Does Oscar Remember where the Paint is....?

I dont want to hate, and yeah he can shoot the rock but damn.... thats ALL he's doing right now. Some will argue he doesnt have to board much etc... but damn. He doesnt even show the slight intrest in getting to the rim or even in the lane.

He is averaging just over 5 rebounds a game so he must be doing something right!

Every NBL side should have 204 cm shooting guard! Let him do his thing.

Well he doesn't need to get in the lane. Not his role.

Until teams start closing out hard on him forcing him to put in on the floor (which did occur once against Wollongong resulting in Oscar getting to the line) he should just keep shooting the rock.

Oscar is just a shooting guard stuck in a power forwards body, hence the confusion.

Oscar HAS showed an improved inside presence over the last season or two.
What Oscar is, is a very good defensive rebounder and the best 3 point shooter in the country (see 2004/05 where he was the only forward in the top 10 in 3 point %; in fact No. 1 with 48 odd % and about 6% better than Brad Davidson at No. 2!)
Oscar is very aware about the areas of the game where he needs to improve and works diligently in theses areas at practice every day.
So in summation, his team is in 1st spot and he is close to the best 6th man in the country, so 'D' its time to get over yourself.

thats it if he keeps shooting around 50% in 3's he should keep doin it, anyway he'd get out-muscled in the lane against bradke's an other like him

well i guess it depends on the role you are in and the nature of your team. Dusty, jake, Coops and Reesy all generally play a style thats closer to the rim. Some of the sixers are not confident/reliable from range. Whilst he can hit the outside shot at a decent percentage and get free for shots that he is making consistently I am not complaining. He is hitting shots at a better percentage than some of the guys are from the paint! Against Hawks he got free to launch 10 3pt shots- decent effort for someone who is now marked from outside. Meanwhile his turnovers are low and he still shares the ball around although its good to see him now demanding the ball on occasions. It would be great to see more drive and dish and some midrange Js off the dribble which he is also capable of hitting but in the meantime he sets the screens, gets free on the perimeter, and is often the runner in transition unless they score and also expected to get back quickly when we turn it over. So after a slow start i think he has been consistent this season and against the hawks his game might have been influenced by what was happening on court overall.

Remninds me of a line from a Spike Lee movie Mo Better Blues

Spike:" That Larry Bird, all he can do is shoot three pointers"

Denzel:" Mother F*cker, that is all he needs to do"

Have said it before but Oscar has the potential to be the best player in the NBL. Leagues best shooter in a 6"9 body. Hard to stop that.

When he is open i have the same confidence as i do in Brett making the shot.

Isaac dont wanna be showing favourtism now do he? i dont care how good you shoot at 6-10 you should get to the basket a bit more!for people to remember the 2 drives and dunks, shows that he doesn't get to the cup enough for a big guy! Bill laimbeer was a 3 pt shooter but he did mix it up on the boards and 5 rbs is not enough for some one his size!

Oscar is a Gun off the bench!

why would you want him to bang in the boards when he can drag the opposite PF/SF/SG away from the rim and get him out to his territory.

5-10 for last match!>!?

No, I haven't posted on this thread until now. I think 5 RPG coming off the bench and ten straight games in double figures is what they want from him. Would there be any other player in the NBL who's doing that off the bench this year? Against the Hawks, he had 17 points at 50% and wasn't even the first sub in and that level of output hasn't been rare this year.

We'd all like to see him take it inside more often but in this team he does what the coaches want him to do first and foremost, and you'd figure that to be get free and make the shot. Maybe in the future he will have more of the role he has at the ABA level, taking the go-to shots and getting the boards inside. He can definitely do both of those things. What are opponents going to do in a clutch play if they don't know whether the ball is going to Maher, Farley, Rychart or Forman? That's tough to defend.

Almost 11 PPG (up on last year, despite the addition of Nash to the side), 5 RPG (1 RPG off last year), by far the best 3P% in the team, very low turnovers and the occasional block. He's doing exactly what he needs to do in that team, IMO.

He's a gradual developer, but he's always improving.

Maher, Farley, Rychart or FORMAN??? um you were doing fine with the 1st 3 names!!!!! Oscar has a NBA body and is soft as a poo sandwich!

I'm not sure of the relevance of that. I'm talking about the last shot of a quarter or even a game.

