World Cup - Second Round: 1-16

A thread for broader conversation about the groups and predictions. Might as well keep day-by-day threads for non-Boomers games otherwise.

Group I:
Serbia
Dominican Republic
Italy
Puerto Rico

Group J:
USA
Lithuania
Montenegro
Greece

Group K:
Slovenia
Germany
Australia
Georgia

Group L:
Canada
Spain
Brazil
Latvia

Group K is perhaps most interesting with Australia hopefully capable of beating each opponent. The other three groups each have two stronger teams who'd be confident.

Georgia only down by 2 at half time vs Germany.
Montenegro lead USA at half time!! USA can't hit the side of a barn.

Montenegro game is worth a look. USA has been trying to defend Vooch with Hart which is an interesting plan.

Great to see Latvia beat Spain without Porzingis (and for Spain to not get any BS calls go their way at the end). They had a decent contingent of fans in the crowd. Unfortunately whenever they would chant 'Lat-vi-a' all I could hear was 'Hun-gry-Jacks'. It must have damaged my brain over the years.

Would be great if Brazil could beat Canada tonight, would set up a brilliant last day in Group L where the two winners advance. Same will be the case if Puerto Rico beat Dominican Republic in Group I.

What a win for Brazil, this new head coach has been great for them after a year and a bit at the helm.

Puerto Rico also knocking off DR. Crazy day.

Yep, winner of Canada v Spain and winner of Brazil v Latvia go through. That's 4 knockout games on Sunday, should be fun.

Yago was huge for Brazil, a couple of massive baskets in the final 90 seconds in what was like an old-school Tournament of the Americas grind!

8 games last night, 5 Upsets . The two great Euro powerhouses of the last decade both in real danger of missing Quarter-finals. France knocked out Rd 1. Spain will now play Canada with both teams vying to remain, after they both got upset last night. Tournament sport is a different beast. You don't get many chances. Aussies not alone in that respect

Sth Sudan up 13 on Angola in the 2nd term. If they win that, and NZ beat Egypt, that puts Sth Sudan into the Olympics.

Sth Sudan end up winning by 23, they're in the Olympics regardless of the other result. Amazing effort!

Ivory Coast are ahead of France at half-time, surely the French can't let that one slip? NZ with Ili not playing the second half are keeping Egypt at arm's length but not home yet. Le'afa and Delany threatening 30-pieces.

The more losses inflicted on the US the better.

For the greater good it matters because eventually they'll have to start respecting the World Cup and hopefully one day it gets to a point where they're forced to play their top team.

This was a great game of basketball.Lithuania dodged a bit of a bullet but always so satisfying when the US team gets beaten by a bunch of guys that the average hoops fan has never heard of (apart from Valančiūnas). Be interesting to compare the respective collective payrolls of the 2 teams.

Love all the upsets, and some of those quarterfinal matchups will be crackers.

Don't love how some of the refs struggle to keep control or to enforce the rules around grappling, flopping, mouthing off, headchecks, ... when the pressure is on. The games earlier in the WC seemed better reffed. For the longevity of my TV screen, I hope we get the best refereeing for the quarters which doesn’t reward this nonsense.

They need 2 challenges per team each game - if you lose a challenge you lose one, if you win the challenge you keep it.

I don't care if this slows down what are pretty quick under 2 hour games. The standard of decisions needs to be much better, this will help get better decisions.

What it won’t fix is the ridiculous inconsistency of calling physicality in games.

I always thought NBL was a happy medium between NBA’s ridiculous offensive bias in rules and Europes unnecessary physicality. Use that as a guide.
