Changes to VJBL

Hi All,

Just a query that has come out of a rep tryout that my friends son went to. There was a mention to the parents that there may be an alternative competition that was going to be setup as team numbers are now being restricted by VJBL.
Has anyone heard anything about this?

I doubt it.

Probably just that association running something for the kids that didnt make it.

I think some associations want to keep players involved and training with them if they aren't at the standard at the moment to make a VJBL team. I haven't heard anything about VJBL restricting entries either.

I've been led to believe there has been emails sent to some clubs relating to the number of teams they can enter in the VJBL. Something about depending upon the size of the association and their structures for the domestic competitions supporting the quality of the teams etc

VJBL is supposed to be at a higher level than the domestic competitions

Try out numbers are really big. tough for Associations to accomodate - tough job making selections

There are probably some associations that have greater numbers in their rep programmes than they do in their domestic programmes. Maybe these is where the emails have been directed.

I'd say that generally you want more kids playing more levels of basketball, but the lower grades of VJBL must be a nightmare to grade, resulting in lopsided games that might actually do more harm than good in a kids long term interest in the game

I'd 100% support reforming the vjbl to reduce the number of teams and make it a proper representative competition.

Rather than giving more kids the opportunity to play basketball, I think the travel and overall commitment puts a lot off from getting involved. If there was an intermediate step which was regional and had a shorter season, more kids might give it a go and work out whether they want to pursue a higher level of basketball.

@CC81 Im not sure it will ever change now. Way to much money involved, especially for the clubs using VJBL to bankroll their senior/NBL1 comps.

the lower levels of VJBL are essentially regional comps anyway. That's why they have the P1 and P2 set up. So a team from one side of the peninsula playing VJBL 6-10 isn't getting grouped with a team from Geelong/SurfCoast region, or even against anything on the western side of the CBD.

I think maybe a rebrand of those lower level VJBL grades might help, but really i think it's the parents neeed to understand your kid carving up and winning a medal in VJBL9 doesn't mean he's going to bankroll your retirment with an NBA deal

@Hedge,

BV is significantly changing the VJBL U20 competition for this coming season.

Listen to the latest BV Podcast for more detailed information. Next seasons U20 competition could be an indicator of what might happen to lower VJBL levels in future years.