You need a three in the corner to win the game, and their best defenders are tying up Maher, Farley and Rychart. Who are you going to give it to next? Cooper, who hesitates when he's more than x feet from the basket? Nash or Hill (23% from outside), Holmes (33%), etc.

The coaches nearly always sub Oscar in for the last play of a quarter (if he's not already on) to give them another option for the shot. That's all I was suggesting. It's fact, so bias is irrelevant.

(I'm worried that you'd know how soft a 'poo sandwich' would be.)

I'd have to agree with Isaac on this one. Game on the line, could go to Maher, Farley, Rychart or Forman. When the Sixers are next in the situation where they need a basket in the dying seconds I wouldn't be surprised if the ball landed in Oscar's hands to take the shot

Take a look at the game a couple of weeks ago (against who I can't recall) but we were in need of a big bucket and who came up with the shot - Oscar hit a big 3. So I agree with Isaac game on the line Maher, Farley, Dusty or Forman.

I think how far Oscar can get will depend on how much he can develop creating his own shot off the dribble.

You can make a living in the NBL being a catch-and-shoot type guy (Matt Campbell being a prime example, and Jason Smith another), but Oscar would be brutal if he became a bit more of a slasher and forced teams to try and cover both his drive and his shot.

Keep Oscar 6th man but give him MORE court time.Yes he is more of a shooting forward but boards will come with court time.
IMO Holmes is holding oscar back,Jacob can rebound well but please give the rock to oscar!

Its better to have 5 specialists in 5 different fields on the court than 5 Jacks of all trade and master of none. Oscar does what Oscar does best. His contribution has been incredibly valuable. Its the coach's decision what role he thinks is most beneficial to the team. If anyone thinks they can do a better job than Smyth, then put your suggestions to him.

There are some very blind people out there right now. Oscar Forman can play and causes all kinds of defensive problems for any team!
He has shot the heck out of it all season, no one hit wonder syndrome, and has had more dunks already this season, as what he has had combined in all his previous seasons!

To say he doesnt take it to the paint is just a bit of nonsense..... Maybe he has remebered that 3's are worth more than 2's. He comes in at the 6 minute mark of every game and by quarter time he usually is one of our top 2 scorers, so leave his game alone. His only floor is he hasnt really 'gpne on with it' and put a huge score together this season. He has consistantly had 13 point halfs, and only his a couple of free throws in the second half. As his minutes increase, which they will, especially next season when he will start instead of Holmes, why? Because he is a more effective threat for opposition teams.

I'm actually getting fed up with Jacob Holmes style of play. Ask Chuck Daly, a foot on/inside the 3point line is THE worst shot in basketball, yet it's his most attempted shot type, and its usually taken on mini breaks without rebounders in position. He is near unstoppable inside the key, but continually pulls up and misses shots outside the paint. I also dont rate his passing very highly. He is a liabilty outside the key in my opinion.

I think if you watch the Sixers games most opposing teams are very conscious of Oscar as being the Sixers number one threat from deep. He is playing excellent ball at the moment and as Isaac pointed out, his consistency has been a huge bonus.

He may never develop into a back to the basket scorer, but as is Adelaide has enough scoring out of the post and there has to be someone to kick the ball to when the double-team comes. At the moment there is no one better in the league at nailing those shots than Oscar. His passing has also shown a large improvement this season.

As far as the rebounding Oscar is solid and I don't think that 5 rebounds per game in just under 25 minutes is too bad. Especially when offensively his job is to spot up.

I don't think that Oscar should start ahead of Holmes though, as the punch that Forman gives Adelaide off the bench is a key part of its dynamic.

Any news on Nash's back injury? I remember a couple of years back when Adelaide was something like 13-18, but was 5-2 in the games that Nash missed with injury. Its interesting that our three losses have come in games where he has dressed this season.

Maybe that streak will end tonight?

Just something I noticed while watching the Sixers on Fox tonight. Oscar was out on the break, with Chris Anstey in front of him under the ring and David Cooper running the lane on the other side. With Anstey standing a bit flat footed undecided what to do, Oscar decided to try and pass around the back of him to Cooper. Anstey managed to steal the ball and pass it back to a teammate. Great work from Anstey, unfortunately a turnover from Oscar. Fair enough, it happens in basketball. But the thing I wondered was with Anstey kind of off balance while deciding which way to go and a pass to Cooper a little tricky to pull off, with his great athleticism why didn't Oscar try and go for the throwdown. I'm sure he would have made it! Did anyone else see this?
