NBL Round 1 - 5 games 19/9 - 22/9

The NBL season tips off on Thursday night with a Grand Final rematch between the JJ's and United

Might as well have 1 thread for each round this season? Half the games get no discussion, or minimal posts and it clogs up the main board

JJ's might be tired after 5 games in quick succession including Fri/Sat/Sun in Singapore. United will be hoping JJ's come out lacklustre, as they did in GF game 1 after 2 recent trips to Perth.

Illawarra should defeat Cairns sans Armstrong, Makoi and Adnam.

Bullets - will they have Bannan and McDaniel? Regardless I'd be tipping them over Gillespie-free Breakers

Perth in Perth is a great challenge for SEM who finished the Blitz with 2 strong wins. I'll tip Perth, but let's hope it's a classic like Perth's opener against the JJ's last year was. Can Windler follow Usher with 35 on debut?

Adelaide with the Kings first up, with Harrell aallegedly in uniform. Will Jaylen Adams be suiting up?

Adult tix were ~$35 inc fees (seated anywhere except courtside/box seats) which includes the womens game beforehand if applicable. Kids tix from ~$10, families around ~$60.

Thursday, Friday, Sunday games are at RAC Arena. For the Saturday double header at HBF Stadium (much smaller) $35 gets you into both games!

They have done a solid keeping prices low so if it isnt well attended they didn't advertise enough. I've spoken to quite a few people I know in the last couple weeks who follow the NBL to varying degrees who had no idea it was even on. I hope its a big success.

Cairns I only saw grabs here and there. But Makoi's numbers were terrible. Shot 3 from 20 and almost as many turnovers as assists.

Adnam looks past it, Edwards needs to be the scorer, Bradshaw isn't really a PG. So it's Armstrong or bust. If he has a break out year they should be competitive. If he gets injured again, or struggles to take a step forward, it might be an ugly year for them unfortunately

Hoopfest Coverage:

I live in Perth and I generally keep an eye on all forms of media. There's been virtually nothing said about Hoopfest apart from when it got announced months ago. The government and various Perth event social pages have promoted it without going into much detail but the response from the public appears to be quite lukewarm as an observation.

Really not sure how full or empty RAC arena will be but would not be surprised if it's sparse.

I'm expecting RAC arena to have the top bowl curtained off, like they did for the NBL1 West Grandfinal. It makes 6-8k people make it seem "full".

I think a bigger deal should be made about how cheap the games are.

Only $40ish for an NBL game in Perth is very good value. Considering the average price of Wildcats tickets are closer to $80 these days.

A JJs injury crisis being reported on the NBL app with potential roster concerns stretching out for 6 to 8 weeks. Just speculating on my part that would be the timeframe for Macdonald's injury. Also possibly Sword who did not play in game 3 after going off in game 2 following a heavy head impact with the playing Court. So, potentially 2 guards down for Thursday. All the other key players including their superstars were on Court during the dying minutes of game 3 so presumably they are all going ok. Drmic did look completely spent after knocking down the winning 3. Hopefully nothing more there. I get the feeling from what Roth is reported to have said that maybe there is a 3rd key injury but no idea who that might be. Obviously rotations are significantly impacted if Sword and MacDonald are out for Thursday nights game. Maybe the JJs bring back Lachie Barker as an injury replacement player. At least he would be up to speed with all of their schemes and systems. Roth not very happy at all from the sounds of things and understandably so.

The wins over Illawarra and Cairns (with Armstrong) were strong, the Illawarra game especially was at a fairly high level and they came out on top

I've been a Tigers/United fan since the 90's, and I was at game 5 and I barely felt disappointed. Was happy for Roth, the JJ's and Tasmania.

I think the fatigue and general soreness will likely count against the JJs in this one like LV says but now Roth has everyone thinking they are underdogs which is exactly what he wants. Apart for Sword, this is basically the same team that almost/should have got it done against that G league United team who were basically 2 way or exhibit 10 calibre players and tough opposition. They had the JJs on toast in the first half and the JJs were trying big time. Apparently the game is a sellout and a lot of travelling JJs fans and expats over there so you just never know especially if they get back close enough late.

That was a significant spray- 10 times the Spray McCarron gave them last year which people were talking about at the time

It's the kind of spray you'd hear in 1980's footy.

In this day and age players expect a different approach. Not sure Wells will connect with his team and get buy-in with that kind of temper tantrum.

