What's happening to the 3 second rule?

I started noticing it in the Olympics warm ups, but it has extended throughout pre season and now into the nbl. Bigs especially are camping in the key.

Has Fiba scrapped the 3 second rule? Or do ref's just no longer care.

And it changes the game, and not for the better.

It hasn't been enforced in years, it’s annoying at times but refs probably got enough to worry about.

It's only fair that bigs can get some sort of advantage. Cotton and all his little guard mates have reinvented the carry and travel rules for ever.

The carry rule practically never gets called anymore. Some of the change of directions that players get away with are ridiculous.

Another one you will see almost every game;

Import guard takes 1, sometimes 2 steps before letting go of the ball to start dribbling after an inbound pass - no problem. Jesse Wagstaff gets called for a travel for bouncing the ball at exactly the same time as his first step. Would love someone to do a montage of this like they have done for Lebron and others in the NBA.

You beat me to it, Drexler.

I see it at all levels these days, as well as the jump and step before even looking to release the ball. I've given up trying to draw the refs attention to it - they just don’t see it, or they don’t give it much importance.

The rule has always been there, but don't forget that most umpires can’t count to three. So travel and 3 seconds rarely get called!

I think its because the benefit of standing in the key for longer than 3 seconds is not as benefitial as it once was.

The 5 - out revolution and the uptick in teams wanting to shoot 3s rather than post up 2s has almost made the 3 in the key rule not worth the work.
