Funny Maher returns to form as Sixers roll Crocs
The Adelaide 36ERS returned to the winners list tonight, running out seven point winners over the Townsville Crocodiles despite throwing away a hefty half-time advantage. Sixers captain Brett Maher drew a sigh of relief from the home-town audience in a solid return to form, as Adelaide finished on top, 102-95. The win continues the Sixers' home streak, extending it to nine games straight, and raises the team to second position on the Philips Championship ladder.
Maher top scored for the winning team with 23 points, and added a game-high 7 assists and 4 steals, the same day as he finished runner-up for the NBL's October Player of the Month award.
Townsville looked set to crash the Sixers party at the opening, bursting to a 6-13 lead during which Adelaide looked less than impressive, but the Sixers returned fire with a 16-5 run that gave them a four point lead at the first break. Dusty Rychart, who finished with a 16 point, 14 rebound double-double had a couple of scores in the first quarter and rarely looked to force a shot.
The second term saw Adelaide break open the game, with Maher, Willie Farley (19 points, 5 assists), Oscar Forman (14 points, 6 rebounds) and Jacob Holmes (16 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists) nailing outside shots as they amassed a 31-15 advantage for the quarter, to close the first half with a substantial 20 point lead. Crocs imports Larry Abney (9 points, 11 rebounds) and Casey Calvary (20 points, 9 rebounds) were the only Townsville players to hit more than two shots in the twelve minutes.
The tables turned in Adelaide's bane, the third period. The Crocodiles barely looked concerned by the deficit and took little time to play out an amazing 3-21 run that brought them back into the game. Ex-Sixer John Rillie was superb, making three treys in 13 personal points as Townsville went 6-of-7 from long range and entered the final break just five points in arrears. SA-bred Brad Newley was the apprentice, adding 9 points in the third, and would finish with a wholesome statline of 18 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals.
From there though, Adelaide seemed just too experienced in close finishes (and especially so at the Distinctive Homes Dome) to do anything but hold off the Crocs. Rillie kept up his barrage to finish with a game-high 32 points, including 25 in the second half, but Adelaide had contributions from much of the team and with the visitors in foul trouble in the final minute, the result was ensured.
The Sixers move to 12-4 on the ladder behind only the Sydney Kings, and play the Pirates interstate on Sunday. Townsville, now 5-10, face another two tough games this round, playing the Kings in Sydney and then the Hawks also on the road.
Adelaide 36ers 102 (Maher 23, Farley 19, Rychart, Holmes 16, Forman 14)
Townsville Crocodiles 95 (Rillie 32, Calvary 20, Newley 18, Rose 11)
