I dont think either assistant really has that much actual coaching experience, at least one got a free ride via his dad's previous roles. The player development roles are all about making everyone feel good about themselves.
Daniels was terrible at inbounding the ball in all situations, or maybe he was excellent at inbounding it after 4.5secs but before 5 secs. The baseline plays in particular offered absolutely nothing. There must have been someone better and more decisive at it, and having a quick mover like Daniels available to receive a pass.
Italy got back into the game with physicality and acting. The big italian centre landed two clean shots on Cotton. They should have been reviewed, or the coach should have gone off his chops at the refs about it. Nothing was said.
The subbing rotations in general, and then specifically in that last quarter were mindblowing poor.
The game coaching - Italian time out - for Aust - defensive rules - ok get a stop - they are likely to look for a 3 - if they score - what is going to happen??? what are we going to do, who is going to inbounds. - What happened they scored a 3 and complete chaos. The game was lost in that time out - the 5ft tall Italian coach set up a play for a shooter and then told his guys they needed to be aggressive on defence, get the ball back. The aussies had the wrong team on the floor, the didnt plan or they werent drilled and the coach didnt bail them out with a sub/to.
#7 lost them the game plan and simple, he is a high risk reward guy - block a shot - pass it out of bounds - block a shot - get lost on next defensive possession and give up 2 - but it was the coach who kept putting him back in.
Dash game away a terrible inbound pass to the italians - probably should have got an assist for it.
Even in OT, last minute they just needed a stop, and a guy goes for a gamble to try and steal the ball lead directly to a layup and game over. Not sure the player knew the time and situation and didnt seem like there was any direction to not foul/go for steal.
You don't have to be in regular coaching form to coach out a game like that, you need to have the ability to make the decisions immediately - that might be experience or it might just be natural ability. Standing out on court away from assistants also makes it difficult for the asst to suggest something.
Generally I thought the effort and energy, the body language, the presentation and defence of the team was good. I was thinking this team could make it through to the final.
A few of the players were very soft with the ball, and i partly blame Australian refs for calling the game so differently to FIBA/Euro games.
But in the end it was purely a coaching failure. Clearly he failed in the moment. Probably a great guy and great in his role at home.
You also have to prepare to be tough and only play 9-10 guys or less. Thus far this year I have seen Vic Metro lose games because they were trying to give everyone a run, not hurt anyone's feelings or expectations. The increase from 10 to 12 players on a team is a tough adjustment for some.
