Basketball Australia Game Development Levy

With Basketball Australia already receiving around $6,000,000 a year for its high performance programs from the Federal Government is it right is grabbing that much again from grassroots participants to top up its coffers? Seems a bit rich when financial pressures are already seeing participation rates drop in some areas.

It will be interested to see if there is some transparency around how these funds are being used. Given they no longer own the premier men's basketball league in the country, the women’s version is on life support. I am not sure why we should trust them to wisely invest the hard earned funds from the basketball community.

$6million is peanuts for best practice high performance. Unfortunately, funding for sport in Australia does take it from grassroots unless your sport has a multi-billion dollar TV deal.

$6,000,000 represents an almost 15% increase in income from the most recent financials released by BA. Not bad work if you can get it. Did nothing new, other than charging a fee to everyone playing basketball.

Will the amount spent by BA on their (bloated) administration and executive increase? Or will it genuinely go back to where it's needed most?

I don’t mind any levy as long as it goes to the right(!) areas of the game in order to build the game.

Yeah, it does seem a bit much to ask grassroots players for more cash when there's already government funding in play.

Just hope the funds do not go into the pockets of the Executive and staff.

Ensure grass roots basketball gets something and not the state bodies to feed their pockets as well.

I think the Game Development Levy is a great initiative. It's essential for investing in the future of basketball in Australia. I'd love to see the funds used for more grassroots programs and talent development.
