Fouls - home v away

Current discussion in AFL relating to home crowd advantage for free kicks made me think that it would be interesting to see which associations consistently pay more fouls in favour of their home teams. The statistics should be available at some level via PlayHq. A quick look at a couple of leagues identified a +3 to 5 average differential across the current season in favour of the home team. Do the referee coaches / BV look at that?

Home team is usually more aggressive whilst away team is usually more passive due to a range of factors.

Anecdotally, at VJBL level have found playing at home is tougher as referees seem to mark the home team harder. But some associations i've visited it seems quite clearly the opposite. Admittedly, low-ish level league like this features lower-level refs, so it's all a bit of a lottery. Consistency the number one bug-bear

Aside from rowdy home crowd support, part of the home bias in foul calls are away teams having to adjust to local styles of referring. I was familiar with Manly girls in years gone by and their referees were (IMO) whistle happy when it came to ANY contact involving the ball handler. So we had zero tolerance on any contact during dribble penetration including situations were well set defenders looking for a charge call. Defenders had to apologize for defending well. So we get teams with more physically robust playing styles - notably Penrith, Bankstown and Comets - visit and - due to high foul counts - have their game styles and player decision making completely up ended. But it goes the other way - when Manly girls headed to Melbourne, where contact intolerance was less present - they found dribble penetrations more hotly contested, more strips etc. It would take a couple of pool games for the girls to adjust.