I can't imagine Roth or Vickerman losing control of their emotions like that. Strong feedback, a couple of F bombs here and there, sure, but not a full-on toddler style temper tanty from Roth or Vickerman. I just can't imagine it. Maybe it has happened behind closed doors but it's hard to envisage.

Could be wrong but my gut feeling, based purely on that and their 52 point loss at the Blitz, this guy won't be a successful coach

Reply #949961 | Report this post

LV
Earlier this year

Having said that, I could imagine Gleeson having a tanty like that in years gone by. He had an angry streak for sure.

I just think, the last 5 or 10 years, the dial has shifted and players expect a different style of relating to their coach. That old school authoritarian, yell and get angry, throw my clipboard on the ground, that old style just won't connect with players in the 2020's.

Reply #949962 | Report this post

Anonymightymouse

The first one, in isolation, no problem with that, although not smart to be delivering it during an open training session and then yelling to turn the f*cking cameras off. That tells your players you aren't under control.

The second one shortly after, with a full-blown dummy spit with a clipboard dump and papers going everywhere, is the sort of childish act that starts to diminish credibility with the playing group.

If the group is winning regularly it will be ok, but this sort of coaching wears thin real quick if the team isn't being successful. Interesting to see where this goes and whether he can actually build a connection with the group.

Anonymightymouse, I actually agree with you along the lines of this kind of thing being the last thing Adelaide needed when stability was starting to creep back in, and fans were starting to forget about the Ninnis situation. Even though I do not think anything of it beyond a coach firing up (It must happen eveyrywhere all the time in Pro sports), it just puts more focus on the coaching situation and givs disgruntled fans further fuel to question where the club is at. Really bad timing basically with the cameras on.

I do not have an issue with anything that happened, but it might also just be the reality right now that Adelaide really can't afford any excuses to be potrayed negatively.

" Currently, the NBL does not have a fixed period for which concussed players stand down.

Ugly gane but good for United to get a win first up. Interesting that Loe appears to be starter and closer over Lee. Goulding clearly not 100% and despite the sloppy play and numerous turnovers Vickerman would be pleased. White some clutch play down the stretch but he had some real brain fades with ball in hand tonight. It felt like the JJ's apart from Magnat and McVeigh and a Doyle cameo were going through the motions somewhat.

AFL protocol is 12 days with 11 steps. Will be 9 days next game for JJs. Expect they would be super cautious with all their player especially Magnay. Sword will have been 13 days so should probably be back. Likely Krislovic revives 2022 and plays as an undersized 5 rotating with Deng.

Was at the Melbourne United vs Tasmania JackJumpers game tonight.

Tickets were cheap. $39 for row C.

Attendance listed on the box score was 4622, which seems about right.

Drmic and Crawford had it going early, but both faded out. Magnay was given absolutely no respect when catching the ball on the perimeter. JJ's will need to work out better ways to use him than having him as a pressure-release valve above the free throw line on the perimeter. Felt like every time he got the ball it let Melbourne reset their defense.

Both teams still looked a bit rough/rusty, as you might expect for a season opener I guess.

Magnay was definitely concussed. Took quite a while for anyone to notice, but he was staggered and staggering for quite a while. Looked ill on the sidelines until the end of the game and wandered off to the changerooms, skipping the handshake line after the buzzer.

Goulding didn't do much other than stirring the JJ's after he tweaked his ankle.

Delly was pretty easily best on court for mine.

Random comments on last night

- Enjoyed the big man battles. Magnay is a world-class rim protector but Loe and Lee competed well. Loe's defense and physicality has improved as his career’s gone on. One of the better back-up 5’s in the NBL. Downgrade on Hukporti yes, but still a strong back-up for Lee (who I assume will be starter eventually). Losing Lee is a downgrade for JJ’s, and Magnay getting in foul trouble and getting banged up is a preview of something that might give Roth headaches all year.

- 4,600 is about the crowd you might expect in Perth for non-Perth teams. Hoopsfest is a trade-off- you create buzz and hype and get big names involved. You also get neutral games with lower crowds and crowd involvement. I’ll sit on the fence for now.

- Delly and Ili were too good and were ultimately the difference. Delly was scoring at will. With Sword or Macdonald providing a better foil, this is probably a 50/50 game instead of a 9-point United win.

- The entire game felt like another Grand Final game. Same narrative. United ahead, JJ’s never going away and then closing in the clutch. Difference is JJ’s couldn’t get closer than 6.

- End of first quarter was classic JJ’s- down 7, but with hustle and effort, capitalise on opposition errors causing 2 straight TO’s and back in the game.

