NBA player cuts before the season an opportunity for the NBL

Some solid players are currently without a team, and with the NBL's success in getting players back into the big show, should we see clubs like Brisbane, SEM, and even Perth (if Cotton is out for a while) bring in a star import to turn things around?

Brisbane through some cash trying to get Creek to sign with them so clearly money isn't an issue.

The best available free agents entering the 2024-25 NBA season:

Lonnie Walker
Markelle Fultz
Dennis Smith Jr.
Nassir Little
Jae Crowder
Robert Covington
Oshae Brissett
Justin Holiday
Danuel House
Bismack Biyombo

I think it will certainly get to the point where these types of players are gettable. Getting Harrell at age 30 has set the bar a bit higher.

In saying that though, many of these names are NBA veterans who might be satisified with their career/earnings, so a stint in the NBL where the money is peanuts would likely have to be more circumstantial.

Unless million dollar contracts become more common in the NBL, then guys like Fultz would be more likely to pursue Europe if looking to play outside the NBL.

I still think we exaggerate how good or important the league is a little bit...

We do, well the commentators do because they're paid to do it. Anything that knows the score knows we're not even close to the #2 league in the world, Top 10-12 yes.

However EuroLeague is a lot tougher than NBL and NBA vets generally don't want to get exposed credit to Kemba Walker having the balls to try it last season. Big money in China/Japan but sub-NBL standard leagues that NBA scouts don't take that seriously.

Which with the Next Stars program and all the NBA scouts regularly here to scout those prospects it brings the NBL right back into the picture despite not being able to compete financially. Hence, Montrezl Harrell.

Brisbane trying to sign a peanut like Creek is about as Brisbane as you can get.

What clearly works in the NBL's favour is the timing of the league. You can sign a full season here and be done by the time NBA teams are looking to fill gaps after the trade deadline etc. It is somewhere between G League (most likely for call ups) and Euro leagues (great money, but more restrictive contracts) and there'll likely always be some players who like that niche.
