Gippsland United Rejected for Classic Consideration

As a person with a keen interest in Gippsland Basketball - Basketball Victoria has rejected Gippsland United submission to be eligible for consideration to enter National Classic.

Due to GU being a 'special purpose' association and not an 'affiliated' association the submission was rejected. A special purpose association cannot run a domestic competition, so the teams are made from players across a number of Gippsland Associations e.g. Traralgon, Sale, Moe etc

GU operate similarly to the Melbourne Tigers, Camberwell Dragons, Keysborough Cougars who in the past did not have domestic competitions (and may still not) but were still eligible for entry to Classic.

GU and Latrobe Energy (former name) have submitted to BV and the Classic Sub-committee for many years and continue to be unfairly treated.

Teams may not qualify but they should be eligible where they do! GU also have a position that if a local association qualifies for Classic by winning Country Champs, the players are to prioritise the local association.

Whilst I can not comment on the original posters situation - What I understand (as a lay person on the outside) - a similar situation may have previously happened in at least one other state. It depends on your states by-laws / constitution etc. From memory in the other state some smaller regional associations created a larger combined team just for a tournament and were successful. This was not a regular association but the smaller associations they came from were the official bodies within that state's structure. On the flip side another group of smaller associations within that state adjusted their constitutions / by-laws etc and become a regional association body - not just the local towns in area having their own associations. Bit like a corporate merger. It's an interesting discussion.
