Scott Roth next Boomers coach?

Love the way this guy coaches. Disciplined, defensive, inspired.

With Brian Goorj in Asia, mind elsewhere and getting on in age, can Rothy be our next coach??

I think there's a difference between a coach of stars and the personality that comes with it vs coaching a team that’s not star studded and personality driven.

The Boomers are the former so you really need a coach that can handle the players that will actually be in WC and Olympic teams.

Is Roth going to be capable of that? There’s no point having a coach that tries to change the players, it’s about harnessing the players.

Well he can't beat New Zealand, so he's probably out of the running ;-)

Roth is a good fit in that the Boomers are a culture-based team, built through the Lemanis years with the core playing group. Roth has done a very similar thing in Tasmania, so you know he gets it.

I'm not aware of any FIBA experience though, so that is one X next to his name. Fair to say there isn't really a clear standout to take over the role.

I have to agree that juggling egos is a different job to getting the most out of role players. I am not a one-eyed Goorjian fanatic but I think his want to 'get out of the way' and let the leadership group run the show is why the Boomers had success last year. And while I am sure you're never going to need to push effort out of Patty, Joe, Jock, Baynesy and co, theyre certainly not going to smile and nod if sent to the bench for missing a scout. And then there's the Ben Simmons situation. The gut reaction to my bringing that up is going to be "ha! He'll never show." But hold on just a second. What if he did? For all his faults, Ben instantly elevates this team and mitigates our lack of size inside. And we also know his ego will need to be massaged to fill a role. Scott Roth isnt going to do that. And Ben isnt the only guy who sits in this category. A lot of the young NBA guys are more Americanized than past Boomers. Theyre need to feel like stars will need to be carefully considered.

The Boomers job isn't about juggling egos. They have an incredibly strong culture that the senior players drive, which was probably the greatest legacy of the Lemanis era.

Possibly in a few years if that culture is not passed on well to the next generation that could be the case (hopefully not), but it certainly isn't now.

The full strength Boomers team is likely to have nine NBA players out of the twelve, with maybe one out of Europe, one out of Japan, and one NBL.
Boomer training camps are now in the US to minimise player travel.
Australia now has I think six coaches in the NBA system
who are all well familiar with the Australian players who are not NBA.
I would expect the next Boomers coach to be one of those six,
it might even be one who has been involved before, similar to Goorg.

Has previously had roles with the Dominican Republic and Chinese national teams. Given the importance of Boomers culture, I suspect he'd have to be involved in the program first before being given such a role.

You'd have to like some combination involving Matty Neilsen and/or Caporn and Gleeson. Whoever is next in line should be assistant in the cup or failing that, should take the reigns before that transition. But I agree, Boomers culture isnt something you mess around with.

I think Roth has a lot in common with early career Goorj, who maybe wasnt the best fit for the Boomers team in his first stint. I think he learned from that and as mentioned above, did a good job of not trying to impose himself on the squad in Tokyo last year leading to their success.

National teams will go through different stages as well though. The guys we've had that have instilled that culture the whole way will be gone soon, so may necessitate a stronger handed coach.
