Why Rocco is being held back

This lame puff piece was published today on Brisbane Times.

No genuine responses given by the Bullets, but thought the article might be of interest for a quick 1-2 minute read.

--

Teenage basketball sensation Rocco Zikarsky might have seen more of the bench than the court but he is being forced to earn his place among the elite, according to three-time NBL champion Mitch Norton.

Across the Brisbane Bullets' opening six games this season, the 18-year-old NBA prospect has averaged just under 11 minutes per outing, including only seven in Saturday’s loss to the JackJumpers.

Zikarsky has already made his Australia debut, but his limited action in the Bullets’ lacklustre season has confused many fans, given the X-factor he brings as one of the competition’s tallest players, at 220 centimetres.

However, Norton pointed to the form of fellow centre Tyrell Harrison as the main reason for Zikarsky’s lack of game time.
Harrison has averaged 12.7 points and 8.8 rebounds this season, and if his younger teammate were to earn minutes, he would need to take them from Harrison through performance, not potential.

Speaking to this masthead from Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Primary School as part of the Blitz school program, Boomers veteran Norton said Zikarsky was "obviously super-talented".

“But we also have Tyrell, who I believe is one of the best centres in the NBL,” he said.

“It is tough for Roc to find minutes, but he’s doing a great job at training and winning at training, and that’s only going to translate to the games. We all know what he’s capable of, and he does as well, so it will only be a matter of time before it clicks.

“[The NBA] is a big carrot dangling in front of his face, but he is process-driven, which is something we really like about him.
“His number-one goal is to win here with the Bullets before moving on. He needs to be at his best to go on to better things.”

Zikarsky’s chances of being picked up in the 2025 NBA Draft could fade the longer he stays on the sidelines. In the 2024-25 campaign, he averaged 4.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 0.5 assists per game.

However, his Bullets teammate, American guard Casey Prather, suggested patience would pay dividends for the rising star.

Prather said it was easy to forget, given all the hype, that Zikarsky was only at the start of his career.

“There’s no ceiling, the only thing is going to be him and how hard he can take it on, and how patient he is,” he said.

“Things don’t always go your way, but as long as you put in the hard work, eventually things pay off.

“He knows he has a long career ahead. NBA teams are salivating over him right now.”

The Bullets will travel to Cairns to take on the Taipans on November 2.

With Naar in the side Rocco should get more time, Naar is an elite passer. Hopefully Scheuler is good enough to make use of this.

Rocco barely gets passed the ball in the keyway and spends too much time setting screens up around the 3 point line. Harrison really hasnt been much better. Just leave Rocco in the low block, they have to guard him or it is a lob dunk or OR put back dunk.

Coach seems clueless about getting him involved in any offence. I will be surprised if there isnt a new coach by December. If the ownership, who ever they are, actually want the team to improve, get a new import, new experienced coach and start Rocco. Next time actually get a coach who has had a succesful HEAD coaching record. Brisbane Water Pistols.

If ownership are wanting the team to improve they would keep playing Harrison over Rocco. I thought it was a good article using two experienced guys like Norton and Prather to explain that a very young player needs to keep working and working to get to the standard where he earns more minutes.

I do agree they need to make import changes. Remarkable how long this club has gone on thinking they can pay peanuts and get stars.

My grievance is that Schueller was hired on the basis of his work with junior national teams and development of young talent.

Rocco seems to have gone backwards in Brisbane. Once touted as a top ten lottery pick, he has tumbled down draft boards and I think he'll be lucky to go anywhere in the second round at the current rate.

I thought they were on the right track decreasing Baynes and Sobeys roles on the team, and thought they'd swap those salaries with at least a decent local and imports. But they've just gone cheap. Schueller is trying to do his best grouchy Vickerman impersonation but is it a case of not getting players or him being stubborn and not adapting.
Rocco isn't going to be a 30 minute player at this stage. He had a couple of games last year giving big bursts of the bench but was spent after them. Hoped he could play more minutes, maybe not as frenetic, but more consistent. Is really looking more like Sotto than Wemby. Just confusing what's going on unless there's problems behind the scenes that isn't public. But definitely hasn't done his draft prospects any favours.

In lieu of being able to propose any reason why pwrhaps Rocco made fun of Schueller's man boobs?

Perhaps Schueller was sick of Rocco calling him 'Shorty'

The guy is 18, he's got time to develop. Anyone expecting big things from him this season, like Damon Lowery, is just showing a lack of understanding.

Are they developing him correctly though, yes he is young but his core strength doesn't seem to have improved. He has to be able to hold his own around the bucket but to easily moved, reach does not do it on its own.

The bullets need to realise they're not doing themselves any favours either. They're not going to attract the talented next stars the way they're going and it's a great way to get sixth man levels players for the roster without the pay check. Not to mention the income streams from those making it to the nba.

Franchises like wildcats and breakers have realised that this is a beneficial option

Bullets prob need it more than anyone else

If Rocco develops well then Brisbane will attract more Next Stars.

Takes a fade away from half a metre from the bucket. Played just a few minutes in the first, just not showing anything.

He's just not very good. The sheer volume of social media accounts that gas him up for doing nothing is hilarious

LOL, you and your crazy conspiracy theories.

No, the obvious reality is that he is actually already awesome and so they're a much better team with him on the floor but they are intentionally choosing to sit him and be worse because of reasons.

He could be good though, he's got to get core strength and just doesn’t seem to be happening.

These things don't happen overnight. He's a skinny kid trying to develop his body, and it will take some time before he can match the men he's playing against.

Soon after Zikarsky signed with the Bullets they played a pre-season game against a touring college team and he dominated, as a just turned 17 yo playing against guys in their late teens/early 20's.

I think a lot of people tend to make excuses for his lack of development over these past 1.5 seasons but he seems to have gone backwards. Could be the Bullets, could be poor work ethic I don't know.

You just used an example of him dominating against a young team. Yep, if the NBL was full of 18-22 year-olds he'd be going very well. It's not, it's far more physically demanding and it will take him time.
