Mangok Mathiang to join South Sudan National Team?

We've heard that Mathiang might be joining the South Sudan national team.
He played for the Boomers in FIBA World Cup qualifiers in 2019.
I was told that if you play even one game for your national team, you can't play for another country.

If Mathiang can switch national teams, Irving could still play for Australia, Simmons could play for the US, and Embiid could play for France, the US, and Cameroon.

Not gonna lie, kinda like the Sudanese team, it's not like they are gonna medal any time soon but laying some decent foundations...

It’s kinda like this Sudanese team is a parasite that’s grown from within Aus/NBL

How would the Sudanese team compete with NZ both teams at full strength ? Nz missing Adams…

The country who they initially played for must be willing to release the player

Eric Gordon who previously played for the USA at the 2010 WC has just switched to the Bahamas.

"USA Basketball granted Gordon's release and FIBA approved his change of country representation due to Article 22 of its Internal Regulations.

"Article 22 prohibits a player from changing national team allegiance once he has participated in a major FIBA competition. Gordon previously competed for the USA in the 2010 FIBA World Cup. The article can be amended at FIBAs discretion if the player is joining a developing national team program and the move is deemed "in the best interest of basketball."

"Gordon will immediately join the team for the FIBA Americas Olympics Pre Qualifiers in Argentina."

I am absolutely not against Mathiang playing for the South Sudan national team, I am a fan of his and I am a fan and supporter of the South Sudan national team.
What I'm talking about is FIBAs discretion.
For example, what if some players are approved and others are denied? Depending on how you look at it, this could be reverse discrimination.

FIBA, FIFA, the Olympic Games bodies, ... have all shown a long history of back-scratching, inconsistency and greed.

With budgets and power greater than many governments, and without the accountability, why would we expect ethics or impartiality?

South Sudan didn't exist when some of these guys played for Australia initially. As such FIBA has given any person willing to switch dispensation. BA has been very supportive of any one wanting to play for their country of birth.

South Sudanese have also been allowed to play in the NBL as Australians despite not being Australian or New Zealander.

This is simply not true. You need to be a citizen in order to play as a local unless you come under the Asian player rule. Any Sudanese athlete that plays NBL is a citizen of Australia unless they were signed as an import under a foreign passport which to my knowledge hasn't happened before.

Originally players slipped through the system and were allowed to play in leagues under the nbl if they were pr's.

It was found that this wasn’t actually a rule but an oversight by the state bodies. You had a youth league winning side with several pr youth players and not citizens.

The rule was then amended to allow pr’s to play as locals, which is why you’ll see nbl1 pr’s play as locals yet would be classed as imports at nbl level, until they get their citizenship.

Some of this is getting out of hand.

I understand if you are helping an emerging team that's never going to medal but no way Embiid should be able to play for France or USA - you're from Cameroon mate, sorry your national team isn't great but that's life.

Also there needs to be a cooling off period at least. Could someone potentially end up playing for three national teams at major tournaments at this rate?

There's also the opposite being the case in Rugby where big national teams pillage smaller nations, particularly Pacific Islander nations and therefore their growth is severely stunted.

This is a good comparison and despite my detest of FIBA and believing they view Africa as a future cash cow at least they are trying to give the "have nots" a leg up whereas in rugby union the haves constantly draining talent from the weaker nations is grotesque.

(One month until the rugby World Cup starts, immediately after FIBA. Can't wait!)
