Two factors to take into account when it comes to the possible addition of Karratha:
1) It costs the Buccs and Giants ballpark estimate between 250k - 300k each season taking into account travel costs, accommodation etc. Both clubs have been around long enough that this figure would be value for money given the amount of travel they do each season, with the Buccs even investing in their own team bus a few years ago to increase the player comfort levels. Saving a major partnership with Qantas or Virgin, one would then make the assumption that their costs each season would be around 350-400k. That's a heck of an investment from local businesses but that being said, alot of the states major mines are based in the Pilbara so it's not totally unachievable.
2) This however is the big case and is a two headed monster. The first ugly head is the simple fact that the financially weaker clubs in the league already struggle to make the Gero and Kal trips each season, with the Slammers, Magic, Suns and Eagles all being known to do 'flying' road trips to the two regional games, playing and then literally driving back to Perth straight after the game to save on accommodation costs. Asking those same clubs to now factor in return flights to Karratha for 30 odd people at around 600 per person if you're lucky, and there is 20k extra per season alot of those teams would rather spend on playing talent rather than travelling to the north west. The other even uglier head of this argument is that with the reduced amount of games, teams now already don't play each other twice and so some teams would not travel to Karratha meaning they are better off both financially and fatigue wise. The only counter to this would be BWA pushing for Albany to finally get the Raiders back up and sustainable, then having a north and south conference whereby you play everyone in your conference twice (H&A), and you play every team in the opposite conference once alternating each year as to whether it's home or away. For arguments sake it would look something like:
North: Karratha, Gero, Joondalup, Warwick, Perry Lakes, East Perth, Perth, Kalamunda
South: Willetton, Lakeside, Cockburn, Rockingham, Mandurah, South West, Goldfields, Albany
Could it work? Sure. Is it financially viable and sustainable? Probably not, especially in the South.
Back to the actual season itself and how many more losses before Knowles is replaced by Beveridge at Rockingham? Apparently they still have players still to come in but how far away are they? If you are 0-6; 1-7 by the time they get here, is it even worth it? They've attempted to purchase a championship with that lineup only having two locals and it's still blowing up in their face. When will teams learn develop your own kids and compliment them with Imports filling the gaps. People love to mock TT on here but he has done the complete opposite to your Rockingham and Joondalup's of just buying talent and getting shallow wins. He's developed a heap of local kids, then recruited well with Jewel and Jessie in leadership roles and is now reaping the benefits. Imagine if all clubs took that approach! An interesting couple of weeks coming up could very well see some hirings and firings I think