- The NBL is over-refereed compared to other basketball, which Gaze mentioned without using those words. This has been clear in Blitz and last night. In the Blitz United were getting smashed with foul calls but last night it was JJ’s - a disadvantage coming off 3 straight FIBA games. A challenge for JJs and United- physical teams who push the boundaries.

MaxM - I'm assuming it will be same as last night seems like a lot of hoopsfest equipment to dismantle. Globetrotters and their mc hyping the crowd, dj in the big boom box, weird scoreboard that shows incorrect point and foul count for each player! (same as the non-operational game clock on Kayo/Youtube for every preseason game). It was ok last night entertainment wise but the regular no fluff wildcats game night entertainment is far superior imo. Lets hope Mark Arena doesn't plan on turning it into an EDM festival on the regular

Was interesting in the ESPN season preview the rumour that Baller mentioned a week or so ago was also reported. Maybe that has now even more gravity as it would be a travesty for this season to just meander along and be one of lost opportunity (with the roster fundamentals of the JJs otherwise so good) merely because of a mix of injury misfortune and roster imbalance in terms of the lack of a gun import in the front court to go with Deng and Magnay. That roster imbalance could have been papered over with a fit MacDonald and Magnay and then maybe the return of McVeigh later in the season. But all of that is now looking increasingly unlikely or compromised. A real conundrum for Roth and the JJs brains trust. I have probably been the biggest advocate of what Sword can bring but can the JJs now afford that luxury and Lachie Barker did look serviceable last night. It doesn't ring true to me that the JJs would cut Sword but what he can bring in the next few games is going to be super important if there is any truth to that rumour.

This game showcased the best and worst of SEM. They have weapons and can score in multiple ways. They'll be hard to put away cos they're always a threat to score quickly.

Obviously we live in a footy-centric environment but I feel hoopsfest has missed a sitter pumping dosh into djs and the boombox. I am enjoying the spectacle for the most part but last night there must have been 20-30 ppl max on top of the boombox in the spectators area, a good portion of them media, former players, NBL 'scenesters' who are definitely not paying to be there.

EDM duo Slumberjack performed before the Cats game and apart from small pockets of suagr-hyped kids doing star jumps in the crowd there was little response for the most part. It was far too loud and distracting, so much $$$ that could have gone into plastering ads around to get the footy crowd and others who are on the fence about bball to buy some cheap tix and attend.

Sundays final game between 36ers/Sydney shows the same seating greyed out/curtained off as the Tas/Melb game on Thurs night, lots of available seats still available too. I know that by curtaining areas at RAC you don't have to open the bars, food outlets on the upper levels, clean toilets etc so its less staff costs which obviously plays into it.

I thought the Tas v Melb game came across really well on TV. Looked reasonably full and the atmosphere came through well. Surprised to see less than 5000.

I think the main trick the NBL missed with Hoopfest is having a double-header on Sunday with Sydney v Adelaide followed by Perth v Melbourne, would have been another full house and a great game too.

Yes that double header would have been chockers for sure

They probably thought having two Perth games would significantly reduce crowds for the remaining games. Which is probably true.

Maybe, but having four games at Perth Arena on Thurs/Fri/Sun with decent/big crowds and two at Challenge on Saturday with small crowds is a good result, and would have ensured a better look for the CH10 games on Sunday.

Just read on NBL web re success of the hoops-fest and that it was to be repeated etc etc.

We are seeing a very full and hectic intro to our reg NBL season with Blitz, some teams opting for OS tours. Then comes Hoopfest, start reg season) with most teams still working things out and rarely at full and healthy strength.

How moving Hoopfest to the last round of reg season. Thinking of last couple of seasons, all those games to determine who would advance. There would be some cracking games as teams knew exactly what they had to do to go further. Might even eliminate the need for play-in round to determine 5th and 6th.

Any thoughts (other than my sanity)?

Maybe actually utilise the public holiday (today is King's Birthday here).

The last round is a good idea if most teams are vying for finals, if it's a done deal before last round it’s not going to work.

I'll be devil's advocate here, if I am vying for finals I do not want a "home" game played at a neutral venue.

Not a fan of that idea. Thats when fans are most passionate and results matter the most.

If you're going to do it, make it early in the season.

7 TV news just reported both Magnay and Sword fit to play Saturday night against United for JJs. Should probably give them the edge given United has to back up from the SEM game Thursday. Crowd should also be even more off the planet than usual with the unfurling of the championship banner and AFL grand final festivities same day.

A round of basketball has been completed and just 109 posts for it, this 1 thread per round is messy. Can we go back to individual ones?
