JJs vs Quimsa: 13/9/24

Jackjumpers kick off their Intercontinental Cup campaign tonight at 7pm aest vs Argentinian side Quimsa. Quimsa are coming off a 13 point defeat to the G-League United team last night, where they shot just 36% from the field, only putting up 65 points. The game will be shown on Kayo, ESPN and the FIBA YouTube channel, so everyone should have a way to watch it.

Ex the FIBA preview:

" For the first time ever, we will see an Australian team at the FIBA Intercontinental Cup, with the Tasmania JackJumpers looking like they could go all the way. Quimsa and Unicaja are back in action 24 hours after their first games in Singapore."

“ The FIBA Intercontinental Cup has been around since 1965, but even with all the format changes and most of the continents represented, this is the first time ever that a team from Australia has made the event.

As the reigning champions of the NBL, the JackJumpers surely believe they have what it takes to claim the key matchup and become the first team from Down Under to collect an Intercontinental win.

X factors: In a quick fire tournament such as this, it's always crucial to have fresh legs. Quimsa had an exhausting game against the NBA G League United on Day 1, battling to the finish line to reduce the deficit and stay alive in the hunt for the Final.

Meanwhile, the JackJumpers rested on Thursday and will come rested to this encounter. Keep that in mind in case the game goes down to the wire and Quimsa start running out of fuel.”

JJ's have an advantage for Game 1 but a huge disadvantage for Game 2 against G League United- they've got a game tonight, then another tomorrow arvo

If they grab an early lead tonight, I'd be expecting Crawford, Magnay and Doyle to see limited minutes in the 2nd half

And then the final and classification games on Sunday so the JJ's will be playing 3 games in 3 days.

Yes, Unicaja get their pool games finished tonight and are heavily favoured in that one as well. You would think they
would prevail very comfortably over Al Riyadi. The JJs v G League U game on Saturday will probably need the JJs to play their proper rotations for a long way if they are going to prevail. Unicaja will then have the advantage either way against the JJs or G League U in the Final on Sunday which is at 9pm AEST. That will be the final unless the JJs or Unicaja lose in a boilover tonight.

JJ's should win this comp. easily seeing the NBL is the second best league in the world behind the NBA.

4 things out of that. JJs look potentially a defensive nightmare, Terangi not McVeigh but did offer something, offence still rusty and needs work but Sword if he figures out the Jackie way he could be devastating both ways.

All well said KL, my other note was how good a fully healthy Magnay will be for them

Ewww, these terms are so random - this is a poor man's Club World Cup.

Never forget that the Wildcats beat Real Madrid for a bronze medal, the only international honour for an NBL club.

Yes it's a nothing tournament, worst thing is most teams can be so different from previous seasons as changes in the off season are numerous for most teams.

Yes, the NBL Champs, the Liga ACB minor premiers and the G league rep team all not much chop. Larry has set the NBL up on a hiding to nothing here. Will be very embarrassing for all if the JJs stumble.

Sorry everyone is so negative about this tournament, still fantastic to see the JJs and the NBL on a global stage. Can't wait to see JJs vs G-League this afternoon with a spot in the final on the line.

I don't know why FIBA is claiming that no Australian teams have ever played at the Intercontinental Cup before. That's not correct.

Malaga plays in Europe's third competition, the BCL. And even the team from Europe's third level competition is wrecking other teams.

If the EuroLeague champions were actually playing, the JJ's would stand no chance.

The Euroleague media (Eurohoops) not trash talking it.

"Tasmania Jackjumpers Rout Quisma"

“A powerful entrance in the 4th quarter was all the Jackjumpers needed to get a comfortable win”

“Tasmania Jackjumpers opened their 2024 FIBA Intercontinental Cup games with an 81 - 59 win over Quimsa. Quite the impressive debut for an Australian team in the history of the tournament.”

In any event, and you do have to put a serious caveat around the quality of the opposition, that was circa 2022 JJs defense on show last night. It was just stifling. 2024 offence was also back along with Roth's proper rotations. So not completely devoid of utility in terms of analysis for NBL 2025. Just remember that whatever cheap derision is thrown at the JJs for participating in this, it was not their idea. They are just doing their best in representing the NBL and Australia. Those comments would also equally apply to your own NBL team were they participating. You are basically denigrating the NBL but I know that is entirely another debate and thread that has been done before.

My issue isn't with the JJs nor the NBL but FIBA.

Facts are evidently too hard for our global governing body.

Saints infamously declined to participate in the NBL playoffs and a chance of three-peating.

I wonder what the go is with Roth hardly playing sword over the blitz and limited minutes again last night I thought he was impressive when on court, I wonder if there are issues or just saving him for season proper

There was some interesting body language between the 2 when Sword came to the bench at one point last night, hopefully there's no serious issues between the 2

It makes you wonder if after seeing how dominant Oliver has been for the kings they now realise they really need a dominant 4 to contend have to watch this space I think. I'm also hearing apparently the rockets have been really impressed with McVeigh during pre season the chances of him getting released during the season and returning to Australia are getting less

It was very chalk and cheese compared to when young Nunn came off for giving up a foul. He stopped, looked Roth in the eye and listened intently. Just think Sword was disappointed in himself and knew he had done the wrong thing. Wasn't long before he was back on again playing well. Roth might also be saving him for today’s game. Andrew Gaze was saying how athletic the GLeague U team is and that the JJs would need to find another gear and get close to their best to win. Sword might be very important if the JJs are going to be super serious about this game. Great to hear McVeigh is impressing. If anyone can succeed against the odds it is him.. Would be very surprised if the JJs cut someone unless there is some serious misdemeanour involved. You could see last year Roth was so frustrated he didn’t have either Kenyon or McDaniel for lock down D roles especially in those games against NZ. I think Roth would rather have the extra D than the scoring punch. That is just his way. Kings may have been a bridge too far even with McVeigh on the roster unless Sword proved to be something special and there are signs he could be that good but the jury is still out on that. He just has to learn to play his role within Roth’s system. I think that is the key thing with him at the moment.

Olgun on his podcast said that apparently Craig Sword came into a pre-season a bit underdone.

Nothing too usual for an import in the off-season but obviously would stick out in the environment of the JJ's where everyone has been playing in the off-season.

I think we'll only really see Sword reach regular 20+mins towards the back of the season. Or maybe not at all if they're rolling.

I agree that the game to use him is against G-League United, Crawford might get exposed defensively.
