Tatum penalty

Smashed with a feather. Apology and $3000 fine. Referees have every right to be pissed off, but then again the NBL has never cared about role models in our sport. Coaches and players have been able to non stop abuse refs for far too long. No other sport would stand for this.

Certainly got his money's worth. Now every coach knows they can go on a big rant about the refs with only a small fine and no suspension forthcoming. Perhaps even boot a hole in the electronic signage too. Brilliant.

And I don't think people understand what was captured on the referee mics before Tatum copped a very deserved technical.

But Tatum is the victim here, and you can't say otherwise when he's claiming racism and whatnot.

Agree with both above, nbl should come out and say it won't be tolerated anymore, when happens again, 50k.

All 3 refs could sue for defamation as basically he called all of them racist

Dunkman, they should have introduced a zero tolerance approach years ago. There has been much worse than this on repeated occasions by particular coaches over the years. Yes, some have been repeatedly ejected and fined but that has not served as a deterrent. I don't understand why the players and coaches are allowed to touch umpires, criticise umpires and scream profanities directed at the umpires in our sport. There are nearly always small children at games that hear and see these things. It is just terrible. The umpires should be held accountable but there should be a process behind closed doors where clubs can air their grievances. Sebastian, I don’t think Tatum went that far. He did not say that definitely happened. He chose his words carefully and said something like maybe it had something to do with skin colour. He left it as an open question without asserting an answer.

It's an emotional game, sometimes a little bit of tolerance should be excepted but boundaries should certainly be framed of what is allowed and not.

When I first heard the statement about the colour of his skin I thought he was directly implying discrimination. But watching it a few times he was seemed to explain in his view why he was made an example of for the tech, that he was taller, deeper voice and different skin colour than other coaches. So while their was an inference, I don't think he was necessarily saying there was racism, just that he stands out from all the other coaches currently. And it is a degree of human nature to be more intimidated by Tatum than an overweight middle age man who wouldn't be out of place at a dungeons and dragons convention.
Ultimately it has highlighted the bad behaviour of coaches and how certain ones get away with more than others. Coaches should be able to question calls, but there has to be a level of conduct. Any swearing should be automatic tech, and if warned about carrying on then follow up on it. Can't really remember too many ejections lately despite the behaviour being the worst it's ever been.
And rewatching again, it hilarious to watch Hickey suppressing laughing when incompetent referees is brought up, never seen a hand move over someone's face and mouth like it did. Can just imagine what he was thinking.

Unbelievably soft penalty. The guy called a ref incompetent and then implied racism. He should have been whacked hard with, at the very least, a huge fine that is partly suspended for two years.

Weak penalty by the NBL.

Arguing racism yet he got a smaller fine than past offenders like Buford and Forde.

Just wondering why BA looked into the NBL issue.

Does the NBL have an integrity unit?

IMO with what Buford & others have been allowed to get away with handing down a very harsh penalty would've made them look even more ridiculous.

I believe a line in the sand is needed now with an official notice going out to all clubs & moving forward larger fines & suspensions will be enforced.

All this could have been avoided had BA cracked down on CGs kick outs and flops. I mean that one from last week wow...how that wasn't called flopping is beyond me and still nothing has been said by BA or the NBL on it, apart from Larry coming out and saying "Lets stay classy" whatever the hell that means.

For those that missed it here it is:

Firstly - watch the vision. The one against the Hawks was not a flop. Between his ankle and his knee, the action he took was to protect his body. Anyone thinking differently is simply incorrect.

Secondly - had the play have counted (if the clock was actually running) the NBL have already stated it would have been a foul on Hickey. Potentially even upgraded for not making a proper play at the ball.

Thirdly - Upon the play re-starting, United turned the ball over resulting in a Hawks 3, so the outcome went against MU anyway.

Yes, CG accentuates contact. But so do many players in basketball. If the refs don't see a problem with it, it is considered within the rules of the game.

Bullshit

He threw his head back which made him go off balance which led him to land awkwardly which led him to roll around on the ground. Miraculously he bounced back up , yet again, and kept playing without issue.

CG does accentuate contact but he cops closer attention than anyone else in the league except Cotton.

It's easy to stamp out the more egregious examples of flopping. For whatever reason the NBL doesn't want to.

One way of looking at this, is as follows

If defenders push the boundaries and try to get away with fouls without the ref seeing,

Then....

Why shouldn't he try to draw refs attention and sometimes get fouls called that aren't entirely there?

Is one that different to the other?

How about blaming the league- who could stop the egregious flopping - rather than the player who's getting any advantage he can, just like those defending him are doing?

Maybe go back to the same game and have a look at Harvey doing his best superman impersonation after a shot trying to milk a foul. That is just as big a flop. 3rd quarter 6:17

i mentioned in another game thread how a lot of physical play wasn't called by the refs. this pretty much causes flopping, as you need to accentuate it to get the call.

I concur with that comment. Ref was heard with Harell saying something to the effective of "you are a big boy , you should be able to handle it" when questioning why a foul wasn't called.
