Kyrgios - part owner of SEM

https://www.news.com.au/sport/basketball/nick-kyrgios-buys-share-in-nbl-team-south-east-melbourne/news-story/9ddc760e8092950bd1d8b013ee93d3c7

i see it as a good thing

brings in sponsors and get their (SEM) name and brand out there on a global market

i know some SEM supporters aren't happy due to the public image that nick has but its good to see more globally recognised people buying into the NBL.

Are these nba players and Kyrgios providing capital investment or just effectively ambassadors?

Surely can't be bad, spread the load in bad financial seasons. Share the profits on good.

What profits

I'd be shocked if Kyrgios put any money in himself.

LOL @ profits.

Why would you be shocked? He'd have to put some money in to be called a part owner. How much that is would be anyones guess. With all these part-owners at the Phoenix, who makes the big decisions?

I'd believe that some clubs should be turning profits by now. Sydney for certain. Bogut and Longley are not throwing their money in to lose it.

Not certain why people don't think Kyrgios is not throwing money in, he’s certainly made some over his career and still can earn heaps more.

I don't think Sydney turns a profit.

And you can have a share in ownership without paying for it - I don’t think Bogut did invest financially?

Correct on both counts.

Oh, well there you go. Learn something new everyday! "Part-Ownership" is as broad of a definition as they come as far as I'm concerned. In the case of Kyrios, if he hasn't paid for anything, then I'd like to know what exactly is in it for Phoenix? I can see how guys like Longley and Bogut can add value to the Kings, but no so much Kyrios with Phoenix.

Kyrios is high profile & loves basketball, it makes sense. Maybe he's just getting his feet wet in case the Cannons licence gets up & he’ll be a major player in that franchise?

Hmmm. So a bit like when Nic Naitanui got involved in the Wildcats marketing campaign when they were pushing for 10000 members years ago? Only difference being was that he wasn't called an "owner"

I actually don't mind Kyrios. He's high profile, and yes he loves basketball. But he's also super divisive, so I'm not sure about this move by the Pheonix. It makes sense but I just don't think it's brilliant by any means.

I think it does more good than harm.

NBL is still pretty low profile and low general credibility among average aussies, so I think it's a boost.
On the flipside, yes Kyrgios is a tosser. But I don't think that matters too much in a tangible sense. Is it going to put off any existing fans in terms of attendances, purchases or viewership? Fairly minimal negative impact IMO. If there's a neutral noob out there who hates him with sufficient intensity then maybe it creates a new United fan lol
