Boomers thoughts - Milton Doyle - Kyrie Irving - Coaching
So two interesting names popped up in Boomers discussion today - Kyrie Irving and Milton Doyle. Kyrie indicated that he'd 'entertain' the idea of playing for the Boomers presumably if he is overlooked by Team USA, and Milton Doyle said he wants to get citizenship and play for the team. How do people feel about that?
For me, Irving probably wouldn't actually follow through but if he did, even at 36 come the next Olympics, he'd be a near lock. As for Doyle, there's a logjam at the positon with Giddey, Exum, Daniels, Green, Furphy, Proctor all near locks for the guard spots, and Henshal and other guards coming up behind them.
Also Gazey was talking about the Boomers coaching spot and mentioned he'd like to see Andrej Lemanis in the role again. I've defended Lemanis consistently for about 10 years and I've always thought he's the best coach the team has had. Before pandering to Ben Simmons or anyone else we need to look at who built the culture to be what it was when we were consistently our most successful, and Lemanis had the Boomers humming with a consistently play style across all levels from qualifiers, to the big games and beyond and if not for a few pretty minor hiccups would have 2 medals around his neck.
Other names mentioned were the obvious ones, Trevor Gleeson, Dean Vickerman, Adam Caporn, Matt Neilsen. Meh... I'd pick Gleeson over the rest of them but I am not enamoured with anyone who presided over the last world cup and Olympics. Scott Roth should definitely be considered for either head or assistant coach.
In other thoughts we're seeing an emergence of a few players who look set to fall in the 27/28 frame - Alex Toohey, Luke Travers, Jack McVeigh, Rocco Zikarsky, Ben Henshal, Taran Armstrong, Lachlan Olbright as obvious bolters, and Toohey, Zikarsky and Henshal firming up their draft prospects at the same time.
Will be an interesting couple of years but already some things to look at as we head towards LA.
