NCAAW Tournament

March Madness is here, huge amount of hype for this one. Aussies in the tournament are led by Georgia Amoore and Jaz Shelley, both expected WNBA draft picks.

Can the best scorer ever in D1 in Caitlin Clark get her Iowa team over the line? They'll have to face LSU in a title rematch before the Final Four to do so. Crazy. Oh yeah and South Carolina are undefeated. Again. Will they be stopped at all this time round? Heaps of good match ups and heaps of guaranteed madness.

List of Aussies (and NZers) in the tournament - I count 28 players, let me know if any are missed.
"^“ means unlikely to play/low minutes/injured, and “*" is for our Kiwi friends.

Albany Regional 1
#3 Oregon State – Kelsey Rees
#6 Nebraska – Jaz Shelley, Jessica Petrie^
#14 Eastern Washington - Breeje Schuler^*

Portland Regional 4
#3 NC State - Lizzy Williamson^
#4 Gonzaga - Eliza Hollingsworth
#5 Utah - Isabel Palmer^
#16 Drexel - Chloe Hodges

Albany Regional 2
#2 UCLA - Izzy Anstey^
#3 LSU - Last-Tear Poa (unsure, was out with concussion)
#4 Kansas State - Rebekah Dallinger^
#5 Colorado - Sara-Rose Smith^, Charlotte Whittaker^*
#13 Portland - Lucy Cochrane, Emme Shearer*, Dyani Ananiev, Florence Dallow^*, Emma Strelein^, Melika Samia^*
#15 Cal Baptist - Emily Sewell

Portland Regional 3
#4 Virginia Tech – Georgia Amoore
#6 Syracuse – Georgia Woolley, Sophie Burrows, Madeline Potts^
#9 Michigan – Elissa Brett, Chyra Evans
#12/FF Columbia - Kitty Henderson, Fliss Henderson

I think Kayo will have some games randomly mixed in with the men but otherwise its VPNs or boxscores. :(

Anstey retired from basketball if anyone was unaware.
Poa apparently is ok now and back at training soon.

If you have a Fetch or Foxtel account it grants access to ESPN's additional channels and overflow service which will have every game live.

Opening night First Four stage example:

Thursday, 21 March

NCAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
7:00 AM NCAA Women's Basketball Championship (First Four) ESPNU
9:00 AM NCAA Women's Basketball Championship (First Four) ESPNU

(Not airing live on either ESPN or ESPN2.)

Interesting stuff PW! Hadn't known that. Always figured Fetch was just for people without a smart tv and wanted budget foxtel. Will have to keep an eye out for deals.

The college portal "season" is also under way. We've already had Holly Griffith (ex Southside dp) and Alana Goodchild (ex Bendigo dp) leave their college already. Chaos to keep track of.

Men's NCAAT has already started, Women is tomorrow, let's go!

@Footloose There's too many possible reasons to know exactly unless its specifically reported. College Portal is like free agency, players can move anywhere they want to if they get an offer. Most of the time I think it comes down to trying to get better game time or on better teams. There could be fit issues too.

Eg, Summah Hanson (Qld/CoE), rookie of the year in her conference, she and most of her team are in portal, something might be going on there. Summah Evans (Qld) too had all-conference honours, maybe she's trying to get to a better team in last year of eligibility?

Kitley announced what everyone was already assuming - that her injury was an ACL - so that kills VT's chances of going deep unfortunately. It didn't stop VT destroying Marshall, with Amoore logging only 20 minutes (and a pretty meh game statistically, but it didn't remotely matter)

(6) Nebraska vs (11) Texas A&M hopefully more interesting from the aussie fan POV, tipping off in just over an hour

I'm kinda shocked that Poa is back in action already after that nasty head injury a couple of weeks ago. I hadn't even been checking LSU scores but they're still dancing, with Poa logging 19 & 14 minutes in the 2 games.

Amoore & the Hokies tip off in a few minutes. Will take a special effort for them to get through.

No pressure...

She will be a good get for any wnbl team.
Staying in the wnba and cementing a long term opals spot will be difficult.
Think she will be like heal, in and out of opals teams and ending up in europe.

Amoore has left VT. No details on if she's going to Kentucky with the coach for her last year, or announcing going pro/WNBA draft. I think the deadline is April 5th.

Tess Heal is in the portal, seems like she's in high demand to land at a power conference team. Summah Hanson stayed in California, went to UC Irvine who got the tournament bid in Big West this year (same conference Atwell played at Hawaii).

It's been a tournament of close games but few upsets so far, still have 5 teams with Aussies on them of the remaining 16 teams. Bandwagoning the Beavers this tournie but Notre Dame and Hidalgo will be tough to beat. Don't think anyone is stopping SC overall, the LSU v Iowa matchup feels inevitable too.

As long as that's the reason and not that she's heading to Kentucky because she thinks she owes Coach Brooks something more that she's already given him. It's been a very mutually beneficial partnership.

Unexpected surprise that with Poa and LSU knocked out, last Aussie standing in the Final Four...SA's Lizzy Williamson at NC State. Used her last year of eligibility to be their back-up centre who doesn't really play, so not likely to see her play, but props to her and the roster for making it so far. Experience of a lifetime.

Luuuc - yes you are correct re time slots. I am looking forward to CC and Boston's P&R actions in the future. No doubt allow time for adjustments and no doubt smarter players - however CC's agility and speed will do extremely well in the WNBA. Already tickets are selling well and I read that the Aces had to find a bigger arena for their game against the Fever. Looking at teh geography - is the Fever CC's "local" team too ?

Indiana, Minnesota, and Chicago all a similar distance I think. Pretty sure she grew up a Minnesota Lynx fan.

As luck(?) would have it her boyfriend (who I think graduated from Iowa last year) is employed by Indiana Pacers (maybe as a video guy?), who just happen to share ownership with the Fever!
