you sow.

Which sports don't take money from gambling companies, players, families or any body should not be abused, threatened by small minded bigots.

Jacket, no one should be expected to put up with that level of abuse regardless of sponsorship. What do you want players partners to do when they find out Sportsbet sponsors the NBL? And Dunkman I agree with you entirely

The gambling world is a cesspool and the nbl chose to jump in it because of GREED.

Well the NBL have been challenged to do something, let's see what. Can we dream of the, being the first major sports league to cut ties with sports gambling? It's wrong though that innocent family members of players are the ones copping the consequences of the NBL gambling partnership

Even if ties were to be cut from the gambling industry overseas books would still offer NBL offs regardless.

Very true PW, pretty much impossible to stop betting on the NBL being available. JJs have said their working with the BA Integrity unit to find a solution to this problem

PW, don't the sports books need permission from the governing body of the sport to offer odds?

I know deals are struck between NRL/AFL and sportsbet etc

Reply #953412 | Report this post

Yes correct, in Australia, where the governing body has a revenue stream for their odds being offered.

Overseas bookmakers on the other hand, no.

The cesspool is certainly not limited to the community of shitty online gamblers, although those types are always quick to make broadcast their own poor judgement in the nastiest of ways.
It's not like this problem would be solved even if the NBL cut all ties with all gambling companies. Yes it would help, but this is a global issue not an NBL issue.

Same happens nearly every game in NBL1, direct messages to club and on social platforms is disgusting, and you need staff to be very aware during each game, screen shotting the posts for records and referral to integrity unit and then deleting from platforms. Tiring and horrible work for what are often volunteers.

I wonder in the future if gambling advertising revenue will be viewed in the same light as the cigarette advertising from the past.
But just like smoking, gambling is always going to be there, whether blatantly displayed or legislated against.
It really comes down to absolute morons that gets a thrill from absolute disgusting behaviour and comments. It's always been there as well, but in this social media age it's easier to make those comments without really facing repercussions. Sure, professional athletes are public figures and if they don't perform there can be negative feedback about a subpar performance. But to make comments about family and wishing harm is totally unacceptable. And where does it mainly come from? A society that thinks it can say whatever it wants, imo a lot is copied by kids from either parents or the latest trends on social media. This new move by the government to try and regulate social media for under 16s may help, but it's like trying to stop underage drinking and smoking, it'll still happen especially if parents don't enforce it. But it's like trying to push toothpaste back in the tube, impossible. Social media at the start was so innovative at the start, but has turned into a monster.
Banning gambling revenue isn't really going to solve the problem, unfortunately banning oxygen thieves that make comments is next to impossible.

Cigarette smokers have dropped dramatically over the last 30 years, gambling has taken off. Australia per capita is the highest gambling country in the world by quite a large margin. I understand people that want a small punt, flutter now and then but Australia it's a disease to many. When it goes against you and you lose what you think is a sure thing, over and over there stupidity takes them to slag people off and social media makes it easy as there basically no comeback.

The ironic thing is that Roth is clapping back at his own fans. Tassie fans are known to be passionate, but that goes both ways. Last year he loved it when he was being successful, and now that the JJs are struggling, those passionate fans are equally as passionate, but now in the negative. The abuse being received is unacceptable, and needs to be addressed - absolutely. But Roth hyped up the mob, and now the mob is turning on him and he doesn't like it. Notice how he waited for a win to say something? He's a very calculated guy when it comes to what he says and when in the public light.

You will find that the amount wagered on the NBL is exponentially greater with international bookies than it is here in Oz.

The types of comments made to family members sound very much more like gamblers who have lost money than fans who are upset they're not winning. Let's not pretend this is about hyping up the mob.

Go on NBL's YouTube channel, via VPN, during a live game and observe the chat box.

These are the overseas gamblers who are abusing players and coaches.

I wonder in the future if gambling advertising revenue will be viewed in the same light as the cigarette advertising from the past.

It will, and similarly from a medical standpoint as well, because individuals with dopamine deficiencies are the ones who are most at risk and being preyed on since casual punters don't sustain the industry.

Although the dynamic at play is an interesting one because the federal government would have to intervene as the states/territories collect turnover tax from bookmakers/lottery/casino operators and funnily enough are 'addicted' to the revenue.

The various taxes levied by the states really are the worst kind - transfer duty, payroll tax, turnover tax. Bloodsucking cretins.
